Hi and thanks Kathleen !
I do use Firefox but I struggle...can I send you an e mail with questions ? ;-) I will check out the link!
Is it better to put the plumeria in the ground than in pots? I have limited space where I think they would do best and would prefer to keep them in pots for now. Ideas anyone?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Brad! But that is far too much work for me! LOL!

Annie, plumerias do very well in pots, and if yours is a just-rooted cutting or small plant, I would keep it in a container for a few years before planting it in the ground. The nice thing about containers is that you can move them around and change the location if it proves unsuitable.

Mesilla Park, NM

Well, I cut and cut and cut, there are about 4 inches left, but that ring was still a little visable. Maybe the cutting was bad to begin with, it was a little darker than the rest, who knows.. the rest look great, no leaves yet,... The pots are awfully light weight and the soil very dry, it makes me nervous thinking that they are dry and want to water.. I know I am not supposed to. Should I mist them later in the afternoon, it is so hot here in Moreno Valley... They do look fine though.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Antoinette, you can water them sparingly if the soil is bone dry and the you have lots of heat and light. Misting is great. You can mist everyday if you want to. You can try to root your four-inch cutting after the end has calloused over. Try using a rooting hormone and no water this time and lots of heat.

Mesilla Park, NM

Here they are, I forgot to take a photo of the seedlings too... there should be 14 cuttings total.. it has been in the high 90's here this week. 93 today, so it is cooling down hahahaha...

Time's a'wastin. ASAP sign up for a class in making leis. You'll soon be in business. Good luck.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Very nice, Antoinette! You should have leaves in no time at all and maybe flowers too!

sob! I've lost my rainbow cutting. Clare was right, it must be a tricky one -- the others are fine. I checked it today and it was like jelly inside. Nope, I haven't watered them -- except for planting time and 1/2 cup of water about three weeks later.

I have another one and will plant it and watch carefully. We're into our May gray weather, though, and it can be pretty wet in the mornings.

So sad -- I was looking forward to that flower. Wish me luck on the next one.

Fret not. Are you old enough to remember Ted Williams? Not even he hit a home run every time.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

flyboyFL,

Well, I certainly know who he is! He was born in San Diego and we have a street named after him. I was more the Drysdale, Kofax, Wills era. When I was playing softball, I got Duke Snyder's autograph and it was quite a highlight of my life!

OK, fretting over.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kathleen, I wasn't able to get AT's rainbows to root either. It is a tough one. Brad is right. Everyone loses some no matter what you do. Some cuttings just decide not to root and rot. I lost a Mardi Gras this winter which broke my heart too. If your heart is set on a rainbow this summer, order a grafted one from Florida Colors: http://www.floridacolors.com/ or a rooted one from Maui Plumeria Gardens: http://www.mauiplumeriagardens.com/

kaperc~ I was being kind -- to myself. My era was Wally Berger and Babe Ruth. Ted Williams was a rookie. The splendid splinter (I vaguely remember.).

Thanks, Clare, that makes me feel better. I'll settle for anything that blooms right now -- the rainbow can wait (I do have another I can try with, though).

BTW, are you going to make it to the CA roundup next month?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kathleen, you may want to try your other rainbow in 100 percent perlite. Some people root their cuttings this way and swear by it. It might be fun to experiment with this. Whatever you use, just give it as much bottom heat as possible: the hotter, the better. About the roundup, probably not. It is usually too far for me to drive, and I have to drive 140 miles a day as it is. My commute is south towards Los Angeles, and the roundups are usually held north of me.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Clare, I will try the 100% perlite -- that's why I held one back, so I could adjust if nec.

Yes, I thought it might be a long trip for you, but some people have rellies or friends in the San Diego area. Still, if you want to take the train to Oceanside, we can shuttle you to and from!

Hi everyone
This is my first pic entry into DG!
Hope you like it as much as i have been enjoying yours !
I made a new thread by mistake! I meant to post here...oopps...

Nice plumies there, Annie! It's no problem to post a new thread:-)

Thanks, Kathleen. That is really nice of you. I'm not sure my back would survive the trip. I've got pretty severe back pain all the time now. I try to not let it interfere with my gardening chores, but it definitely interferes with my travel plans. My schedule of work and school wouldn't let me get away anyway. Have a good time and tells us all about it when you get back.

Take medication. DON'T ALLOW OPERATIONS.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Brad, I was popping Aleve (Naproxin) like crazy until I found out that it can cause heart attacks. Now I just suffer in silence! LOL! No, no, no surgery for me. It's all muscular injuries anyway and couldn't be fixed by surgery. It would probably heal a lot faster if I would stop moving heavy containers all the time! LOL!

Longboat Key, FL

Clare_CA~

1. Stop moving heavy containers.

2. If you have to move one, move it with your legs (lock your arms.)

3. Start the day with two Tylenols -- prophylactic.

4. Send me your Medicare number -- just kidding -- that's not my kind of job.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Okay, Doc, thanks! LOL! I don't know why I always have to move heavy containers, but I do. Today, for example, I pruned some property trees, and the branches came crashing down on my brugmansias in 15-gallon containers so I had to move them out of the way so the branches wouldn't get broken. Someday, I'll have all my containers on rollers. In the meantime, I'll try your Tylenol tip. Thanks, Brad:-)

Clare,

We'd make bookends -- my back keeps me awake at night, but if I'm up and moving it's mostly okay. Today I was moving mulch -- and I remembered to use my legs, flyboy! Driving is not easy, though, because of my wrists; it's inflammatory arthritis, so it's all over the place.

Back to the subject at hand, Clare, do I still not water the rainbow if I plant it in all perlite?

Longboat Key, FL

OK OK OK But you forgot to enclose your Medicare numbers. Be well.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

FlyboyFL,

Don't have one yet!! LOL

Golly, it's tough interacting with kids. I guess I'll have to get used to it.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kathleen,

We are bookends! I have trouble with my wrists too, but it is because I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

I'm sorry about your back. Mine keeps me awake too and driving is the worst.

The water runs right through the Perlite so you can water a teensy bit on occasion. Misting regularly would be beneficial as well. Bottom heat is going to be crucial. Put it on the hottest thing you can find.

Brad, I don't have one yet either! I'm only 40 so I probably won't get one for another 25 years? Be well too:-)

Longboat Key, FL

Good grief. I'll have to watch my language.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Poor man, life is hard at times. :-)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL! You can do no wrong in my eyes, Brad.

Mesilla Park, NM

Okay guys, watered with superthrive today.. just a cup and 1/2 in each one. I was getting worried.. lol. am getting impatient here and don't know why, usually I can wait anything out.

When is that line gonna get shorter....

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Antoinette! It will be all right. I promise. Patience, grasshopper:-) You can come over to my house to smell blooms if you want:-) I don't have many but am willing to share.

Oooh, that's pretty, Clare. Love the pink tinge. sniff, sniff...

Thanks, Kathleen. That is Sarah's Curly Pink. No sniffing allowed;-)

I'm telling you guys, Pooba is greatly missed by me.. I had sent him an e-mail shortly after I received the cuttings from him and asked him if he was going to sell more. The cuttings were fat, huge and healthy.

He was deployed (to an unknown location) at least unknown to us. He e-mailed me from a hotel in Ohio at that time as he was leaving that night.

Anyway, if you guys ever see him selling them again.. Buy them..

I ordered some from one other person on ebay and the cuttings were horrible.. one lady put the color of paint each one was supposed to be and the one she marked with red paint, bloomed white. Anyway, the blooms fell off right after that, and the cuttings were wrinkled and drying up, but they all rooted to my surprise. The other order of cuttings were so bad that they even looked dead when they got here. I am lucky to have these that I do have and probably will not order anymore.

Just wish Pooba was back and pray that he is safe.

Here are all the sticks from a few months ago.

Gourd,
I, too, received a nice fat healthy cutting from Pooba. It was supposed to be a Kauka Wilder. It developed an inflo the first year, and, to my surprise, turned out to be a Nebel's Rainbow, not a Kauka Wilder. I'm not that disappointed since I wanted one anyway. I have been told that Pooba's plants and cutting's are now being sold on eBay by HappyLei808 (not sure of the number, though) I haven't bought any from this seller yet, but I also haven't heard anything bad either. There sure are a lot of sellers popping up, though.

I bought what was supposed to be a rooted cutting from FL, and when I got it, there was no sign of roots in the moss at all. I contacted the seller and was told the plant had "internal" roots. It rotted pretty quickly. Now I only buy cuttings from HawaiiSandy, who is Jim Little's daughter-in-law, Jennifer at Maui Plumeria Gardens, and from people I know from other boards.

Mike

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Antoinette! I bought a bunch from him too and would buy from him again definitely! He had one called Kona Hybrid. Well, it isn't the real cultivar Kona Hybrid, but the bloom I got looks exactly like the picture he posted, and I'm in love with it! I should have bought many more from him. Is he in the military? I do hope he is okay.

One does have to be super careful when ordering on eBay because there are a lot of awful sellers out there. Like Mike, I now only order from people that I know and trust and have purchased from before. I took a chance ordering from Pooba because I didn't know him, but it turned out just great. I've had purchases that didn't turn out good at all. I have purchased from HappyLei before, and her cuttings were a very generous size, and she threw in extras too, and they were very reasonably priced. I think I bought the ones she offered in a Dutch auction so the price was set at the lowest level.

Your cuttings look awesome, Antoinette! Here is the spidery pink, as I now call it, that I got from Pooba. If you bought a Kona hybrid too, then this is what your flower looks like.

Hi there Clare,

Could be he is retired or National Guard. This is the message he sent in April:

Sorry, I will not be selling any plumeria's anytime in the near future. I have been activated and deployed by the Military. Right now I'm emailing you from a hotel in Ohio. I soon will be shipping out to a undisclosed location. Darin

Will check out that other seller on Ebay. Thanks Mikeod

It's so strange when you think about the war or wars, how they affect every aspect of our lives.. even in gardening.
