Repellent?? Crocus and miniature iris flowers all eaten!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Hello. Yesterday I had a gravel berm with 3 kinds of minature iris and 5 kinds of crocus in bloom. Today there is not a single flower. No shreds left around and they were definitely chewed off, so I think it was my squirrel, not birds. I live in the city in Denver, and do not have any critters other than squirrels, birds (and cats, dogs and children). I have never had any bulbs dug up and eaten, that I know of, and this is the first time these flowers have been eaten! Early pansies are ignored.
I am hoping someone has a repellent formula that I can spray on the delicate flowers to give the culprit a *mouthful* of ugh! My second choice would be something to spray on the gravel mulch itself (and groundcover foliage) to repel him. I do have alliums planted all over this gravel berm, but apparently not enough (or it is too early).
Thanks for any help!
Ah! I just looked out the window, and there was my (fat!) squirrel nosing around the crocus foliage! I've got to stop him!

Sally,
I'm also in the Denver area and I had the same problem with mice. The little rascals where digging under my beds and making mice homes. I was desparate and didn't have time to mess around with mail order (everything would have been gone). I got some "critter ridder" at home depot for around $10.00 and that seemed to do the trick. Let me add that I'm not sure it was the mice. It could have been squirrels. Stuff smells terrible but seems to have done the trick. I have seen other forums where people have recomended better products that are mail order but like you, my early stuff would have been gone in the time it took to get here. I also intend to go to O'Tooles and see what they recomend as I always get great advice there. Good luck. I feel your pain.

Sally,
I think I found the forum that I was thinking of. I don't know how to paste the link but the product I was trying to remember is called liquid fence.

Hi, it's so frustrating and it makes me crazy, too, to have the baby plants eaten up in no time! If you look on the "bulbs" forum thread list there are several referring to 'squirrels/pests and bulbs' etc. that give all kinds of remedies and ideas to try out. --pepper sprays, moth balls, rotten eggs potions, etc. and the recommended store bought stuff.

also, to add a link just highlight and copy and paste the url into your post. it's easy (even for me!).

good luck. t.

I called Brent and Becky's Bulbs, as I had ordered these bulbs from them. They called back and said try Ropel, and did not think it would even hurt the flowers. I found it at a local small garen center. I sprayed it on a few of a number of different varieties of bulb foliage and on a few brand-new Iris reticulata and crocus in the late afternoon (not in a lot of sun). WIll report back if it works, and may expand use to sempervivums, as he eats those, too.
