"Easter" Lilies

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

YOOHOO!!!
Tonight I am bringing home any unclaimed lilies left over from this past Sunday from our church.
I know these are probably forced L. LONGIFLORUM and won't bloom again til next year.

Should I put them in the ground now or wait til Fall? And if I wait, will they be OK in their present pots?

THANKS for any advice!!

They will be ok ini their pots, as long as you keep them well watered. avoid letting them go between extremely dry/wet/dry/wet cycles. Keep moderately moist at all times. I mention this because in a sunny area, the pots tend to dry very fast (in a day or so depending on size of pot).

I would plant the lilies in the ground immediately. They do better planted, so if you can, it is preferred.

THANKS so much kdjoe!!!

I will plant them ASAP....... just as soon as I find a spot- LOL!!

I bought 17 plants at our local Wal-Mart last night at a severely discounted rate. I plan to let mine finish out their lives in my shade cloth-covered hoophouse and then store the bulbs in dry moss in the frige until late next winter.

After unearthing, but before storing them I plan to break off numerous scales (the bulbs on these things are huge) and dust them with rooting hormone in hopes of getting bulblets to form while in storage.

I would love to have a field full of them blooming all at once.

ROFLMBBO!!
When I got to the sanctuary tonight, there were folks toting out lilies like crazy. I got 1 of only three left- LOL!!
When Secy called me this AM there were about 20. She told me to come and get them then but I just didn't feel right about it- would seem too greedy if I took them all. I hope everyone enjoys their lilies for years to come!
So now I have only 1 lily to baby so it'll get my full attention- LOL!!!

Dang!

Maybe you can find some at your local Wal-Mart clearance shelf.....

Hi guys,
I got several bulbs last year at a nursery end-of-season sale...paid $2 each for what appeared to be pathetic, sad, possibly dead/dying bulbs. Didn't look good at all, but I thought with good soil, compost tea, and a fall and winter of rain I would see what happened....It was only $2 per bulb.....
IT IS ALIVE!! I pulled the mulch back today to peek, and there were several very sturdy heads poking up thru the soil peeking back at me...LOL :) You just never know!! Sometimes what is an expensive, healthy looking bulb ordered from a specialty nursery(with all that postage..ugh!) never does well. Then the bargain, barely alive lily thrives...ya never know...
PS. Sorry photo is so dark...will take new one....:(

Very nice. Your asiatic lily has created offsets, too.

...and lastly, I picked up three little bulb marked Lily 'Triumphator', and was really quite sure none would go....put them in a spot that would not be bare if they didn't grow...and they all three did...amazing!

This thread proves how tough lilies are. I saw several potted Easter lilies sitting outside an accounting firm when I was on my way home yesterday. If they're there this morning; I may grab them (with permission unless I perceive they are trash).

Sounds like me woodspirit1, the ones I planted I bought from Frank's Nursery last year after Easter. They were selling them for .50 a pot. I only grabbed two because I wasnt sure what I was going to do with them. I planted one out front and gave the other away.

Well, the 3 pots were there this morning so I called the accounting firm as soon as I got to work. The receptionist that answered said she thought one of the employees was going to take them home. But she put me on hold and asked that employee who let me have them instead. I picked the 3 of them up at lunchtime.
I'll plant the one I have with them in front of my oriental lilies, since they are shorter and see how they look next year together.
I love free plants. (cackle, cackle)

I snagged one last year out of someone's trash.
Completely dried up and dead looking. I thought 'what the heck' and now I have 3 shoots coming up.

I keep hearing stories like that about lilies. Boy, are they tough

They will look good after ours are long gone. I may try forcing one to see if I can get a second bloom flush in the same year.

I brought a few potted Easter lilies home from the flower shop after Easter a few years ago and went ahead and put them in the ground. To my suprise, one of them actually bloomed again that year. I had seen an episode of The Victory Garden years ago that said they would sometimes rebloom, but was sceptical until I saw it happen. So if you've got them, it's worth a try-you may get a pleasant suprise this summer.

I'm thinking if they die back because they already bloomed once, I will put the pot in the fridge for 6 weeks and then bring it out and plant it and see if it will bloom again. Just a fun experiment.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

My guess is that if you give them a chilling period you've got good chances for forcing a bloom. Not sure whether you'd be able to get blooms again the following spring/summer. That would be one tough bulb really working its energy off that's for sure.

Maybe.....just maybe, I'll remember to post in a thread how it worked out.
