My mom was trying to remember a story/movie about a couple that meet every year under the same tree or maybe near a bench year after year. They aren't married--at least to each other, but they meet the same time each year or something like that. I gave up after trying to remember what it could have been....anyone remember a book or movie with this type of theme? I'd love to be able to call her and say "oh yea--now I remember--you were thinking of...........
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Anyone recollect this storyline in a movie or book?
Could it be "Same time next year?". I remember a movie like that but it was a hotel or something they meet in. I think that one was Alan Alda.
That has to be the one, 'Chele... Same Time, Next Year...
Gee, read a book like that. Hey meet in the geezbo in the town square. Can't remember the name yet, but give me time = as I remember it was a real tear jerker!!!
Seems like there was an older movie too...About Mrs. Smith???...
shelly Winters? AHH Old memory chips not working well. Jo
I think it is Same time, next year. Alan Alda and who was the woman? At first I thought Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeves, but i think it is that movie.
Here's the movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078199/
The user comments are interesting: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078199/usercomments
I can't remember if I've seen this or not. I'd like to, though.
GW, there is another one about a bookshop in London and an exchange of letters then a meeting? My old memory chips seem to be like Jo's. *smile*
Pati
And it wasn't An Affair to Remember, right?
Aw man Patischell I just saw that movie about a month ago too, Dang it I cant even remember what it might be.
You're not thinking of "Sleepless in Seattle", are you? That was a remake of "An Affair to Remember". London didn't figure into it, though.
How about September Affair?? Jo
That doesn't sound like it, but it sounds interesting. Begs the question...If everyone thought you were dead, would you let them know you weren't? What would you do? Interesting group discussion!

Nope not sleepless in Seattle, I would definatly remember that movie, LOL. It was a lady who lived by herself and she wrote to a store in London about a book they had, she and the owner of the store wrote to each other for years. It was all based on friendship and books, really neat story.
You're getting closer, Dravencat......come on now, THINK!!!!!

84 Charing Cross Road (by Helene Hanff) is the book about an American woman and a British bookseller durinmg WWII... basically an exchange of letters, then friendship and finally (many years afer the war) a real visit. One of my favorite books and absolutely a must if you are a book lover.

Well, I thought sure it was going to be "Same time, Next year"--but she now says she remembers it was a black and white movie--(she thinks). I showed her the website you pointed to GW, but she says it wasn't a real recent movie. I'm sure it's not Sleepless in Seattle--I've seen that one about 4 times and I own the soundtrack to it. That's one of my favorites! I've never seen "an Affair to Remember". Do they promise to meet each other every year or every couple of years. I don't know--I thought we had it with the first movie mentioned.. So many good suggestions, So Close, yet so Far. I'll will have to rent "an Affair to Remember". Maybe that's it.
Dcat, I don't think they stayed in touch with letters--it was more like a promise to meet at a particular date/place--and the trust that the other person would show up as promised years later.
Who knows, I'm beginning to think my mom made it up, and anything I suggest is not going to be what she was thinking of! :~) Any other suggestions are welcome--I'll have to rent all the movies mentioned here just to make sure that it's not the "One".
And about not letting anyone know I really wasn't dead...my life that I was trying to leave behind would have to be extremely bad.... So with that in mind, I personally would have to let my family know that I was fine as soon as I could. I wouldn't mind getting away for a few days--maybe even a week or two--but not for the rest of my life..
Thanks again everyone!!!
Patischell,I remember that London one with the letters but can't think of the name, I have the book somewhere. Isn't the name something like 66 name of street? she was writing to a man who owned a bookstore in Bloomsbury (area or?) and they exchanged letters for a long time, then she actually got to meet him. I cannot for the life of me think of the name!

The London bookstore/letters movie was probably "84 Charing Cross Road", but that wasn't the original question I guess.
could it be this one..... Emily Grayson - The Gazebo......
nminmd, did the couple finaly get together "after" they had died or met one last time after they died? Maybe something with Cary Grant?
There have been two or more films made with the same time next year theme, I think it was originally a Neil Simon play but I've got a swiss cheese memory so don't bet on it. Somewhere in Time was different, he (Christopher Reeve) fell in love with a woman from the past, and tries to send himself back to be with her. Sleepless in Seattle was a couple who were emailing each other, and finally met, and ...........etc. They remade "An Affair to Remember" too, but I forget who was in it. I think it was a made-for-tv movie though, not like Sleepless which was Tom Hanks and I think Meg Ryan. I'm pretty sure this wasn't one bit helpful LOL sorry!!!
84 Charing Cross Road ....Yes, yes, YES!!!! I'm so glad there are people who have a memory. Mine is wearing out, or maybe just too full! LOL
Pati
Nancy I broke down and called my mom who can usualy remember any love story. Sorry to say she said it didnt sound familiar at all.
Thanks for driving me nuts! I know Ive seen a movie with this theme, in black and white but its been so long. GGRR LOL
My head is going to "bust". Now I have books to read and movies to watch. This is going to take a while. Thanks everyone.... 84 Charing Cross Road and the Gazebo--were they good?
Anyone remember anything about initials carved in a heart when they were young and promised to meet at that same tree in so many years and then they actually meet there. I hope she doesn't have two movies mixed up together.....
Dcat, Anytime you want to go crazy, come along with me. I'm pretty sure I know how to get there..
84 Charing Cross Road, the book, is a touching and lovely story. I recommend it highly, and it's a Keeper. Didn't see the movie and don't want to...
I remember the movie!!
It was in the late 50's, early 60's B& W. It was about a teacher and her teenage student and you can guess the rest. Of course in those days one had to have an imagination for nothing was shown.
Drum roll please...............
Under the Elms.........
Yes?
Nancy Lee
Nancy Lee, that sounds like "Tea and Sympathy" also. Makes you wonder how many times the use the same story line for so many movies!
Pati
I thought of Gazebo right off.....dont know if that is the one your mom was thinking of though.
I really liked 84 charing cross road. it was a good book....
Yeh, Pattischell, I think that you are right.....Gee, you're old too, huh?
Then, what was the movie, Under the Elms?
Nancy Lee
I just loved the Charing Cross Road. There was a second book when the author finally made her trip to England, except the man she had been writing to had passed away. she met his family and the people who worked at the bookstore. I remember she was always sending them gifts, like nylons for the women which at that time were impossible to get, and finally she met them. that book was excellant also, but sad as I don't think he was alive at that time.
I did not see the movie as I wanted to remember the book as it was written.
84 Charing Cross Rd, the movie, had Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft and was really well done and incorporated her visit to the bookstore after he died.
The Gazebo was Glenn Ford and Debbie Reynolds in a movie about building a gazebo and burying someone under it... believe it or not it's a comedy.
"An Affair to Remember" starred Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. He was a celebrity and they met on a cruise. She didn't really believe he loved her, certainly not a lasting love. So she agreed to meet him in a year at the top of the Empire State Building.
He showed up. When she arrived on the street, she was running across it and looking up and a cab hit her. She was paralyzed and never tried to contact him again. ...
Not telling the ending, but it was a two-hanky tear jerker. I loved everything I ever saw Deborah Kerr in, including The King and I with Yul Brenner.
Thanks! I just added these films to my "must see" list at imdb.com!
84 Charing Cross Rd. (1987, Anthony Hopkins & Anne Bankroft)

The Gazebo (1959, Glenn Ford & Debbie Reynolds)

I adore Anthony Hopkins. Howie and I both really like character dramas, good people stories.
Anyone see "Million Dollar Baby"? Woah. We saw that Sunday night and were blown away.
GW, please read 84 Charing Cross Road before seeing the movie! Thin book, easy read in an hour or so and the library should have it.
84 Charing Cross Road is a dream of a book and the film was amazingly wonderful. Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins really brought those folks to life and it was very lovely, touching. One of my favorites. We just don't expect Hollywood to be true to a book like 84CCR. And it is nonfiction. Any book lover feels quite at home with this book and as well as the film.
My husband and I took turns reading parts of 84CCR to each other as we traded off floating in a wonderful freshwater pool at the bottom of gentle waterfall in an isolated area in the mountains of North Carolina on one of our vacations. Heaven!
Wow, what a neat memory to share with your husband, Mariajose...Makes me sigh. :) I just put a hold on the book at the library and will get it this week (when I pay my fine - oopsie). Thanks!
One of my very favorite books of all time, 84 Charing Cross Road. The movie was plenty good too, but I didn't see it for years after reading the book. I usually can't watch a movie at all if I loved the book. This one was good though. I've been buying DVDs for my collection recently. Today I received "Fried Green Tomatoes," "Seven Years in Tibet," "The Color Purple," "The World According to Garp," "Driving Miss Daisy," and "Out of Africa" (another stupendous book where I had a hard time seeing the movie, but I still loved it). Anyone have any other suggestions?
stellapathic, those are some of my favorite movies too. My very favorite movies include Harold and Maude, King of Hearts and Babette's Feast.
