feldon30,

Does anybody in the south sell anything but Bonnie's plants?

As for potting mix, if you don't want Miracle Gro, forgot it. One nursery does carry Fafard and the Farmers Association carries Pro-Mix, but since they have the only game in town, the prices are outrageous, three times the cost of Miracle Gro. Last year I wanted some Azalea/Camellia mix to pot up blueberries and some cactus mix for dwarf citrus -- I called every nursery in a 50 mile radius, which includes Birmingham. Not only didn't they carry it, I didn't find a single person who even knew what I was asking about. I ended up having amend Miracle Gro.

I am going to check Lowe's on Monday for the Triple Crowns. Last year I was standing in line at Lowe's to pay for a Dwarf Meyer Lemon. The lady behind me asked what kind of plant it was. I told her it's a lemon tree. She says, "Does it grow real lemons?" I just said, yes. My daughter said I should have told her, no, it grows plastic lemons. LOL. I wish she was atypical but she's not.

Actually, the choice of plants in Houston can be very good depending on the nursery. Houston Garden Centers, Houston Plants & Garden World and Cornelius/Calloway's carry the Chef Jeff's line ( http://www.chefjeff.com/plantsmain.html ) as well as a few others. Wabash Antiques in the Houston Heights area has had some amazing choices in the past (that's where I bought a Carmen pepper and a Black Cherry tomato plant). And Buchanan's, also in the Houston Heights, has had some interesting choices as well.

I've seen Sungold, Isis Candy, etc. along with the Chef Jeff's range which is pretty good as far as selections go.

Cornelius and HP&GW have fruit trees appropriate to our climate and a large selection of specialty fertilizers such as the citrus, cactus, succulents, azalea, and rose mixes you are talking about and all at reasonable prices.

In a perfect world, strawberry plants would be available in September in Houston. But I do realize how lucky I am sometimes. :)

You are very, very lucky. The "real" nurseries here, all two of them, have less selection than either HD or Lowe's, and it doesn't get any better if I drive 50 miles to Birmingham. I do a lot of internet buying.
