Yeah, I agree, with imzadi, the body looks an awful lot like a black widow. I would guess it is another of the member of the Cobweb Spiders Family (Theridiidae).

Going through the pictures on Buigguide.net and doing a bit of googleing, to me it most resembles those from the genus Steatoda.

I agree with eje that it is in the Theridiidae and it looks very like a Steatoda species. Here is a link to a Steatoda grossa picture that looks very close to your spider.

Here is another Australian species from the Theridiidae, which was called a Steatoda, but has been changed recently to an Achaearanea species. This one was found in our garden the same day that Fay found the Red-back Spider.

It is a very hairy, multi-eyed spider from a creepy family!

It looks like one of the Jumping Spiders, the Salticidae. There are a great number of species and I cannot find your one. ROTFL John. Creepy and scary and downright shudder-inducing is how I see that first one. The second one I don't like simply because he jumps....he's not too creepy in the pic though.

Okay, Here is what we are going to do to resolve this plight. Put the spider on the Bloodsteak plant and then- FLUSH!!!! Marilynne

We have jumping spiders here too, but I actually don't mind them (and I am NOT a bug lover, SPECIALLY spiders). They eat TONS of bad bugs and flys and they are happy to skitter away when you walk up. They get big, abdomens as big as the fingernail on my ring finger! If they would only eat the black widows I'd really be happy. I have to go out at night with a flashlight and spider spray once I spot a widow web. I HATE that!

your first pic looks like our native Katipo . except our spider has a red stripe down it's back bit.

okay i am wondering the same here bloodsteak plant what is that????



we have jumpy spider here too. are are black fuzzy white white dots. hmm hard to swat when jumping around from cats trying to get them.
