Spring?

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

The Home & Garden section of the Dallas Morning News on Friday said that our average last chance of frost is March 17th. Yipee!!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

April 7 for me and I am not that far from you!?!? Can't believe everything you read in the paper, Terrie.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow! March 17th and April 7, how can you wait that long!? I'm hurting for you...

The redbuds are budding here now, some azaleas too. And I can't get over how many roses and buds I have on my Ducher!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Gotsum hydrangea shoots, daffs and dandelions blooming, though. Stuff is growing!!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh yeah, hydrangea shoots here too, daylilies have pushed out of the mulch, some of my poppies & delphinium are bloomig, and I finally have sweet peas!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

I gotta try sweet peas. Its not to late is it?

John

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

I read somewhere else that they planted sweet peas later than usual last year and still had blooms. If you can, I'd get seedlings.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

I'll try that. The heat comes early.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

It's starting to feel like it's almost here. Besides the multiple types of bulb foliage popping up (tulip, daffodil, crocus, allium, naked ladies, hyacinth) around here, I see green pushing through the dirt on my Autumn Joy sedum, new daylily leaves, new growth on the hydrangea, several Salvia coccinea seedlings, and a ton of fall aster seedlings. Yay!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

This is just my second Spring with actual flower beds to work with. I have all kinds of little seedlings coming up, but how do I know which ones are weeds, and which ones are last yr's stuff re-seeding? I think I pulled a lot of wildflowers up by mistake last year, but I was paranoid about weeds getting a stronghold of my new beds.

There are a lot of what looks like "Coral Nymph" salvia seedlings all around where that salvia is - the leaves look the same - but I can't really tell on toher things that are sprouting.

The first spring growth on many plants (called rosettes) are often quite different from the muture plant. There are pictures out there somewhere that show this difference. You usually end up learning by experience, often the hardway, how to id them. It pays to put out labels until you are comfortable identifying the new growth before the plants go winter dorment. You could post pics in the id forum and someone there will likely id your plant.

I'm in 7a. I've got daylillies 2 inches high and clematis beginning to show leaves. I pretty new to gardening, but usually we are completely safe after April 15th. Some say wait till the mesquite blooms...I say when the wisteria blooms we have one more hard freeze.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

John, thanks for the ID forum idea. I keep forgetting about that forum!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Someone will come to your aide, I am sure. We some talented DGers!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

John,
I bought some sweet pea seeds yesterday. I was surprised at how big they are.

Maggie,
I learned the hard way about the difference between weeds and seeds. Now, I wait until I am sure before I start pulling!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah, I figure if I'm watching them closely, I can still pull the weeds before they actually become established.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Did you get the bush or vine type?

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

I pulled up some coleus seedlings last year. Dh and I bought some, and sort fo scattered them out here and there to see what would happen. I had forgotten all about it, and was out pulling weeds. I had pulled up quite a bit before I remembered the coleus. After it got past the seedling stage, my husband made a comment about how much nicer it was growing on one side than the other. You can imagine my embarrasment when I had to tell him what I'd done. *blush*

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

;-)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

That's exactly what I mean!!

The vining type, John.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

I will do both types.

Austin, TX(Zone 8a)

I am envious Maggiemoo!!

I always get so impatient this time of year. Spring just can’t come fast enough. I know it is right around the corner. I have been doing a lot of weeding and clean up but haven’t moved my pots outdoor yet. Sure thought about it.

My hostas, and daylilies all have shoots and the daffodils are blooming. Love spring but then I start the battle with the deer. They think my place is the salad bar buffet open 24/7.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Do you have an indoor cat? I saw somewhere that you can spread used cat litter around your flowers and the deer stay away.

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

One of my azaleas is blooming! And the crocus, daylillies and iris are poised & ready! I'm thrilled to death.......my ferns are back too, and even the bed begonias have begun growing back!

I LOVE spring......it's just so fresh and cheerful!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

When I was coming in the house earlier I noticed I have buds on a few of the crocus!! I am so excited! I noticed a little begonia poking through the soil here too MKJ. :) I feel like a little kid.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Some of my azaleas are partially bloomed, and I just noticed today that my spirea (bridal wreath) is covered with buds that weren't there last week! Some of the trees suddenly have small leaves on them, one of my wax myrtles has lots of new leaves, and my river birch and trident maple have lots of leaf buds.

Makes me want to do a Spring dance!

Austin, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't have a cat but know someone who does. I am afraid that I would have to put it everywhere. We are invaded with deer here. They eat everything, bushes, shrubs, flowers and ruin the bark on the the trees. I have netting around everything. I swear they all talk and spread the word that "If Sonnia planted it, we can eat it" Before I got the fence area, every year they would have their fawns in my compost pile. They have even tried to eat my artificial flowers that I used in some areas they wouldn't leave alone.

I do have a small area that is fenced, so get to do some gardening without worrying about them. Thank goodness. :-)

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

My crocus is BLOOMING today!!!!! I'm so excited--the rains over the last few days have boosted all of my bulbs--I swear, in just days' time, the iris and daylillies have new straps, the daff's have popped open everywhere, and even my pyracantha was covered in new growth (which I plucked, since it's a standard!).

I'm THRILLED.......I love spring.......I love spring........lalalala.........

Center, TX(Zone 8b)

They're saying that we are going to have a frost tonight! My burg's are coming up guess I'll have to cover them this afternoon. I'm in East Texas and north is going to be even worst so everyone better prepare for tonight.

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

Maybe I haven't had enough coffee this AM........but, what's a "burg," brendabloomer?

MKJ

Back of Beyond, TX(Zone 8b)

Could be she meant brugs.

Back of Beyond, TX(Zone 8b)

Ok, say or think whatcha will, but spring IS here!

Sightings as of two weeks' ago:

daffodils sprouting, leaves, flowering quince barely beginning to bloom, a hazy green fuff on trees, my grape hyacinths, whch sprouted leaves in January, blooming some.

NOW, daffs blooming, flowering quinces blooming (one of the earliest things to bllom each s[pring, grape hyacinths in full bloom! Thw weeping willows are said to be one of the final things to leaf out, meaning they take no chances on getting nipped, and they are sprouting little leaves.

Dandelions bllomin all over the too-wet back forty.

The fig tree on te coldest side of the property (northside) are getting their leaves also.

SPring is being sprung !! woo~hoo ! And the meyer lemons are ripening.i

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Well winter seems done fer! I can see a feint green cast when I look over the wooded areas.

John

Back of Beyond, TX(Zone 8b)

John, where is Gordonville close to?

Weatherford, TX(Zone 7b)

Dont ya just love it when one morning the trees are naked and the next day there are green leaves all over. Yes love Spring!!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

OldOake, two miles south of Lake Texoma in extreme norhtwest Grayson County.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know trees very well, but someone at work told me all those tress suddenly covered with near-lime-green leaves are ashes. They are beautiful! I was down in Houston yesterday, saw a Bradford pear in full bloom! My River Birch is loaded with buds, and a handfull of them have unfolded to actual leaves.

This is very encouraging, but I read in "Texas Gardener" that they expect March and April in most of the state to have below normal temps, and above normal precip.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Don't read magazines that say stuff like that, Maggie!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah, made me want to just chuck the ol' thing. I think I'll just ignore that part.
:-)

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Thats what I'd do. ;-)
