borytis & drenching

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

help!!!!!!!!!! last year i had borytis as i did the previous year. i also had a bad case of rust on my daylilies and iris, due to a lot of rainfall at the end of summer/fall. i had never had rust on either and all my plants acquired it last year.

i am wondering if i should be doing some drenching of the soil this spring? i sure would appreciate anyones knowledge about this. also, what do you use and how much per plant or area do you use to drench?
help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i want my babies to look good and be healthy.

thanks,

Debi,

This spring I would clean up all spent foilage and debris from the beds and trash it... don't compost it. Then I would start a spraying program with a fungal / disease spray, like daconil. Start spraying as soon as growth starts coming up. If you catch it early on you might have a good chance at beating it.

Poppysue, where are you getting daconil for your spray for botrytis on lilies?

I have it on my lilies and I have sprayed with a botrytis spray [copper] for two yrs. I was told to use it plus another one every other time I spray.
Alternating between the two.
Always clean up my lily beds in the fall and haul the stems [dead] off to the woods.

poppysue,
thanks for the info. i'm good at cleaning up the debris, learned about that here on dg, the first year i got borytis.
i will start spraying, as soon as i order in the daconil. i'm so grateful to have all you knowledgable folks here to help me in my gardening journey.

maxine,
i found a person on ebay that sells the daconil. here is the link for you.

If you don't mind if I stray from the subject a little, has anyone used Preen on flower beds with lily bulbs in them? Has anyone used it on the beds before the lilies came up?. Anyone noticed any harm to the emerging lilies. Thanks, Polly

pollu i'm an avid user of preen or the miracle grow equivalent and i have had no problems with it concerning my lilies. they still bloom beautifully and produce little bulbets. if you are using the one with fertilizer in it you might consider using the other, only because of the times you should be fertilizing the lilies may not correspond with the time you lay down the preen.

Thank you Debi!!!

Debi, I checked at a local nursery yesterday in Eau Claire and they told me it was taken off the market. Now I don't know if that is just in Wisc. or what.
I plan on purchasing some from the web site that you gave me. I was hoping to save the postage, but guess its not to be.
Between the gas prices [going up and up] and postage, am going to have to start thinking of doing something different. Possibly won't be able to run all over the countryside checking out each nurserys plants.

well i just did some checking on daconil. there are a lot of other products now saying that they are the same as daconil. the active ingredient in all of these is chlorothanlonil. i did a froogle search and came up with these. http://www.google.com/froogle?q=daconil&btnG=Search+Froogle
ortho garden disease control says "used to be daconil".
$17.99 &sh for a pint. a pint makes 64 gallons. my local nursery has this for sale @ $23.99/quart.
then there is LOV - liquid ornamental and vegetable fungicide, 12.5% chlorothanlonil $10.95 &5.05 sdh = $16.04 per pint. 2.5 tbs / gallon will make 12.8 gallons.
then fertlome on ebay was selling for $23.95 & actual s&h = $ per quart. the active ingredient in all of these is chlorothanlonil. here is a hyperlink to the fertlome. it does not say the amount to mix per gallon of water. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20540&item=4328981373&rd=1
hope this helps you out. i went to the daconil ebay site and it was timed out. i have a message into them asking if they have any in stock. i'll let you know when i get a reply.
adios.....................

pollyk, check with your Ace hardware as they have a coupon rebate going now on Preem for pre emergence of weeds. can only get 2 but with $4.00 off each 5# container that is reasonable.

I have used it off and on since it came on the market. Flowers works very good, but be careful in the garden putting it on the row that you just put seeds in. Wait until they are up [seeds]

Debi, I will wait on you for the info. Should have ordered it when you first posted it. They still had it then, but wanted to save on the postage.

Thank you too, Maxine! The Preen I am putting on established flower beds only. I don't want seeding. I was just concerned as our lilies are not up yet, if the Preen would hurt them. You guys are so knowledgeable, and helpful. Thanks, Polly
