What do you usually direct sow each year? What has done better then others? And what would you never direct sow?
Alice
What do you direct sow?
The gem marigolds I direct-sowed last year actually did better than the ones I started inside.
These are the sees I have Winter sown this year. Most are sprouting now.
Dianthus
Marigolds
4 O'Clocks
Cleome
Bachelor Buttons
Rudbeckia
Castor Bean
Scarlett Runner Bean
Red Cardinal Lobelia
Zebra Grass
Blanket Flower
Foxglove
Zinnia
Daylily
Red salvia
Blue salvia
Crocosmia 'Lucifer'
Moon Vine
3 different morning glories
Penstemons, columbines and poppies are three that I almost always direct sow (not winter sow) although I do sow them in the winter-in situ.
oh, good news there about the columbines.... I got some generous trades, and I will direct sow them at once under my baby pecan trees! I'm also going to direct sow poppies under several of my dwarf fruit trees. Can't wait to see them pop up! Caron, can you advise how much I need to hoe up the "volunteers" in the orchard area before sowing (there are some grass clumps, but it's a mixture... some bare ground, too)?
