Hello all. I was given some Moonflower seeds today and noticed they were a little "fuzzy". I'm assuming mold. Some don't look affected. Should I try to plant a few or might they contaminate the soil?
Moonflower Seeds
All the moonflower seeds I planted did that and then they rotted. I was so looking forward to them too!
I have a good amount left over after germinating some (sowed 10 seeds got 10 plants).....if you try germinating your seeds and they don't grow, give me a holler and I'll share. :-)
You might want to dip them in a 1X4 bleach sollution before planting to try and kill the mold/fungus.
Thanks, Riker. I'll try germinating them tonight in some paper towels and see how it goes. I'll keep you updated.
Certainly....good luck! :-)
Well, I tried the paper towel trick and nothing. I also planted a few in peat pellets and nothing. However, I just read somewhere that I should have nicked the seeds? Any suggestions? I have several more seeds. It could be that they are bad, but I also don't know what I'm doing. LOL
I nicked mine last year and they sprouted fine.....this year I forgot to, and they still sprouted fine. I think the tricks is the 48 to 72 hours soaking first.
Oh and if you do try nicking them, I just used some very coarse sandpaper last year to 'buff' the shell.
I used a small nail clipper to make a small nick in my morning glory seeds. Almost all of them came up.
For mold on other seeds, I've soaked in water with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. It's worth a try.
Well, I've got three sprouts. Good enough for now. Thanks for all of the advice. It was very helpful.
Yippy! Good job loba! Be sure and let me know if you need any more seed....I still have lots :-)
Oh Lordy. Are you guys looking for the white moonflower bushes(Datura Inoxia)? If so, just email me and I can fix you up bigtime. I'd preffer to trade for other seeds but SASE is also fine. I must have a couple hundred seed pods laying around now with so many more on plants. Each pod contains countless seeds so I have plenty to share;)

A friend gave me some Moonflower plants, I picked some of the pods and left them on the porch (forgot them) and then in the spring 2 very hardy vines came up between the bricks up to the porch! They really grew (kinda like Jack's bean stalk) and were very "unusual" to say the least. I was FURIOUS when a friend of mine came in the house to say "Hi" one day, holding the plants in his hand and told me he had cut some "weeds" out of the bricks on the steps, saying they would have broken the bricks. There they were, blooms and all. I was not at all courteous in telling him to leave my flowers alone.....shall I leave it by saying the friendship has not exactly been the same since. (This is the same "friend" that used Round Up on several things in my yard when I was not at home, thinking he was "helping". I had many times told him I'd let him run his farm like he wanted but he was to let me run my yard like I wanted.)
I have plenty of moonflower seeds, if anyone wants some.

For one thing, isn't it a little early for sprouting these? Here in NE Florida they self seed once they have been planted and do so in abundance.
Jeremy says just a couple of hours of soaking was all he ever did and was surprised they were such a challenge.
Good luck, save a few to just put in the garden about April 15th.

Woofie, send a SASE with a note asking for Moonflower as I have several seeds offered for trade. They are self seeding here, I have to make sure that all the seeds are picked up, or in the spring, I pull up the new plants.
Howdy friends;)
I have a BUNCH of different seeds and will have tons of cuttings to trade shortly after they let me out of this hospital bed. I've been here since the 1st. and was told it would be a 3-4 week stay. My point being, I haven't hadtime to organize my boat loads of seeds so I don't know or sure what I have to trade. I will ASAP but nada now.
I'm desperately seeking colored moonflowers in bush and vine form. I believe I still have seedsof single and double yellow datura. I also have double and triple purple dats and some of both colors are ruffled too. So I know I have a few of them to trade plus TONS of the white moonflower(Datura Inoxia) to trade of give away for SASE.
If anyone has seeds of colored moonflowers/vines to trade or sell, PLEASE let me know. My wife was on me hard about this lastnight when she noticed I got a net connection to this laptop.(Lord I'm on dial up so grant me patience;).
I'm really wanting some more color with these, mostly the vines . I'll have all kinds of cuttings to trade in early spring when my "parent/donor" plants grow large enough for many many cuttings to be taken.
I'll have many various Passion flowers, brugs...my brain/memory fails me now. If anyone would or could help me find some colors to add, I'd be very greatful.
Thanks so much!

I just saw some Lavender Moonflower Vine seeds last night. Here's the link:

And here's the pic
Anyone know if the lavender moonflowers are fragrant, like the whites are? (Our white ones are VERY fragrant!)
The lavender ones seem to be more of a night blooming morning glory to me, probably due to their much smaller flower (compared to the white moonflower/calonyction).
