now to start-

(Zone 7a)

Robin, Tell me what you're tryin' to germinate??? I couldn't live without vermiculite...LOL LOL

(Zone 7a)

Charlotte, My Mailman is working today...LOL He said he wish someone would have told him the Post Office is Close today..he he he.
Your envelope went out.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Well poo, I was so sure it was a federal holiday ! Jokes on me....you knew I was a nut !!!

Okay the deed is done and I have some seed in wet paper towels in baggies on the window.

When they germinate I will pot them (burying the whole plantlet-right?)

(Zone 7a)

Nope..just the root and stem.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

will do !

Milo, ME(Zone 4a)

Kimmy ones I started in the cups~~~~I tried canna, clematis, sea holly thanks Robin

(Zone 7a)

Did you do anything special to the canna? I germinate them in water. And I nick/chip them really good. Sea Holly seeds like to be fresh..So it depends on how old they are. And Clematis needs cold treatment..

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

What do you do with your brug seeds Kim?

(Zone 7a)

Ohhh boy! Are you trying to grow them? They require a little work.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

What type of work I am trying them to?

Monticello 4, IA(Zone 4a)

Kim,

I've enjoyed your various postings. Has anyone ever suggested you write a Seed sowing book?
I'd buy it :)

Mindy

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

That would be great-it could be a seed starting and comedy book ! :)

(Zone 7a)

he he he

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Trying to is the word! I can't say I have any seedlings yet.

I have them under lights and bottom warmth. They're in starting mix and I also tried one kind in straight vermiculite.

I was told to try peeling but I just can't seem to get the hang of it. I always ruin the seed.

So I've been soaking them for a while first.

(Zone 7a)

I soak my brug seeds...just enough to be able to peel the barky substance off. Then plant..I get 100% germination rate like this. I took this picture this morning. This one has popped out. It will loose the seed shortly.

Kim what information can help me know what seeds need cold treatment or soaking or ???
so if i get seeds I will know what needs what where do you get your information to know what seeds need what?

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Ahh, maybe I should give peeling a few more tries then.

Thanks!

Robin, Just figure out how hardy the plant is..Then decide if you want to winter sow indoors or outdoors...

Helpful Growing Tips:Annual flowers and vine seeds will usually germinate without any cold treatment. Hard coated seeds can benefit from being nicked and soaked in water before sowing. For example; Morning Glory seeds germinate faster when soaked before sowing. Seeds that benefit from cold treatment are usually Cold Hardy Perennials. They can be winter sown in the ground or prepared indoors. For preparing indoors, soak the seed for 24 hours. Then place the seeds in a ziplock bag in the freezer (very hardy plants), refrigerator (semi-hardy plants) until ready to sow. Therefore they will already be cold stratified and ready for sowing indoors. Always use good seed starting soil when trying to start new seeds. Purchased seed starting soil has the adequate growing nutrients for starting seedlings. Viola seeds benefit from darkness when germinating, others may need light and high warmth. Therefore do not cover the seeds with soil. Usually very tiny seeds can be sown right on the soil surface for germination. Remember to keep all seed starting moist until they germinate.

Thanks kim for the information big help

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh yeah, that reminds me of my bird's foot violets. Still no sprouts. How big are your plants now Kim? They'll be beautiful when they flower! I hope you'll post pics.

Maybe I should looking into purchasing some Gibberellic Acid. I could also use it on my clematis seed. I wonder if that's cheating?

(Zone 7a)

That was part of the CATastrophe. I have more seeds though...I'll have to start them again. Violets like darkness to germinate.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I have foil over them like you said. I wish some of your green thumbery would rub off on me!

Your cats sure cause a lot of trouble. Have you tried giving them their own pet grass to attack?

Milo, ME(Zone 4a)

Great, now that I know the correct way of sprouting brugs, my haphazard method is not gonna work for me EVER AGAIN! lol
Seriously, I had no idea you were supposed to peel them. I had a bunch that I had been given & they looked like cork. I just tossed them all into some potting soil & covered, and darned if every one of them did not come up.
I had so many brug babies here last summer that I ended up giving them to everyone I knew. LOL
I love the idea of taping the paper towel baggie to the window, what a clever idea!

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

just be sure to use very good tape if you have a cat and a puppy in the house :)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Here's a few days later..The Brugmansia is working it's way out the seed. Most of the time this doesn't happen. Usually the seed comes off in the soil for me :-/
