Sure , sure, officially at 4 something this morning it was Spring. But how come after a month and a half of nothing, I am looking out the window at WHITE SH...STUFF? ARGHH! And it was cold yesterday too, I worked at the greenhouse and it felt more like January than March. Temps only made it to 4 C. Today it's supposed to reach a balmy 7 C Woo Hoo! OK, enough complaining... Have a great Sunday everyone!
Happy First Day of Spring? NOT!
Happy Spring to you too Donna
lovely day here in Winnipeg, sun is shinning
so maybe more of that white stuff will melt,
Have a great day,,
Keep it there we've have enough! ;)
However if it truly snowed on Vancouver Island my heart is breaking......... I want to see Victoria in full and glorious bloom.
Well, in retrospect, it never lasts long here or on the West Coast, and although the West Coast probably doesn't need the moisture, we here in the Interior certainly do.
it is said that the weather patterns are a wee bit unstable during the equinox - yikes! 40k an hour winds, snow and driftiing snow, cold (wind chill minus 18) an old fashioned prairie blizzard
and on the way to the barns this a.m. CBC played Ian Tysons Springtime in Alberta - something to the effect just when you think its over we get a snow storm. you know this man has lived here a long time
Holy cow........did we ever get windy here, last night!!! I thought, maybe the house was going to take off, as in The Wizard of Oz! Dawn, is your dock ok? And Liz, ????? Yesterday, I was at the BC Council of gdn clbs, all day mtg and ??? turned out, we were all enthralled with the election results, etc. .......I keep thinking about not being able to go to the RU..drats!!!!!!! I so wanted to meet you all..maybe somehow I could swing one dinner or ?? with you?? Elaine
Just to prove that we did get some of the white stuff overnight too. As you can see it's not much and should be gone in no time. It might be nice to get a bit of moisture but it sure is hard on the flowers. We had to put the wire fence all around the garden to try to keep the dog out. It's not working anymore though, unfortunately.
I heard from my dad in Comox, just south of Sandy and about 2.5 hours north of us, they got snow, everyhtings is white, and he said it looked like it was staying.
For us here in Victoria, lots of wind, and rain, but the occas. breaks of sun right now. I was worried that all the blossoms would be blown off of the trees, but not the case, things are still looking very spring like.
I hope it's spring real soon for the rest of you.
Beautiful, sunny spring day here too, Precipice style (snow and -10 overnight)
We're totally overrun with Juncos--I've never seen so many! They're eating us out of house and home. Very tragic, yesterday--found EIGHT dead, broken necks, up against our glass windbreak on the deck. Hurriedly hung mosquito screening over the glass, and have had no more.
Doesn't look very nice, but can't come up with any other ideas. Suggestions? I've even tried drawing cobwebs with a sharpie, but it didn't deter the kamikaze guys.
Well, Lynn's explanation regarding the weather patterns being unstable during the equinox might be just what is happening with all this weird weather. Our snow is disappearing quickly and the sun is trying so hard to shine. ARCTIC HIGH, GO BACK UP NORTH WHERE YOU BELONG!
Sometimes the distance that your feeders are from the reflective surface makes a difference. You can help by moving them in real close(not great for mice in your house situation) or move them farther out. Sometimes in the spring they are just going to fly into glass to try and chase away that other bird they see in there, cause he might be poaching his girlfriend.
Thanks OFG. Happy Spring to you too.
Rosemary, I don't suppose you have a spare stuffed fake owl hanging about do you? I understand they're pretty good about scaring the birds away. Although...I guess you don't really want to scare them away do you. A friend of mine hangs long strips of shiny stuff in front of her window. I'm not sure what it's made of. Maybe you could try hanging some cds in front of the window. Those free ones you get in the mail are good for that. A friend told me to hang them over my strawberry plants last year and it seemed to keep the birds away.
Sandy
Still snowmobiling here, but it is melting some everyday from the glorius sunshine we've been getting. Nothing like prairie sky blue.
Good thread! Sorry about the SNOW on the coast- hope it did no damage, sorry about the birdies. Very windy here tonight, I can hear it howling out there.
The first of spring is only a date on the calendar! We are still skiing, snowmobiling (and shovelling!) snow in Newfoundland. If I'm lucky, I might see a crocus by late April. (Do I sound bitter!) LOL!
just went out with the dog, and we had a bit of frost last night. It's on the roofs and windows of the truck, but the grass isn't crunchy, so all should be OK.
Crazy weather! Woke up this morning to rain and +5.
Here's our forcast for today, I agree, crazy weather.
Text Forecast from Environment Canada
Victoria (University of): Issued 5.00 AM PST Monday 21 March 2005
Today Cloudy with sunny periods and 70 percent chance of rain showers except flurries over higher terrain this morning. Risk of a thundershower with small hail this morning. Windy this morning. High 10. Tonight Cloudy periods. Low 1.
Re birds hitting glass...This glass wall isn't a window into the house, it's just along the windy side of our deck. So the birds see the great outdoors on the other side of it...perhaps they would eventually get used to it, but so far not.
I've tried the owls--we had a robin trying to beat itself to death against a window one year. The owl worked for a day only. (the robin finally did, literally, knock its brains out. Ugly.) And this is such a large expanse--the equivalent of 4 full sized doors--that owls, or spider webs, would have to be nearly solid! I've tried strips of flagging tape, plastic bags, felt-pen dots. Haven't tried the CD's--that wouldn't look too bad, but I'd need a lot! Will try them on one panel, if I can find enough.
Thanks for all the ideas!
This sure is a neat thread: I get to know weather across Canada just by going through it. Here in Montreal, we get a nice sunny day with a high of 4 (low of minus 8). For us here, this is a nice day !
The snow is still there, but is is melting. The sun rays are more intense, Blue Butterfly bush (Clerodendron ugandese) is budding, Bougainvillea and Clerondendron thomsonnaie is blooming.
Finally, I can start using the 3-season greenhouse (the 3 seasons last only 6 months because Quebec's long winter takes up the other 6 months!).
I am leaving for La Romana, Repulic Dominica this Friday. Anyone wants rum, cigar, or flower seeds there ?
LOL......have you already had some of the rum Perry? ;)
Well, Jeanne:
Rain here, wind, snow only on the mountains. Nothing on Savary but a couple of showers and now a S Easter. My dock is fine and I'm sure so is Liz' but my flag looks like it was doused in petrol to be used as a torch. Wet and stuck to pole. today, glimpses of sun to tempt me outside but not until I make a pie from my Meyer Lemons as Ted comes back from Savary tonight.
It's snowin'and blowin and? on Denman?
OFG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got my package today. (big big grin)
Thank you tons and tons.
I can't wait to start planting them.
Darrell
You are sure welcome, Darrell. Happy growing!
Hi Perry. Hope you have a great trip. Thanks for sharing the photo of your gorgeous tree.
Rum and flower seeds sounds nice Perry. *Ü* Nice flowers on your tree. Is that the Bougainvillea?
Will (can) you bring back plants for your business as well Perry?
Nightowl2: That is what a bougainvillea looks like in winter. It will have more foliage in summer.
Lilypon: Will see !
Yes, this is a great thread, I enjoy the look at weather around the country, and of course that's always the beginning of any farmer's conversation! This morning in Northern (can never figure that one out, as we are really halfway up the map) Saskatchewan it is blowing and snowing, as it has been for about 5 straight days. The temp is not that cold, but with the wind, it's hard on baby calves. Here's a picture of one that we were getting ready to bring into the barn for the night.
I hope so Perry.......it will be great to see even more plants available: Ü
Eaglesview your pics say spring! :)
(from the lower part of Saskatchewan where we've had blowing winds, rain and snow :b....)
Hi Pat, nice to hear from you again. I know what you mean about the "Northern" thing. I lived in Edmonton and area for most of my life and always looked like it was half way up the province to me too, but was still condidered Northern Alberta. I have a step son and family that live w a y up North in Saskatchewan, at Buffalo Narrows. Now that is what I consider "North".
I have always been amazed at the resilience of these babies with calfing season always taking place in the cold early prairie spring. Makes them tough, I guess. The one in your phot is a beauty.
:Donna
oh that brings back memories - taking calves into the porch of the house and drying them off with my hairdryer, hoping their little ears weren't so frozen they would lose them
but with all the work and sleep deprivation and worry, i still love calving season
and on the subject of spring not, the first day of spring that started with a blizzard finished with freezing rain. the second day of spring saw more freezing drizzle and 3 or so inches of snow. for starters today we've had another 3 or so inches and it is supposed to continue for the next 2 days when it will be clear and sunny and oh yes COLD like minus 16 lows.
I love this province.
LOL ..... the only weather I want from your province is a chinook!
(edited to say we are now at 0C, the water is pooring off the roof, and the ☼ is shining again........thank you ALBERTA) Ü
