I was on the phone with Tracey (YES, our own dear Tracey) who talks way too long while I say nothing back, and when I got off, I hear a commotion in my dining room. I had been outside when Tracey called me and I had left my sliding glass doors open the whole time I was on the phone.
I went in there and OH MY GOD I had a humming bird flying around and 2 of my cats, one a bird hunter, were climbing up on things trying to get him. So I do what I always do in these situations, I screamed bloody murder which is what Molly Mouse and Gab were trying to do!!!!!!!! And then everyone went nuts. I had a terrible time getting them both out one hid and the other cat was on the hunt. HELP!! Please help me. What should I do??? I tried to catch him with a dish cloth. Will he bite me?? Or worse, stick that beak in my eye.
I IMed my DH but he is not in. Why isn't he here when I need him?
See him? He is way up in my skylights trying to get out. It is awful to watch.
help me help me help me
Oh, poor little hummer. Maybe you need to set up a feeder just outside you doors and hopefully it'll go to it. Best of luck.
edited for my good spelling or typing.

When I've had them in dorrs, I close the blonds and windows except the biggest one for him to go back out. I take anything that coud be disturbing to him away, and let him calm down enough to find his own way out. Given time, they've always gone out for me.
Kell he is probably a goner. They will not fly down and out a door. We had one in the shop with a sky light and it would not fly down and out. Just up. dont know why but even with a double garage door. He will not last too long without food.

OH MY GOD! It gets worse. THERE ARE 2!!! One has a bright dark pink-red fluorescent head head. It is amazing. He is on the floor right now but under a piece of furniture. I am afraid. If he comes out I guess I will try to get him with a cloth. But I think he is a baby. I must have the mother and baby. Is it too early to have babies? Maybe I can get my cats and lock them in a room inside so they have a chance to go outside and get their bearings. If they stay on the ground they are dead. I only see 2 of my 4 cats and they are glued to the windows watching the show.
I have no way to close any windows, and the ceiling is all skylights. One is staying up there and the other came crashing down.
Oh kell the poor little thing, he sure won't hurt you, just get your pets under controle and let the hummer be, then you can open the door and let him out.
I wish I were there lol

Kell -
He must be very tired by now, poor little guy. What has worked for me in the past (they also get stuck in the greenhouse!) is to take a regular house broom and stick it up there for him to land/sit on. They are usually so tired that you can just carry them outside on the broom (keeping it as far away from your body as possible) and set them on a shrub or limb to rest. They usually recover very quickly and take off.
Edit : Oh my gosh TWO! Get two brooms and take pictures of yourself while you are saving them!! LOL

If you can cover the sky light they will fly towards another light.
Yes, Kell. We want a movie of this like Candy said. LOL
They are tired?? I am so tired!!! This has been so traumatic for me. Forget the birds. LOL!! Sad but true.
My DH just IMe me back. And what does he do but chastise me for leaving the back door open and letting all the bugs in. His frequent complaint.
Look at this one, so beautiful. I shouldn't have taken his picture because he took off after I did. His wing looks a bit beat up.
I'd hang a feeder right by the open door, inside, and leave the room. Poor things.
Por birdies.....
????? How are you doing kell????? How are the poor birds doing?????and your poor cats????
Please let us know...and then you can go and take a nap!!!
LOLOL ROFLMBO!!! Kell, you crack me UP!!!! That last pic is priceless LOL...least they are separated by glass *can't stop laughing* That poor bird is more scared than you are. Where is donnaB when you need her....Calling DonnaB!!!
that poor little bird will be as exhausted as kell by the time it is back outside
LOL I thought the same thing, where are your friends when you need them! I thought shoot, Donna HELP!!! But I did not have her phone number, so then I thought I would call Trish (another bird person), but she is out today!!
Finally thinking, I had opened a window and pushed the screen out on the opposite side of the house where Molly is waiting. Anyway, this all took a minute. I scooped this one up and placed him on the open window sill. I was so afraid I had squeeshed him. I was trying to be so gentle. At first I thought his wing was too mangled. For he just laid there, see second picture. Then he perked up and moved to look outside.
Are they both out now???
Look at him close up. And my last sight of him he took off and I looked up at my skylights and I saw him zoom away. I almost got his picture.
Little Birdie
I saw a little birdie go hop, hop, hop (hop fingers on palm)
I asked that little birdie to stop, stop, stop (hold up hand, palm out)
I went to the window to say "how do you do?" (wave hello)
But he shook his little tail (wiggle bottom)
And away he flew! (flap arms)
I had thought the first little birdie had found the open window and escaped as I was trying to catch the weaker one. But soon after the pink headed one had flown away I could hear wings going and I found the first one in my living room on a window sill. Max, Molly's brother, was watching him intentlly.
I used the dish cloth and grabbed him, I was much more gentle for he had nothing to hold on to as the first bird did,. But sadly, all this time I have been typing and adding pictures, he is laying on his side at the open window.
So I think I will let the cats have him.
What an ordeal Kell! You are very kind to be so concerned about these little guys. I hope they (and you!) make it through this just fine.
Erick
I AM KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Donna and Trish would kill me!
But what should I do? He is still breathing. I have to go to work. I am sooooooooooo late as it is. I do not want to handle him more in case he is in shock. I put some water by his head but no interest. i wonder if a brug bloom would perk him up. He may smell the pollen.
awwwwwwwwww, pick him up and set him in the neighbors yard and go to work. lol
But what if it is a baby Julie, and its mother lives here? I would have to set it far enough away that Molly the hunter would not find him and bring him back and leave him on my doorstep. She gathers the meat for our family, or so she thinks.
Ok, I am off to work. Good thing I am the boss because this hummingbird excuse would not go over so well if an employee told it to me.
I went back out to the dining room and the bird is fully revived and flying from skylight to skylight. He must be a she and be menopausal. I recognize all the symptoms of not having a clue!!
She picked to fly inside instead of taking 2 steps to freedom.
I will let my DH deal with her when he comes home. My parrot is hysterical, and I am afraid this humming bird will make him sick. He has never been exposed to wild birds before.
It may knock himself /herself silly before it get's out anyhow LOL...I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh, but I can only imagine you are a hoot to be around. I love birds lol....Hummingbirds will know where to go lol...it looks like it's an adult hummer. They are very agile. Go to work and hope for the best. It will be ok, I'm sure it can out race your cat Molly LOL!
Kell if that bird is flying around like that, he dosen't need his mamma anymore...........ROFL......Just put it in a bush or someplace safe that he will have time to recove and he will be fine.....
I know you were really trying to catch those birds and they got the best of you Kell.....ROFL even more......
Dee
Poor little hummers. They will tire and then they are easy to take outside and as Dee said, put in a bush and they will go on and find some nutrients. They have to get nector often because of their hight metabolic rate and I am wondering if the one left inside will survive because he will not be able to get nector. I hope your DH gets home in time to help it.
OH MY GOSH! It sounds like a three-ring circus at your house, complete with Hummingbirds, Cats, and Kell running around waving two brooms in the air!
Poor Hummers....Poor Kell....Poor Cats....Poor DH!!! EVERYONE will be totally exhausted before nightfall!!!
Kell, your 1st picture shows the "visiting" Hummers trying to escape to the outdoors, but don't know how to get out through your skylights!! Poor babies!!! They must be frantic, exhausted, and hungry! I'm sure you echo their sentiments too!
What an experience you've had today! Good thing you're THE BOSS, 'cause that would make an awesome excuse for why "I'm Late For Work" story~!
Hope your DH finds the Hummers calmed down enough to fly back outdoors! Please keep us posted! :~)
My word, such an exciting thread and I just found it!!! I surely hope the hummer makes it, Kell, but you have gone the extra mile, if it doesn't, it surely won't be because you didn't do your best. I caught my canary that was being terrorized by the cat with a swimming pool net, but it was not easy. Good luck, I hope the birds make it and you do too!!! It is very funny, lol!!
I think there are quite a few of us that are "watching" this thread. Very exciting, but I'm sure we are all hoping for a happy ending for the littel Hummer.
Well, now that I have regained controllllllllllllllllllllllllllll. Kell, when you said that you were going to give Babykins to the cat, I nearly fainted. My po' ol' mind went a-flying. AND, you took so long to tell us you were KIDDING...... Don't you realize that some of us are faint of heart?
I think the saying my mother used to use, "It was like being in an insane assylum" comes close to your house today.
Hope all works out.
Nancy Lee
Oh you are killing me Franny. I am really a sensitive soul and will be so upset if it dies on me. I am at work, trying to get payroll done, so I do not know what is going on at home.
When I went to close the window just before I left, I could not see it. I thought it was resting.
And this is the truth..... as I walked from the front door to my car, 2 humming birds flying together and doing a graceful dance thru the courtyard actually buzzed me. I wonder if the second one got out the window as I was coaxing my poor cat Max from under the bed. I had yelled so hard at him, he may never trust me again! I threw him into the bed room and slammed the door. He is my sensitive cat, my lover boy, and is not used to such abuse!
When I get home I will let you know if Tom has found the second one.
Just make me a check out while you're at it Kell LOL! hehehe *evil grin*
Kell when they get over stress they go into torpor which was why he was laying on his side. He will be fine. Hope to put a feeder out for them so they can get back some strenght they expended trying to get out. Poor babies.
Kell, This is one for the books! This has been unbelievable.
I am the same way....I rescued an injured pigeon once, took it to a wildlife rehabilitator 15 miles away, my neighbors thought I was nuts.
Oh, how I laughed when I read the part about giving the little guy to the cats> OMG, too funny. We know you wouldn't ....
You tried your very best, and that is more than many people would've done in the same situation.Your heart is so good. Hopefully all will be calm by the time you get home, and he will be led back outside safely.
Jackie
I just know everything will end up the way it should! In the meantime thanks for the adventure!! We could see the whole show!! You had to leave an adventure like this and go to work!! Wow! What a life you must lead!! Hope all ends well!
Bonnie
Yes...here I was telling kell to let us know what happened and then she could take a nap! Joke, joke....no nap for kell !!! She is a busy bee...
