Coconut Palm Trees

Has anyone ever started a coconut palm tree from a coconut...and if you have, how did you start it?

I started one years ago (1987) after a trip to Maui. I collected a fallen coconut from the tree at the guest house I was staying in. I packed it green with all of the outer husk intact wrapped in a plastic bag......forgot about it when I got home. Several weeks later I noticed the bag in the dark garage, and when I unwrapped it, it had sprouted. I planted it very shallowly in the back yard of our old home in San Diego. To my knowledge it is still there and growing taller.
Hopefully someone with actual knowledge on growing them can offer you some advice.
I do know the ones in the grocery store won;t sprout :-)

What kind of coconut palm is it when the tree produces small 'oil' coconuts, like in Mexico? Not the large 'water' coconut. Is this a question for palmbob?
