CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!! TO E & R. Time passes quickly when you're havin' fun.... Wish you BOTH many, many more!
My Seeds, Weezy's , sase's...Trades!
Rick..I've had my fair share of root canals!! LOL LOL Uhhhh I think I would actually rather be stiffed on a trade!! ha ha ha ha.
Yeah...Kim.... I AGREE!!!!!!!!!!! I've had a few dental implants done &"" being stiffed on a trade"" doesn't even come close!!!!!!!!
Happy Anniversary Alaska Rick! I have only been married for 14 years. My hubby always used to tell people when I turned 40 that he would trade me in for 2-20 year olds. I tell him he is not wired for 220! :)
I was a non subscriber for a while and enjoyed using the plant files but I wish non subscribers were not allowed access to the forums and our personal trade info.
Yes, Dave, how about reconsidering this?
Access to the first post of a forum thread is a good way for nonsubscribers to get a taste of DG, but I'd be happier if my trade list was only visible to subscribers, although I haven't encountered these sorts of problems (yet).
You'll be sure to catch Dave's eye if you post a thread about improvements to the trade lists over on the Dave's Garden Forum http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/dg/
Good luck!
Donna
Beautiful lily, Gumlla! What kind is it?
Happy Anniversary Rick, and many more!
I like the tradelists because it makes trading so much simpler. Many of our best seed collectors have pulled their trade lists because they've been besieged with requests that offer little of interest to them or just plain ask without offering. I've been thinking that perhaps we need to have an option as to whether our tradelists or even our member page can be accessed by non-subscribing members.
If I understand correctly, non-subscribers can visit the forums, but cannot post. I'm also under the impression that they can only see the first post. If that is the case, one could open a thread using the first post to state you have seeds to trade with subscribers only, then post your list on the next post. All this seems like a waste of space on a thread, when a link to one's list would be so much easier, if one has a list.
I honestly don't know the answer. I've had good luck with non-subscribers, and I've even managed to bring a few into subscription. I don't think subscription makes you a nice guy, or that non-subscription makes you a bad guy. And, as subscribers, some trade for enjoyment, some trade with a more serious intent. It would be nice to have the option to screen.
That's a lovely lily, Gumlla! I hope the bulbs I sent you do as well.
WZ Your bulbs are in the beds and I am waiting anxiousely for their blooms. I love lilies.
Kaleem
I hope they will be various colors for you. I'm surprised how quickly they arrived in the mail!
You've brought up an excellent point. It's not just the rude requests but the ones that offer little of interest in return. The fact is that a lot of the long time gardeners have aquired a list of more.. special seed and when offered just the commons, it's not always what we'd want. Maybe b/c we've already been through those, costs, etc.
I always feel bad turning down really polite and nice requests. It leads to a lot of sases although I don't always have the time and it dimishes the ol' seed list.
BUT, if Dave can't offer these enticements that were mentioned to non-members, how will he get them to want to join?
Often I just send seeds to people because they don't have any seeds I can use. It seems a waste to send them to me, but it also seems snobbish not to want to trade. It's always been an issue for me. Recently, I sent a box of seeds to KimGaither to SASE out, since they would just sit in my seed tote and waste away.
Many of the plants that others love to grow, and that put out lots of seed, are just not suitable for my climate. Other seeds are so generically labeled that I have no idea what they are. 'Dianthus' could be an annual, a perennial, or a biennial. With perennials, it may be a two or three year investment before you truly know what kind, color, etc. you've sown.
I'd like to help anyone get started collecting and trading seeds. I'd like to help anyone get involved in growing plants from seeds. Usually, if someone has nothing to trade that I can use, I'll just send them the seeds. I suppose when you boil it all down, we all have to deal with each individual request or chose not to deal with it at all. Unfortunately, some of the folks that have chosen not to deal with it are the people that we most want to trade with.
I wonder if it would make sense to add another option to the Trade List.... something along the lines of, "Special Trade Only." Of course, there's still the problem of people (subscribers and non-subscribers alike) who completely ignore "Trade Only" status and tell you they will send SASBE for the following long list of seeds, but at least that would help those of us who are trying to trade nicely but may not have a clue about the rarity of a particular variety.
No need to feel bad about turning down "really polite and nice" requests. Seems fine to me to respond with, "I'm sorry, but I don't have many of these and am looking for something really special in trade" or "sorry, no SASBE, I'm hoping for a special trade in return for these." If I don't think you will feel free to turn down requests, or to ask me to "try again" & dig deeper into my stash this time, then I won't feel that I can even inquire about special seeds. I've been going with the notion that there's no harm in asking, but if asking politely is going to make people feel bad about saying no, then I'm going to have to be lots more careful with my tentative offers/requests.
I know I keep mentioning the trading primer, but it seemed pretty clear in there that you shouldn't expect to trade common seeds for rare ones, let alone asking for rare seeds for SASBE. I can't be the only newbie who read it!
theres 3 things on weezys list that i really really want but one of those is trade only so i have not asked.
i dont have nothing on her trade list and second i cant find anything to offer that will grow okay up there.
i have lived there and i know its hard to grow things. i think i miss it more thn i have alot of places but gardening up there is harsh.
i think i miss the moose the most though. at first its starling to see them staring in at you in your window but it gets to where you expect them. always curious as to see whats going on. hehe
sorry got off the subject.
Many people also contact me (us) because they see photos or comments we post in the PlantFiles which is accessible to the whole world. It's not just the tradelists and/or forums.
More crazy emails this morning! ha ha ha. Now I'm being accused of not being able to keep a secret! Ahhh I guess it was suppose to be a secret??? huh Weez! LMBO!
Oh, Kim, it appears I was the only one who wasn't supposed to know that this person was unhappy with a packet of my seeds! LOL! I, on the other hand, feel I should have been the first to know. As you know, I finally got a response, and was told:
True, I had no proof that you were trying to scam me, but sometimes you've just got to assume the worst in this world.
I usually try to encourage members to become subscribers, but I sure didn't encourage this individual. DG doesn't need folks who assume the worst of other folks.
Imzada, Email me for the seeds you want. I usually don't pay any attention to whether they are SASE or Trade Only on my list, so why should you! LOL! You're welcome to seeds from me anytime.
oh my i am in the dark about who this is but it seems they just dont want to let it go. how rude.
i am sorry you both are going through this. Chins up smiles and hugs.
I am guilty of asking folks to trade things in the plant files etc. Because lots of you have no trade lists, whether it is because you are just not interested in trading or have been flooded with requests. However, I dont want something for nothing. I offer to trade things I have and if folks send me free send I always reimburse postage and usually round it up to the next dollar or so.
I did see one post on another forum that tickled me. The person wanted lotus tubers-which you know are very expensive $25 and up. The post read something like:
Wanted-lotus tuber for my pond for postage ?
if may be crass but I had to laugh- a few days later it read
bump- anyone ?
Ha you have got to be kidding !!! LOL
Ah, well, the old saying is, 'There's no crime in asking.' The fact that nobody is jumping in to offer lotus tubers should be a hint, but it only takes one person saying yes. We're a cyber pond full of lots of fish, so I suppose you're bound to get a bite eventually. LOL!
You know, sometimes just not responding is the best message to send folks, but I have a real hard time doing that. Maybe that is the biggest problem. It's really hard for some of us to say no or not respond, so most of the dilemma is within ourselves.
Even if it's hard to say no to a really nice request, don't get to thinking that traders don't prefer nice, polite requests Critter!
Can turning down a trade and insisting to send for sasbe really be miscontrued for snobbinish? I never even considered that!
