Kell, you take the most amazing pictures. They really brighten an otherwise dreary day. What would this forum do without you?
Harbingers of Spring!
Beautiful, Kell. Thank you for sharing. I have never seen a camelia that full of blooms!
I must admit Trunnels, that I have several large camellia bushes, almost trees, but mine are never so full of blooms. And it always seems to rain and ruin mine! In fact I was looking at them yesterday, and though they are over 40 years old, I was thinking of pulling them out.
Oh thanks so much Clare. You pictures are pretty great too!
Here is a camellia I have had for a few years. I just love it even when not in flower. I love the pot, it is very tall! A green ice cream cone! Sometimes with huge cherries on top!
Kell,
It was so nice to see flowers down in California last week. There were trumpet looking vines blooming in yellows and reds, snapdragons, geraniums, petunias, etc....... I just love Spring!
I have some bulbs coming up already - TOO early! I sure hope this false spring doesn't turn into a disaster.
Karrie
I thought that was a Tulip Tree. I guess the Flowering Magnolia does resemble it. I guess I cannot tell the difference...
Very pretty Clare.
Kell, I hear that fragrant camellias are being cultivated!
Sherry, I think Tulip Tree is a common name for Magnolia x soulangeana. Here's a link: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2452/index.html
That's really funny Clare because, last year, my brother gave my daughter what is called here a 'flowering magnolia' and my aunt gave her a 'tulip tree'. I just emailed all three to tell them that both trees are the same! I told them at the time that i could not tell the difference - I just love being right, lol!!!
LOL You go girl!
LOL, Sherry. That is funny! Well, she'll have two lovely identical trees then. Maybe she can flank her doorway with them:-)
Thanks!!!! They didn't believe me, that the trees were the same, one much smaller than the other and they were tagged differently, so she put one in the front yard and the other in the back...LOL, I cannot wait until they bloom!! I do love the trees, I just wish they flowered longer - in Arky, they are here one day, and very beautiful, and, so it seems, gone the next day...of course it always seems to be breezy that time of the year so the blossoms are quickly 'gone with the wind'...
Clare, you always have awesome pictures. Beautiful.
Well Sherry, you should know for sure in a few weeks! I will say, there is a tulip tree that is different. I had one growing up in my yard. But the leaves were much different so I am sure it is not one like your daughter received.
I do not think I will move to Arkansas after all, LOL! Your flowers do not last long enough for me!
Clare, I had one of those evergreen magnolias in my yard. It got huge and was such a pretty tree! But it dropped so many leaves over my flower garden all year long. It was too hard to keep it neat and then its roots were everywhere! I wish I had a much bigger yard!
Hi! Mind if I drop in? These photos are beauties. The second one is Hardenbergia - I believe that the first one isn't. Could the first one be shell flower? There are Magnolias that grow in several sizes from 7 feet or so to 30 or 40 feet depending on the cultivar. Magnolias come in yellow, dark pink, doubles, and white with red centers. Those evergreen Magnolias lovely thing is the scent of those big flowers. This is Magnolia "Galaxy" blooming right now.
For a few different Magnolias see the Wayside Garden link at:

Perhaps not the best place to buy - see the garden watchdog, I haven't checked - but they do have some pretty pictures.

Hi Doss!
Actually the first one is a close up of the bigger Hardenbergia. I have never heard of a shell flower, I will have to go look it up. It must be very pretty!
I had no idea there were so many varities of magnolias. Thanks for the link. Have you ever visited Filoli? They have incredible magnolias and all their wisteria is so magnificent and so huge! Worth lots of visits!

I have a Magnolia tree in my yard, it is always green, even in winter, but it has never bloomed, I know it is over ten years old because that is how long I have been here, and it was already here, is there something I am supposed to do to get it to bloom.
Doris
Thanks, Shirley. Your pictures are awesome too, especially of those double pink brugs!
Kell, I know exactly what you mean about leaf drop. It is constant, and the leaves don't decompose, but they just lie there for ages. And then the seeds and seedpods drop too. Fortunately, they drop over an area which is not conspicuous. But that lemon scent is a winner. Thanks for the Filoli link. I've never been to the Descanso Gardens, which is not too far from me, but I hear that they too have a nice wisteria and magnolia collection. Here's a link: http://www.descansogardens.org/index.cfm
Doris, I don't know what you can do to get it to bloom. Did you try some fertilizer for acid-loving plants? I think Miracle Grow makes Miracid that you might try. You could also try Bloombooster, which is a fertilizer with a high middle number.
Wow, those are all beautiful. We are not far behind you. The camelias have bloomed and the daffodils are blooming now.
I haven't seen Hardenbergia flowers that big before. Beautiful. And they flower at such a lovely time of year. You have taken such great photos.
This is bearded Iris "Harvest of Memories". It has bloomed off and on here all winter and this picture was taken February 15.
I have been to Filoli many times and I do love it. The flowers in the house are very beautiful too. Do you live close to it?
I'm in zone 8a and I've never known an iris to bloom in the winter, how wonderful that is and it's very pretty!!
Part of it is this hardy cultivar, part of it is our long growing season and mild temperatures. There a large number of reblooming cultivars. Sutton's Iris Garden has a list by reliability of bloom and minimum zone for rebloom. Their site is closed for shopping but the list is still up. The site should be open by the beginning of April.
If you are interested in sites that are already open they will have reblooming sections. Just let me know.

Is it OK to get you shopping for Iris on the Brug forum? :-) Just what you needed, right?
Everything goes on the brug forum Doss, as long as we are having a good time! LOL Your iris is so pretty!
Good to see you here Loretta. I was missing your posts!
Thanks for the links Clare and Doss. I will go exploring when I am more comfortable sitting! My back is acting up!
Sorry Doris, I do not have a clue. Mine just flowered on its own. Maybe yours has too much nitogen available?
