San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

and then saute lightly in butter? LOL Sorry!

Dick, are those banana slugs? Thank God, I do not have those. I would have no brugs left. LOL!! Squish squish squish. I bet they are tough.

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

this is a leopard slug a very close relative of the banana
the one in the pict is an average size
seen them larger & seen them smaller
the banana is all yellow
i have seen a banana stretched out to about 8" long
i think the 2 may even cross breed
because some times a leopard will only have 2 or 3 spots
how about a garlic & beer batter to kill them ?
then throw them in the boiling pot :-) ala Escargot
can you imagine the amount of Brugmansia leaf they could consume ?
why don't they hallucinate when they eat these nite shade plants ?
& become our nite mares :-) they must be immune ?

Dick

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dick, those are Seattle babies. Jeanette

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

well Jeanette
i will be happy to send them back to Seattle :-)
you have some of the monsters - eh ?
i keep hearing rumors that the indians use to eat them
but i can't find anybody to confirm it :-)

Dick

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sorry, I can't confirm it. Jeanette

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What makes you so sure they don't hallucinate?? The secret life of the leopard slug. I see a best seller coming. LOL

If my seedlings all turn out to be duds, it is nice to know I could start hybridizing slugs at little cost with all the brug food I have here. I had no idea there were so many kinds. Dick, you and I could start a slug business, selling them to little kids.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

You could sell them to poultry farms maybe. Ducks love them. LOL

Jeanette

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

just over the border in the city of Brookings Oregon
they have a slug race every year :-)
the kids go around collecting all these slugs hoping they find the fastest one
last year the winner was one of the smaller slugs entered
usually the larger ones can be motivated to move faster
the kids yell at the slugs they even blow on them :-)
they just can not touch them
i will try to save the story next time i see in the local newspaper

Dick

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

DIck I have been to that race and it was a hoot for sure! The year I went a huge slug won and the kid was crying he was so happy. lol

I had never seen slugs here until after I got three flats of petunias from a store. That summer I saw a few slugs and last summer I found a flower pot where they were having a convention underneath it! I got out the salt and did them all in. I wonder if the poor things got their new business done before death came?

Dick
he's not so cute
I don't like them necket
gotta have the shells on.....LOL

I had a pet snail once
but he got out of the little house I made him and started eating the paint on the walls
you could see the trail of where he had been by the line of missing chewed paint on the walls
DH made me put him outside

We don't see land snails around here
just the necket slugs
and I try to get my creatures to eat them
Most of the time it works cause I don't have a lot of slug damage

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Hey Dick, That's a mighty fine looking pet you've got there ! Is it old enough to start Obedience Training yet ? Bet it would do great on the 'downs', but perhaps not as well on 'sits', 'stays' and 'come on call'. With some work you should be able to get its CS (Companion Slug).LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Lol, balvenie! But, then, there is always the breed ring and BIS - Best in Slug!!!!!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

CA residents... is it time to get ready for these again?? Does everyone on the west coast have trouble with them??

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I don't know about CA, but I did some moving and shaking in my yarden today and first thing outta the hat - slugs, grrrrrrrrrrr, I despise them!!!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

YUCK!!!!

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

For those who want - buy the metal salad tongs - , I flaten in vise but a hammer would and use to pick-up in morning .
An MT ice cream bucket with plastic grocery bag instde . When done , tie in a knot and into garbage can .

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGA ROSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSE

We have slugs, pseudoslugs (carry a disease) and moonsnails that can get as big as a small cat (lol). I love the sound of the Crunch/Splat when I throw them against the wall. The birds love them all broken up.

YES, I am mean...it is me or them...and I am for ME! LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have to admit I am heartless too with snails, Carol!! I usually am not with other living things. I at times fear my after life will be me and all the snails I have killed, stuck together in a small box where I can't move but they can.

Maybe I should see if my parrot would eat them, them I would not feel so guilty.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

WOW kell, now that is something I never see around here, thank goodness, maybe you should sell them on ebay, hehehehe

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

That is one pest we don't have much of down here! Thank goodness!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank goodness for your family that is, Susie. LOL. They would be having baked stuffed ESCARGOT daily. LOL

Doris, I bet I could if I fed them cornstarch for a while. And added lots of garlic.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell, please keep those guy's over on your side of the hills. I had them terribly bad when I lived in Dublin. Since I moved here I probably haven't found more than a dozen of them. But I do have a terrible time in the spring with those little tiny soil slugs. You know the one's that don't have the shell.

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Oh,,,YUK, YUK, YUK.... I hate those slugs... I have read about and I pour my coffee grounds around my daylilies, hostas, etc. Have already found lots of snails this year & aphids too... warm January Well,, maybe all the good creatures will outnumber these.. fingers crossed. Elaine

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I carry a salt shaker with me on early morning walks and salt the ^%$&$^ out of them. I love watching the little buggers shrivel up!

Icky-poo! Slugs just seem so much worse to me that snails - like, oh, gross. You suck AND you're naked!!!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

ammonia solution in a spray bottle works well too.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Think my ammonia/water/palmolive mix would work?

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

probably better. Palmolive might reduce surface tension and enable it to stick better, but watch out for escargot bubble blowers.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

YYYYYYYYYYUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

My granddaddy let me salt snails but he said the land had enough salt without adding more. He lived close to New Orleans. I never paid much attention until the late 60ies when a hurricane brought in a 'salt rain' which destroyed some crops at harvest time, right here in southeast Arky, on the Mississippi Delta...I've taught my grands the snail, salt trick too but, just like my grand, I caution them about the damage too much salt can do...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I wonder what the secret is of Livermore, Patricia. I remember when I first moved to California. I was moving into my first house in Rockridge and saw them all over a plant by the front door. I thought they were so cool. I soon learned how evil they are. I am just glad I do not have the huge slugs. I would have to kill them, then add those so uglies to my after life nightmares.

Sequee, LOL....... " You suck AND you're naked!!!"

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell, I think the reason I don't have any yet, was because when I first moved here there was nothing but landscape shrubs and a few shrub roses. I tore everything out and am now putting in my flowers. I occassionally bring plants home from my mom's in Dublin, and I always end up bringing a couple snails home with me by accident. I have no doubt that within a couple more years, I will have them too. Most of my neighbors have very few flowers, so their favorite foods aren't abundant here yet.
