By the way ladies, I was at Costco in Langford yesterday, and they have piles of spring bulbs in. I was very happy to find Elephant Ear bulbs. 3 large bulbs for 12.89. Sure hope I can grow them. Also a large bag of glad bulbs for the same price. Now to find a place for them. If any of you have grown elephant ears, have you ever grown them in containers?? We tend to do a lot of growing in containers because fo the amount of rock, and bad, bad soil in our yard.

Spring Flowers
Well, I 'll be darned! I had never heard or seen Skunk Cabbage before. The things you learn on Dave's. Thanks Glenda. I'll have to check our stores around here to see if they have any Spring bulbs in yet. I am having the same problem you are, and that is wanting and getting more plants and flowers than I have room for. sigh...
Glenda, I was there yesterday too! I missed the EE bulbs though, darn, I didn't see them, but I wasn't looking for them either. I almost got a box of 'red hot pokers' but like you, where would I put them, so they stayed where they were.
Glenda
I grow elephant ears and now is the time to start them.
I just put them in pots and watch them grow,
plant the bulb pointed side up, do not plant it too deep, leave the crown showing.
just water well and keep moist. and in a week or 2 you should see new growth,
as they get bigger you can repot them in a larger pot for outdoors and keep in the shade,
I grow mine besides my pond in summer time.
Wilma
Thanks Wilma. I was pretty sure I had seen some in pots at Butchart Gardens, but just wasn't sure what to do with them. I will get them started soon. I am sure looking forward to these growing, mainly because I want to use the leaves to cast cement leaves. I have seen some beautiful pictures of them, and hope I can manage to do that!!

Last summer I did some leaf casting, with the elephant ears, they turned out great,, you can also use large hosta leaves. and I also used another plant can't remember the name right now but it will come to me, it is right by my pond( great pond ) plant,
If I find my pictures I will post later today,,
Wilma, I have done hosta leaves, maple leaves, hydrangea leaves, brugmansia, and datura leaves. Also, last fall, I did 2 humongous gunnera leaves, and a smaller gunnera. I left them out all winter in the rain, hoping the leaves would rot off, as I couldnt' get them to come off. But they haven't done that, so I am thinking of taking a pressure washer to them. They turned out great, although a few leaks around the edge that I will take care of with the dremel tool. I will try to find my pictures too, although I haven't taken any of the gunnera yet.
another leaf I used was Ligularia, made it into a birdbath shape,

Sidney
did you try a wire brush to brush off the leaves, they will rot away in time..
wow can't wait to see your leaves.
Wilma
No., I havent' attempted anything to get the old leaf off yet. I thought about a wire brush, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Too many other projects!!! I am in the middle of scrapbooking fest, to do a book for my mother-in-law's 90th birthday. Lots of work, but fun.
I will have to dig out a wire brush and see how it goes!

I don't have a membership at Costco. I don't suppose anyone would be willing to buy a package of Elephant Ears and maybe I could split it with a couple of other people at the RU that might like one. I don't think I would have room to grow more than one plant.
Sandy
Sandy, if you only want one, I will give you one of mine that I bought. I certainly dont' need to have three. I can leave it with Linda for the roundup since I won't be there. Would you like me to pot it up for you so it can get going???
Glenda
Thank you, that would be great Glenda, as long as you wouldn't mind and you're sure you don't want all three. Why don't you look at my list of things to trade and pick something that I could bring and leave with Linda for you.
Sandy
Sandy, do you have any of the passiflora cuttings left??
ggd
Yes, I've got lots Glenda. How many do you want?
Sandy
Well, I guess two, just in case one dies????? LOL
I will be potting up the elephant ear this weekend.
I guess I shoudl really ask Linda if it's okay to dump a couple of things at her house before we leave on our holiday, and before the roundup??
Glenda
Go ahead an dump Glenda, you're not hte first, or probably the last. I get to enjoy the plants a little bit before the rightful owners come & get them. No worries,
Thanks LInda. Good to know you will babysit for us!!! You, Heather and I should try and have coffee sometime before the end of March????
ggd
Getting together sounds good, Glenda - you and Linda can tell me if I have anything worth trading !
Heather
Okay Glenda, I'll bring you 2 and leave them with Linda.
Gee Linda, you could charge a holding fee of a plant each and score yourself some plants. LOL
LOL, maybe I should charge a commission, what'd ya say about a can of coke for each plant, or maybe a neck rub? Chocolate is always good, I'm easily bribed. LOL
Gee, you mean you can't use any more plants?
LOL, I don't where I'd put them. I'm limited in how many plants i have by 3 things,
1- we rent so don't want to put a lot in the owners yard and then have to dig it all up
2- my health
3-the sunny part of the yard is crammed already.
I did go to Costco today, and they are out of EE's.
I think the only think I'd like to try is an iochroma.
Will you settle for chocolate from me????
: > )

I just looked that up Linda. It looks pretty cool so I can see why you'd want to try it. Uh oh, another one for the list.
