My first lilies .

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

My first lilies are getting ready to bloom soon here in Houston. I check on them everyday to see if they have bloomed yet. The anticipation is driving my crazy . lol I think the lilies are Coral sunset. I ordered them from a one of the co-op here on DG this past fall. As soon as they open I will take more pictures.

Gosh to be able to have lilies blooming in March would be wonderful!!!! Watching eagerly for your blooms, too Rose!

Well here is my first lily bloom Coral sunset. It was just taken moments ago. It was worth the wait.
Langbr does it look like your lily? This lily is from Aknapp co-op this past fall. I am also watiing one the lilies I ordered from you Brenda to bloom. All my bulbs are up or coming up. Thank you Brenda and Alice again for having these co-ops. It takes allot of work and time to put these co-ops together. Now I can blame Alice and Brenda for my addiction..lol

Thanks Moby

Rose - it is close, but perhaps a 2nd or third bloom might be a better comparison. Also need to see the pollen color to make a decision.

Brenda,
Here are a few more pictures . I hope they can help you.

The anthers aren't open yet to tell the pollen color, but mine had some slight spotting on the petals so I'd say Coral Sunset is not it although it IS a gorgeous lily IMHO.

Thanks Brenda. I think so too.
The name of your mystery lily .LOL

The Plant Files show the Asiatic Lily 'Coral Sunset' as http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/7681/
bloomingbulb.com show the Asiatic Lily 'Coral Sunset' as http://www.bloomingbulb.com/XQ/ASP/ProductKey.549/bulb.Asiatic%20Lily/flower.Coral%20Sunset/QX/cartProductPicture.htm

I ordered the Asiatic Lily 'Coral Sunset' from a co-op, but this is what bloomed. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/67347/ I believe it's really a 'Tropical Dream'. http://www.bloomingbulb.com/XQ/ASP/ProductKey.846/bulb.Asiatic%20Lily/flower.Tropical%20Dream/QX/cartProductPicture.htm

Personally, I like what I got a WHOLE LOT more than what I ordered!!!

Dstartz ,
I agree with you. It must be Tropical Dream. I know I label it right. There must of been a mix up some- where. Thanks for the correction.

Thanks Rose,

Your Asiatics are very pretty as well. You were smart to pot them up as you did, though for as much bragging as I do being the first to bloom, you beat me by a month!! Where are you moving?

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I live about 2-3 minutes from Nasa here in Houston . I love it here. I want to stay in this area. To be honest Steve, I was so surprised my bulbs have poppped up so fast. I have lilies coming up all over . I can't wait for them all to bloom, and to get more pictures. I love the bulbs I received in Akanpp and Landgr co-op. The best part the prices for these bulbs were excellent ( very cheap). I highly recomment both these ladies and their fall bulbs co-ops.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Wellllllll......I wasn't planning on another lily coop, but since I bought this huge new piece of land and there's virtually NO lilies on it I'm thinking a coop sounds pretty good this year too! ROFL

Donna that Tropical Dream bloom is lovely!

Steve/Patti - if you all get lilies blooming this early, is lily season over for you in May/June? Or do you get blooms all the way into August?

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Landgr,
This is my first year for lilies. I was wondering also if my lily season is over in May/ June or will they bloom until August. I guess I will have to wait and see. Just about all my asiatic are up. I will take pictures as they bloom. I will be looking forward to another lily co-op.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Okay, call me a dork, but I went and researched every lily I have to see when each blooms, height and so on. Most of my asiatics will bloom in June whereas the orientals tend to bloom later. Here's my lily list: http://www.q7.com/~erasmus/images/lilies/lilies.txt

I have my bulbs in pots here . I don't know why they are blooming this early. I have never grown lilies before. I thought they were pretty early too,but they are popping up all over. Maybe someone can explain more, or is this normal for TX?

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

I have them coming up all over the place, thougyh mine are not as advanced as Rose's. My lily season usually starts in April with Asiatics, though I'll get a stray Oriental or two as early as late April. May and especially June are the most prolific months for me. Lily season is usually close to over by mid-July. I had some Black Beauties last year blooming at the very end of July for me last year, but really nothing to speak of past Aug 1st. The weird thing was that I did have a lot of overlap between Asiatics and Orientals - some Asiatics making it into June and some Orientals in April/May. Most of the Orienpets, ironically, have been consistently mid-June.Tom Pouce/Casa Blanca were my latest blooming Orientals last year , finishing in mid-July, aside from the stray Black Beauty, which was in a corner of the yard with a northeast exposure.

Rose is a couple hundred miles or so southeast of me (actually 275 miles driving distance), so her climate has milder winters and therefore earlier bloom on most things.

Excellent data, Steve! (as always) You are certainly diligent in recording data or else have an EXCELLENT memory! wow

This is great info to have in trying to determine hardiness zone ratings. I seem to recall some data points referenced during some discussions this past fall that indicated Zone 9 was the warmest zone for the Orientals (I think it was Orientals....?). Does anyone remember the specifics?

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Rose, looking at your lilies in envy...

Steve, we had a very early spring & then a cold snap in April & August. My lilies, daylilies & iris all bloomed in out of sequence times. Did you have wierd weather too?
