Growing tigrinum with other lilies

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I read in 1 source(don't remember which one)that you should'nt grow tiger lilies with other types. Have never heard that before and was wondering why. Anybody out there have any ideas? I have some pretty close to some Orientals and Asiatics and did'nt see any problems last year. I was wondering what the potential problem would be and what to look for.

Tiger lilies are very resistant to a lily virus and can have it without visible signs. Aphids then spread it to other close by lilies that are more suseptible. Colour breaking in the leaves and flower is the one sign I am most familiar with. The lily is not a bad lily, it just gets a bad rap. L. lancifolium (tigrinum)

If you notice some of your other lilies getting virus and despite vilillant eradication, you can not keep it out of the yard, you may consider getting rid of it, but I have lilium lancifolium growing in large patches in our garden and they do great with the other lilies. I would hate to be without them.

I think of eradicating lilium lancifolium as picking on a healthy patient in a hospital of sick people. Just doesnt sound right.

This is a photo of asiatic lily lollipop. I got these bulbs last year from Van Dycks. Both lilies in the photo are from the same order. Is the one on the left with the color variations in the leaves showing signs of the virus? This is the only bulb that has displayed this behavior, the lily on the right looks perfectly normal. Do I need to destroy the bulb (sob)? If it is diseased, is there any other precautions I should take? TIA

My humble opinion is probably, but I'm not sure. Can transfer the whole plant to another area for isolation, until you get a firm opinion from an expert? Away from any other lilies. If it is virus, it may already have been spread to the lilies beside it. I would just take precautions. I have only seen a few with the virus and a few pictures.

Thanks echoes and Ken for the info. Makes sense to me. I'll keep a close eye on them and if no problems arise they can just grow happily side by side. Friday morning I finally saw the first growth pushing out of the earth of my tigers, Asiatics, and a couple of the Orientals! Spring really is finally here.

Thanks from me too Echoes. I did some further investigation on line and the photos I found look like my poor lilies. I pulled them out and destroyed them. Hated to do it but I planted so many varieties last fall, I didn't want to take any chances with the others. Thanks again!

Such a shame. Hope it didn't get a chance to spread.

Me too Echoes! I ended up pulling the one next to it as well. Upon further examination, it was starting to show the color breaking too:( I haven't noticed any aphids on my lilies yet, my irises are another story however. Since aphids spread the virus, do you think that both bulbs were affected when I purchased them in November? Or do you think that indeed the virus spread? Your advice is truly appreciated.

If it is a virus, you would have bought them that way. I don't think it could have spread that fast. But you are in zone 8 and I am in zone 3. I had Cote d'Azur for years before the virus showed up in it. And not in any others. Some are just more susceptible that way. Wish Inanda was around to advise.

Finally arrived. Yes, very def. virused. You done good to pull up and garbage. Sad to do that but you can find Lollypop quite easily. Maybe even in bags in your local nursery/hardware store.

Thanks Inanda. I hated to do it, but it just didn't look right. I haven't noticed any of the other bulbs from that batch showing the breaking but its worrisome. Just this last year I planted over 100 lily bulbs. I don't know how catchy this virus is but I would hate for it to become a larger problem.
