I have read the directions
I see the line that would allow for it
The problem? This line is not hot linked on my computer....therefore, nothing I do makes any difference.
This is the ONLY brick wall I have encountered thus far, as I have been able to do all manner of other contributory activities....hmmmm.
Hope there is a fixable solution - thanks!
HOW TO: add a plant to the database?
Hi>
You need to click on the link "Plants" in the menu box on the right. That will take you to the main page for the Plant Database. Just below the heading, there is a line that says "add a new plant to the database". That should take you to a form to fill in.
If this isn't the problem you are having, let me know and I'll try to be of more assistance.
Hope this helps,
Sharon

I do all of that - but when I click on that line that says "add a plant" nothing happens, because I can already see that the line is not in blue, is not a hot link --- so although those words ARE right there, they exist in black text.
Plants Database << in bold face
Add a new plant to the database. << in standard type
There are 504 entries. << in standard type
Search the database: << in bold face
I will go back and check again - it would not be the first time that the obvious had to come up and bit me in my gluteus maximus ........ and this website IS just about the most user friendly one I have ever encountered....
If something new develops, I will post back here immediately. BTW - I am on a Macintosh, and I am using IE to access the site - in the event that matters!
Thank you!
Using a Mac and IE doesn't matter.
Try clicking on one of the headings such as annuals, click the words "list plants". Underneath the page heading, there should also be an add plants link. It doesn't matter that you are in the annual section, cause there's a drop down list for the category.
See if you can get a "hot link" that way.
Let me know, I'm curious. My links are working in both areas.
Sharon
Perhaps there ARE a few other problems here - and maybe somehow they are all connected to the same source .......
Example:
#1 I get completely BLACK pages (other than member names) when I go to first forum posting - but if I click on prepare to print, I can read the posts.
This same black page comes up when I attempt to make entries in my own journal - as in “Access by Category” - the only words visible are blue hot links of ADD/VIEW etc - but unless i click on prepare to print, I have no idea what each set of blue words is linked to.
If, on the other hand, I go via member journals, and look at mine or “yours” - a normal list is there, but I cannot work w/ it.
# 2 The RID number box on the right side of MY journal menu doesn’t “go” anywhere because the only active button in the area is the search journal button. I can type in the RID - but then what? No search button for it. I can type in the name of the plant, there is a search button, and it does go to it.
I have been able to “work around” these problems, but as time goes on, it can become a good deal more cumbersome to work within my journal .
#3 On this page The Garden Journal: Member List - there is another box that has no search button - and it says “Search DG” - but there is nothing to activate that AFTER you type in whatever it is that you are wanting to find.
I had better stop with this - for what was going to be a short request for help is getting mighty darn long!
Thanks (BTW - your new message just came in - but let me send this and then deal with that )
As per your message - I followed the suggested pathway and came to this:
Plants Database: Annuals - bold face
Add a new plant to the database.- standard
There are 82 entries in the Annuals category -standard
Same situation here - no hot linking possible on the Add feature! :-(
I just found it - egads - duh - preferences file makes all the difference - thanks for your help - gasp croak
Oh heck - now I have a bunch more boxes but still no "search buttons" to activate - what the heck - and pages are all still black - etc - I am not making the progress I prematurely hoped for - but maybe the answer lies somewhere in those preference settings - still looking
Hello. Regarding question #2 in your message from Jun 24, 2:49 PM: there is no button for the RID jumps and little search boxes. After you type in your search parameters, just press Enter to activate the search.
A box would have taken too much real estate on the screen, so I got rid of it since it wasn't necessary. Try hitting enter and see if that works.
Regarding the rest of your problems... I'm not really sure. The links are most certainly there and active for the browsers I am using here (including several Linux based browsers, plus Netscape and IE for Windows).
There are some issues on DG regarding the Macintosh version of Internet Explorer. Trish (my wife) uses an iMac, and she has come across many many bugs with the page rendering of DG with her IE. I've spent hours trying to figure out what bug is in IE that is causing these problems, but I was never able to find it.
The solution: Use Netscape on the iMac, because there are NO bugs with that browser's ability to access DG.
I hope I haven't overloaded you with information, or disappointed you with my answer. Microsoft makes a shoddy product and I can work around it only so much. :-(
Dave
Whew - here we are on Netscape and what a difference the browser makes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you sooooo much!!!!!! My iMac thanks you, too!!! HOWEVER - although all the black pages are gone, and I can see clearly now - I still cannot add a plant to the database - arrghhhhh ....... just as w/ IE, there is NO hotlink aspect on that simple enticing line that invites me to do just that!!! Using the search boxes is now understood and works fine w/ a simple click of the return/enter key.

wannadanc: I absolutely cannot figure out why you are unable to get a hyperlink on that text! I checked the code and the HTML is pure and perfect. There is probably a very simple and reasonable explanation for this, but it is escaping me!
Here's a direct link to the "Add a plant" link. Can you access this? http://davesgarden.com/plants/add.php
dave
wannadane are you logged in?????
To: JFC - My computer always welcomes me back by my screen name (on the home page) - I see no "sign in" option - am I missing something?? Once I came here, signed in w/ screen name and password, that opening screen has remained the same.
To: Dave - you are not going to believe this - but neither IE or Netscape reads that posting inclusion as a hot link ---- and I did go back to some other places on DG to where hyperlinks exist in the forums and found them to be highlighted in blue and quite alive and well and workable.
I just thought of one other variable that I can try. I do have an AOL account - both through my ISP, as well as a stand alone dialup through AOL. As much as AOL is the anathema to the speedy and trouble free world of web action, I will go over there to see if something can break loose there.
What a strange way to spend a very cold and very rainy Sunday! Thank you for your ongoing help and support.
If you have not logged out then you are still logged in. I have windows 2000 and was able to hyperlink the site with no problem as long as I was logged in so it was just a thought. Sorry I couldn't help I get to dg through yahoo and have never had a problem.
Interesting developments - and maybe some sense of this will develop.....
On my iMac, OS 8.6, the hyperlink does NOT work, no matter whether coming in on Netscape or via AOL/ISP.
on my iBook, OS 9.0, AOL direct dialup, and ALL links WORK!!!!!
It is less convenient for me to work from the iBook, but at least we have come up w/ a work around solution.
SO - is it the OS? is it the computer? I don't know and I won't be upgrading iMac to 9.0 for a variety of reasons...even if that would appear to be the obvious solution from this end.
There is some sunshine outside, beyond the rain, and that is a good metaphor for a day of cyber grayness. Thank you again!!!!
Wannadanc-Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. I'm glad Dave jumped in here on this.
Dave-I wasn't aware of conflicts with Mac and IE. I will keep that in mind. The Mac and Netscape seem to work much better together.
My links are all active. I wonder why some of the links aren't working....
Sharon
Gremlins all under control. I signed off, shut down computer, came back on and everything is here!
Sharon - thank you so much for your help. I used to use Netscape all the time, until I ran into a problem with some other site - a photo graphic one - and in that case, I had to make IE my preferred browser in order to post there!
What a wild and crazy world!!!
