How much were they at your market? If it was marked taro, I would guess it is Colocasia esculenta-green one. Time will tell!
Shopping for Elephant Ears!
They were 1.29 lb.
I bought 2 of the 7" size, 8 of the small ones, 1 large purple yam, 2 baggies of what looked like the small air potatoes, and 6 mangoes that they had reduced down to .59.
All together I spent $15 and some change.
I shared half of the bounty with my mom.
Here is a pic of the large one with the smaller ones:
Those look REALLY nice and healthy! Your price was very good too. They are bordering $2 a pound around here, no matter which store you buy them in. That is still a far cry below what it costs to buy the bulbs from a 'plant' establishment and you can't beat the size. on them.
I saw the yams (the size of my thigh!) and didn't get them because I was not sure what they would do or look like. I also saw yucca roots (no thanks! LOL), lotus tubers, but they did not have growth tips, two types of the prickly pear-did you know they look different when they are Chinese and African?? I really should avoid places with such neat stuff. LOL
Chele, how big did your ear get from the giant tuber?
That is why I was telling you to get baseball sized ones instead of huge ones. LOL This one grew tons of tiny shoots on top instead of one big one out the top. I don't think that nipping some would have made a difference. It seemed determined to grow from every single nub.
Chele - about Taro - once the tuber is pulled up they often think the need to send out more shoots to survive. In time they will still get huge - and just think of the clump look they are going to give you. If you want really good really fresh stuff find a local farmers market in the Asian area of town, I have found a few things there and they tend to be a little cheaper (and they give me tips on how to plant it and at times they even will bring me a growing plant once you get to know them a little)
That huge one didn't. It has issues. LOL It was in the ground for the whole summer and got about 3 feet tall but the leaves and shoots were very thin. One I planted that was about half that size had leaves 3 feet wide and four feet long and was knock out. I think I was too greedy. ;)
Greed.... can you be to greedy when it comes to EEs. .. .
