I am sooo disappointed! I started 21 Morning glories several days ago-3 each of 7 different named varieties.4 of these varieties were all purchased from the same person on e-bay and I paid about 25.00.Of those twelve seeds only 2 germinated. All the other seeds, which were received from trades here at Dave's,germinated.100percent!!! I am wondering if any of you have had problems with MG seed germination purchased from e-bay.Should I e-mail this person? All the seeds were started at the same time with exactly the same conditions.
Here are the names of the "BAD" seeds; "Fujimusumi","Yamatoji"."Heian Akathuki" and "Akathukanumi".
I was so looking forward to these glorious blooms, and to see all of them rotting just breaks my heart. Thank goodness for all the generous traders here at Dave's Garden or I would have no new varieties at all.
Gail
seeds rotting!
rotting seeds ??? hmmm i would let the seller know they are rotting. they may tell you that they werent guarenteed or any thing but at least you can let them know that they are not germaniting and rotting. you can also leave a neutral or bad feeback and just say seeds didnt germinate. i know people hate to leave bad feedback but at least someone else wont go through what you are . FIRST talk to the seller/ they may send a new batch.
since you say everyones at Daves has germinated then i will not ask how you do them. as you apparently know the basics of them.
are you sure they cant be salvaged?? i have had some surface rot where the seed heads wont come off and have to help them a little.
i know this is fustrating for you and i wish i could say something to really help.
golgi, Sorry about your rotting seeds, and I agree with imzadi. Good luck. DonnaS
Just keep in mind that people that sell on EBay are regular people just like the people here. Don't use one experience to judge all seeds sold on Ebay. I have had great experiences buying seeds & plants from Ebay.
Maybe the seller doesn't know, although they are supposed to test for germination first.

Oh,heavens no, Michelle. I have had plenty of successes with seeds from e-bay.In fact, I just started "Berlin Blue" and they all germinated, and have 2 cold frames full of annuals and perennials started from seeds off e-bay. It's just that I was surprised at the poor germination on all the seeds from this particular source, and was wondering if others have had the same problem.
I am trying special techniques on the remaining seeds, and am keeping my fingers crossed!
Gail
I have a feeling I bought from the same person (three packs last week) that just makes me so sad. Have enough trouble growing them on my own. Has anyone e-mailed that person to let them know?
Antoinette
can someone tell me who( email it to me) as i jsut bought some japanese morning glories of ebay the other day. thanks
Please someone clue me in too since I just bought MGs from two sellers on Ebay.
Wanted to let you all know that I e-mailed the vender and she responded immediately, offering to rectify the situation. Good e-bayer!
Gail
This is part of the e-mail response:
" I do have more of the Fujimusume...but they are the smaller ones....I tried to pick out the larger ones, for auction I am going to nick and soak a couple of these in the morning and plant them Monday evening. If I have good luck with these, I will forward some of these to you on Wednesday. Thanks for the email....."
So I guess i'll just have to wait and see.I started the rest of the "fujimusume" seeds and none germinated.Very low germ. rate on the other three as well.
On the other hand, of the 10 other cultivars I started from other venders and trades here at Dave's, the germ. rate has been 85 to 100 percent.
For some reason I am having the same problem with some of the seeds I started. Not all were bought on bay, so I don't know what the problem is. I am trying some other ways to propigate and see if I can come up with a soultion. This is the worst it's been and up until the last two weeks I was able to germinate just about everone I started. Then all of a sudden I have seven that have failed to germinate. I look in the pots and some were rotted and some were as hard as a rock. So I am at odds right now. Oh and Heian Umi was one of them and I did get it on e-bay.
Dee
The seeds came in today. They are Seiyu, Heian Akathuki, and Fujimusume. One had about 17 seeds, the other two had about 24 seeds. I knicked and soaked five seeds from each pack and put them in tonight. Will keep you all informed if they do/do not germinate. It will be interesting to see what happens.
i got some of them to germinate but thats not where the problem is for me. as soon as i take the seeds with the tail thingy and put them in their cups thats when they rot on me.
i have had morning glories forever and i just cant get one to come up long enough to see it. i also noticed my moon flowers are dying today.
maybe its the weather???
Well,as of today I have 100 percent germination on all Morning glories from trades at Daves and the Berlin Blue I purchased from another vender on e-bay. The only "bad" ones were purchased from the one vender.I have nicked and soaked in solution of half H2O/half hydrogen peroxide and started in 6 packs with bottom heat, clear plastic cover on top.Sterile seed starting mix is just damp, not soaking wet.And light, 18 hours or more a day.I wish I could share the entire e-mail I received from an expert but her are some exerpts:.." seeds were without a doubt, very immature with severely underdeveloped embryos..."," alot of unusual 'hybrids' from Japan) tend to have thin seedcoats that are very susceptible to molding, even before(!) they are planted, and are more susceptible to fungal attacks than most other types of morning glories..."
" copper sulfate solution can sometimes be very helpful against pathogens and using this before or after the hydogen peroxide soak might do the trick for you...it would be great(!) if some of the rarer MG's didn't need this, but sometimes they do...;"
His letter was VERY informative, and he gave me some excellent tips(some of which I didn't follow,LOL!)
Hope this helps. I'll let you know if the vender attempts to resolve my complaint

Gerris2, I have a dumb question, why is that one can prune and train the Japanese MGs and not the ordinary kind like Heavenly Blue, Is it because the ordinary kind grow too vigorously. I am going out now to my little gh to pot up my J. MG They were germinated in those little plugs from Parks and need to get into some soil. Thanks for any help. DonnaS
I may be barging in here, rutholive, but I pinch alot of the regular types and they put out side shoots.I haven't ever attempted to train them like Gerris2, though, other than outside on my trellises.
Thanks, to both of you. I did get my 6 JMG planted into 4" pots and some of the other mg too. then ran out of time. Will try to finish tomorrow and i will experiment with pruning MG. Someone showed some photos some time ago of an mg bonsai and that is what I want to try to develop. DonnaS
Believe it or not, one of each seed is sprouting already. I did nick and soak them. There are five seeds in each cup. I see at least one in each that has sprouted. Will take a photo a little later tonight.
edited to say: these seeds are from whole packs that are from a seller in Japan, I believe they are different sellers than golgi's.

the ones with the tail thingys were planted but nothing yet.
mine came from the same seller you all are talking about. maybe thewy will come up
Breaking news on the seed front!! My e-bay seller will be sending me more seeds of "Fujimusumi". I am thrilled as these are the ones I was MOST disappointed about,as I had ZERO germination, and the photos are beautiful.
I was able to germinate only one "HATSU ARASHI" from this seller. None of the "FUJIMUSUME" germinated, they rotted unfortunately.
I had better luck with the "KANOKO", I got most of them to germinate.
Now you all have me scared! I bought a lot of Japanese morning glory seeds from eBay last fall and am just getting ready to soak them. Please wish me luck. These are the ones I have: Yamatoji, Asuka, Purple Shibouri, Blue Silk, Heian, Fujimusume, Mt Fuji Blue and Pink.

Just lurking and drooling. I don't have a lot of luck with morning glories up here - the season is too short., and I am thinking my dirt isn't right. I planted the first year and I got mostly leaves with only a few blooms (LOTS of leaves!). I would have thought that my soil was too rich but it was before I put in my garden dirt so it was very, very sandy. Then the next year I tried Moonflowers, but the summer was too cool and we got an early frost. Even fewer blooms.
This year I am trying some Cameo dwarf and Picotee. Hopefully the shorter plants will bloom more quickly! Does anyone have any other tips?
If you start them indoors in 3 or 4inch peat pots, you can get a jump on the season. I do it every year or I would'nt get blooms till September. Did you fertilize yours at all? I did accidentally a couple of years ago,and got leaves,no flowers. I was watering everything with that Miracle Gro hose spray attachment. I can't think of another reason, maybe someone else has some input. But don't give up! I have found that some of my Japanese Morning glories bloom a month earlier than the standard varieties. That may not be everyones experience, though. Good luck!!
Gail
Did anyone ever get their replacement seeds? I never did.
Only on one variety and only one seed germinated from Those! People are also finding that when these bloom they are not what they were labelled.
