They are getting big!!! Only one has Y'd...and has tiny buds, so it should bloom in the next while...these were planted 4-20-04 and I over-wintered them in my little GH. I know you are going to ask...so let me see...the one that Y'd is...gypsy queen x Jean Pasko....
Seedlings from seeds from PoppySue...
They look really nice & healthy. Hope you get some beautiful blooms!
Thank you Shirley...I hope so too! Actually they look alot healthier than my named brugs!! Strange, isn't it or is it???
It looks wonderful! Looks like it over-wintered very well... that HAS to be a plus! I cant wait to see what the blooms look like!
Thank you Shelly...
The other sdlings are:
Ecuador Pink x sdlg (ursulinexcubaz)
Milk n Honey x Sunset (maya)
They have not Y'd yet though...
picturelady, I have 3 Gypsy QueenXJean Pasco, 2 Y'd last fall but didn't bloom. All 3 are rather short plants (compared to some other seedlings) at 3.5 to 5 feet tall. How does yours measure? I'm wondering if the height is due to the cross, or if it's environmental.
eileen...mine measures 40 inches to the Y...and 43" total...so 3'7"
I can actually see little buds, so I am pretty sure they will bloom this year. As a matter of fact, I think I will begin fertilizing them just to make sure they do!!
Can't wait to see what blooms, Margie!!! Good luck!!
Congratulations!.....they look happy and healthy.
Very pretty crosses, and I hope they bring you some awesome blooms this year!
Jackie
WOW ...... I wish mine looked like that...... What is your secret..... I've been babying along a few cuttings in the basement over the winter and their not even a foot tall..... You've come from seed..? Way to go ....
Thank you Shelly and Jackie and vs....
Don't forget these seeds were started a year ago! Actually they are bigger than some of my cuttings also....these are my first sdlgs, so I don't know but maybe they do outgrow the cuttings?!
Anyone know for sure???
Great Job Margie! They look great. What fert. are you using, they look so green, lush and healthy!
Julie
Nice looking seedlings. I hope you get something special from them.
Margie, They look great!!
Thank you Julie, Terry and Cindy ! Actually it took me awhile to get back to this thread because I was trying to think what I fertilized them with. Actually nothing over the winter...before that I used miracle grow liquid, tea tree oil in water, bayers 2 in1...and also Super Thrive...it seems like everytime I heard of something new to use, I tried it! Oh yes, and also Messenger! And sometimes fish emulsion & seaweed....I think that is all!!!
I just put all my containers into morning sun only as they are already wilting from the afternoon sun. Also counted and I have 5 EP X Sdlg, 2 Milk and Honey x Maya and 2 Gypsy Queen x Jean Pasko...it is only one GQ X JP that has Y'd....and has small buds.
Looking great, Margie. You sure have a green thumb! Which fertilizers do you think your Brugs like best?
Thank you Angela...actually I just used the safer instecticide with the seaweed on my cuttings that were in the GH...and had mites and aphids...they are looking so much greener...
It is hard to tell though, when you keep switching like I do!
Have you tried the alfalfa pellets, Margie? Since I know I will be growing Brugs for a verrrry long time and they are heavy feeders, I am looking for something economical that will keep me in lots of flowers...ok, so I want my cake and eat it, too!
they are doing nice! The ones she sent me are doing very well as well! Don't you just LOVE growing these?! They are so amazing to watch.
Has anyone noticed the leaves do the same things umbrellas do in the wind - invert - and you have go gently re-vert them to normal, lol.
Susan - this Super Nova seems like it might be a tall plant. Am I correct? Want to make sure it's "home" pot is big enough to support it, and also would like to know approximately how tall it will get.
Angela...I did give my brugs the alpha pellet slush once...but my DIL used them on her DL's and feels that she got more cucumber beetles from using it, so I didn't use it again.
Karrie...Yes, I do love growing seeds, although I am running out of room! I have a new batch that will be waiting to be planted this summer...
I used the alfalfa pellets one time. That was all it took for me. It was more mess and bother than it was worth and to be honest, I didn't feel the plants that got the watering (tea) and the leftover sludge did any better than those that got none. The only benefits were that I got the exercise of mixing, carrying the water, and then the sludge, and after it dried, I had to incorporate it into the soil. I did a little test with a couple of same variety brugs, same size. One got the alfalfa tea and the other one didn't. No difference in size after a month and then I gave up on it. Now I grow them with the attitude..if it isn't broke, don't fix it. My brugs grow very well and bloom exceptionally well with only water and fertilizer. I don't think I can improve on that. This picture is just one limb on a plant. I only use Cal Mag or any other good fertilizer and lots of water.
I'm sure that under the right circumstances, the alfalfa pellets would be super. For me, it was a big mess, but I only tried it once. It is sorta like the coil hose thing - I'm apparently the only person on DG and, maybe in the entire world that likes, well, not likes, but LOVES coil hoses, I have seven and I'm going to get more, I cannot imagine what I did before coils. Boils down to using what works best for the individual...hey, that is beautiful, Brugie, really pretty color!!!!!
Shirley - that is very pretty! I just love those dark pinks!
Sherry, I love my coil hose. I use it in the house to water and it sure saves me time.
Thanks. The brug is Mountain Magic and you can tell by the leaves that it is almost time for frost. The color is a little washed out too, but still pretty.
COIL POWER! Who would ever have thunk it?? When I mentioned it last year, not a single person said a good work about them, LOL. Frankly, I don't see how the coil people stay in business, I've never seen or heard of anyone, with exception of you and me, Brugie, that will use them, whew!!!
Your Magic Mountain is a dream, special color, very nice!!!
Sherry...I thought the coil hoses looked great and wanted one...after that post last year I decided against it. What kind do you have? Is it by a certain manufacturer or from a certain store? Do you have problems with it curling into itself? I would really like to know as I need a new hose & would love to get one of those!
Margie, coils might not be for everyone. After I use them, I toss them out on the ground, and they are fine - it's only when others 'bother' my hoses that there is ever a problem and that doesn't happen too often. Coils are easier for me, I have lots of coils and all have three separate hose attachments, one to turn off/on the water, another to disconnect the sprayer, and then the spray nozzel, with 6 or 7 ways to spray. I'm a water hose junkie, but I hate dragging around hoses, so I have any number with coils which makes it much easier. Not many would go to all the trouble. I just HATE water hoses over 25 feet, heavy to drag and they get wound up too, and it would take 150 feet to get around in just one area in my gardens, lots of property, being in the rural south. Until this year, my coils were expensive, but this year, Fred's came out with a 50 footer, that's reasonable and it works nicely. It's green and I would prefer blue, but considering the price, what the hey, I'll get used to green. Hope this helps, I used to be an ice freak, but started drinking bottled water at room temp, ba-bye ice. I'm an odd duck, I love change...
I have absolutely no idea what a coil hose is. Anyone have a pic or link?
Karrie, this is one. http://www.philatron.com/CatalogC/Non-electrical/c-6.html
I don't think I could use a coil outside. Too much navigation and they'd snag on stuff. However I did finally put one in the basement which works out well. I can drag across to water and have snuck it upstairs for initial aquarium fill up. It's gotten lonely since Dec though because I drain off 5gal at a time from the aquarium to water everything with. Feeds plants and does a regular water change on the aquarium.
Here is another site: http://bizrate.lycos.com/buy/products__at_id317900--317901-,at_id317912--222634-,cid--13011300.html
I do not like the dark green coils that you cannot see through. They are entirely too heavy for me. I prefer the light blue and light green coils found on the site above. I always buy the 50 foot length. My local Fred's has them in the see-though green and the one I bought is good, but the washer was installed backwards but when I turned it over, it worked just fine. I'm just a garden hose junkie and the coils are the best I've found. I do not like hose around on the ground, and I have mine fixed where they are in beds, behind plants so they cannot be seen, or tripped over, and the coil is just lighter and easier for me...

I'm not sure I'd have the patience to water with them outside. They don't carry enough water for me for all I have to do. In the house though, they are great. I have the dark green one, but mine is 60 ft. I believe. It cost a little more, but I wanted to be sure to be able to reach everything.
Thanks, Margie and Brugie. Perhaps I will hold off on the pellets for now and stick to organic compost and worm castings. Do you think those will provide enough for these big eaters?
Brugie - that's quite an impressive branch!
Brugie, 'splain, to me, please, ma'am, what you mean by 'carry enough water'. My light weight coils put out as much water as my dark green one, which is way too heavy for me to haul around and maneuver...
Aw Shoot Sherry ! lol
Those skinnie lil thangs ?
I need to get a lot of water out there and use 1" commercial grade water hose only.
Cost a little more in the beginning but it's well worth it.
The coils you use are great for in the house tho.
Maybe I use commercial grade hose, Scoot. I leave my water on all the time and the hose has to be pretty good to be able to do that. I backup my coils with about 30 feet of hose to the spigot. I HOPE I'm going to start a drip system this summer which will, hopefully, eliminate some of the watering. I love watering in the beginning, when the weather is nice, but I quickly get over that!!! How long are your hoses Scoot, and do you leave them out all the time?? That is my problem, I can't stand them strung all over the yard...
I have one 75 ft and three 50 ft plus one I cut into 25 ft sections for those times when you need just a 'skooch' more length to reach something else.
We've all been there .... lol
Some of the hose stays out if it is basically out of sight .
There is forever a section hooked up
in back of the house for the potting bench , kennel , washing horses and just hosing myself off ... LOL
Sherry, my garden hoses are 3/4 inch diameter. The coil hose is only 1/4 inch or near that and I couldn't get it to carry water quick enough to water outside. I want to shoot the plants with a quick gallon or two and move on. It would take me a minute or two to water one plant with the kind of hose I have in the house. I imagine all the coiled hoses are about the same size, but way smaller than a regular garden hose. If it is really hot, I leave my hose laying out because I know I'm going to be using it again that same day, more than once. If it is a nice calm day, I'll put my hose back and pull it out again to water at night. Sometimes they are out because I'm just lazy. We live outside of town and my flowers are in my back yard, not the front.
Thanks Angela. She was a good bloomer. About feeding your brugs....I would say that you need to supplement with a good water soluable fertilizer. I've never tried getting by with just compost and worm casting but I know that compost doesn't have all that much in it, at least the kind you buy. I guess you would have to research how much nutrient there is in them.
Shirley, I wasn't happy with the coiled hose either. Not enough water being delivered. It takes a long time to water with a big hose. It would take forever to water with the coiled. During the summer, I have hoses stretched everywhere and two long ones on a reel that I can add to one that's already stretched if I need more hose.
Okay, okay, now I know why it works for me. Remember I'm a water hose junkie. I have the large hose leading to my coil. Then, I have all the little attachments so I can snap off the coil from the large lead in hose, to fill my buckets, when I need lots of water quickly. The large hose has on/off, so I don't get wet changing from one hose to another and then back to the coil. Every spring I set up the three main hoses, check to see if there are leaks, etc. Then I'm ready to go. Ada, I've never been able to work on of those reels because the ones I've had were so heavy they would wear me out or so flimsy that they tore up...I'm elevating my ankle, before I go back outside for another round...I have a few small, black gnats - are those fungus gnats?? I used the mosquito crumbles on all new plants and hope that will help...
