Just a guess, but I'll bet that sometimes when I've thought I had cyclamen or broad mites, I actually had a calcium defeciency. I would always feed and spray. LOL! Nothing like coming at the plants from every direction.
What's the best fertilzer for brugs?
Is epsom salts a calcium.............I know you can spray Pepper blossoms with it and will set the fruit, helps to produce more peppers. Just wonder if it would help the brugs?
Dee
Dee, that's what the Garden Supply guy told me to do when I asked hime about calicum was to use Epson salts
Hummm, so now I wonder if you would spray it on them or pour it around the base? Guess I will have to try it on a couple and see what happens. I have a couple of smaller brugs I could try it on and it would be no great loss if the didn't make it.
I will let yall know if the fall dead..........LOL
Dee
I've never put any on the plant just watered it in the soil.
the best fertilizer for any plant is what works best for plants in ur area [considering the atmospheric and soil condition]. in my experience alfalfa pellets, epsom salt works wonders for all my plants. not only they are organic, they are also cheap!!!

My order from AMLeonard arrived today. That's pretty fast. Evidently UPS did not get today as a holiday. LOL!
Shirley, the first fert you mentioned did not say anything about macros and micro nutrients, etc.
The 2nd fert, the AMLeonard fert said: Water soluble 15-5-15 fertilizer with macro and micro nutrients. Over 80% nitrate nitrogen with macro and micronutrients. It can be tank-mixed with 21-5-20.
Does this mean that the first fert does not have the goodies or that they just didn't mention it?? Also why would you want to mix it with 21-5-20??? Or is that for commercial growers??
That would be for commercial growers, Sherry. The first place had the CalMag and it has the minors in it too. There site just doesn't give as much information. Just a wild guess, but I imagine they are both the same thing. I didn't even open the box when it came today and I'm not sure I have an old bag of CalMag to compare it to anyway. You won't go wrong with either kind, but AMLeonard certainly ships fast and cheap. This came on the first email. I never received another email except the one telling me it had been shipped and then one for tracking. So, I guess postage stands. Just a guess, but I'd say the two boxes weighed a total of about 40 pounds.
Sub Total $85.98

Would now be a good time to start fertilizing my cuttings that rooted? They are up in the sun room getting plenty of light.
Thanks Shirley!! Speaking of fert, I have a cutting in my GH that was started Dec 15 and it is full of buds and has been for two weeks. I guess that isn't unusual, but it's never had a drop of fert and very little sun. No complaints, I assure you, but isn't it odd that we have to feed so much in the growing season?? I know Monika says they need Jan/Feb to recoup, so maybe this one will be 'down' during the summer, I dunno...
I've just now started fertilizing with a good amount of fertilizer. Start them out with half strength Karrie and work up to full strength.
Thanks!
You're welcome Karrie. I'll be looking forward to seeing lots of blooms from you this summer.
I certainly hope so!
BTW - approx how long should it take for my Datura seeds to germinate? It's been about 2 weeks and nothing.
I've had them come up in a week and I've had them take a month or more. Don't give up on them. They always surprise you when you least expect it.
kewl - I didn't nick them, just soaked them about 3 days.
Terry, it could be. I have several, that shoot leaves like the one in the middle of the topshoot of your EP. They are shorter than normal and also broader. Other leaves, that curl underwards seems to be longer and slimmer, than normal. Does that make any sense? I also found out, that ExP (EP x) had magnesium def. ... that looked a lot like potashium def. but instead of the edge withering, it withers inbetween the leaf ribbs. Probably the soil mix is essential, so I will repot in the spring to a new mix, that are not solely peat based. I even consider growing them in a homemade mix of garden soil and composted matter with a bit clay grannule added ... the garden soil here are a bit tight corned, but hope that the roots can breathe through that :)
The Teufel nursery called me today and said that their shipping costs are not being reflected correctly on the site. It would cost over $18 to ship the fertilizer, so I asked them to cancel. If anyone else ordered from them, be ready to either pay high prices or get a call from them explaining that that part of their site isn't reflecting the correct cost. I'm sorry about that too, because I wanted to order again, but those kinds of shipping costs scare me away. Just thought you should know.
Thanks, Shirley, for the heads up! That stinks.
That reminds me of the trip we just took. We were able to go ticketless for most of the trip through Expedia - but to get home they had to ship us our tickets. They charged us $20 to send them! Can you believe that! CRAZY! (bet it cost them 5.00 - it was sent 2 day air).
They called me too, Brugie. I went ahead and took it because I've been looking for it for so long. I have a place in Little Rock attempting to get some too and if they do, I'll be able to pick it up there and save all shipping...BTW, the reason I'm willing to pay the postage is because I was charged $33, plus tax last year (no shipping) for Peters 20-20-20, I really don't like being ripped off and I moved my business...
Gosh, that was a rip off. I'm sorry they had to do that with the postage at Teufel's. I was hoping it would be a great place to get fertilizer. I may have to write them and tell them that we can get the same stuff minus the name at another site with much cheaper postage. It probably wouldn't change a thing. LOL!
Hmmmmmmm. All of the fert numbers seem really high in the Nitrogen for bloom growth... I wonder why? I would think that a MagAmp fert...around 7-50-7 would work the best. curious. Will have to experiment. Generally I use a 7-15-5 with lots of seaweed stuff for all my ornamentals...and chicken manure. I douse lightly with calcium nitrate once a year for absorbsion.... Am going to try the AP.
thanks everyone,
Carol

APPLOGIZED FOR ANY INCONVIENCE THAT WE CAUSE PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT ME TO PROCEED WITH THE ORDER.THANKS
Wowzer!!! That's as much as the bag of Cal/Mag.
There are restrictions on shipping some fertilizers. But if AMLeonard can ship fertilizer with those same restrictions for less than $7, I don't understand why other companies have to be so expensive. Looks to me like they are trying to make money on their shipping costs.
I agree Brugie. Plus, I suppose it's a PITA to wrap fert for shipping. I'm the most irked at WalMart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc, and other local outlets that could offer a better variety but 'just don't. I'll bet you there are a bazillion 15-30-15 ferts, in every size, type in the world. Lowe's is slightly better this year than last...they are carrying 20-20-20...
My 25 lb. bag came in a box from AMLeo. It came UPS because it has to be trucked. The discount places will only sell something they can make good money on. I've seen them sell Peters before, just small containers, but never big bags or never CalMag. Maybe one day they will find out they can make some $$ by selling it and still help us get it cheaper too.
Terry, it apparantly was calcium deficiency. There is a lot of new root growth, where wasn' t any 2 weeks ago. Yeah, I decided to repot all 70 trees today as I was not sure the old dirt is worth to restore. Better safe, than sorry ... it turned out, that also sand and and garden soil had also mixed into the peat and packed it tightly to the roots here and there. Still 13pots left to do LOL However, root systems is now active again. I noted that at repotting. With the new potting soil they should be starting to put out regular growth again soon. It is amazing, how an addition of Ca. can boost root activity and also make them take up nutrients again.
Great Tonny. I'm glad that it was calcium deficiency as it is easy to correct. The already curled leaves will not change but the new growth should be normal.
Sounds like you've been busy repotting all those Brugs. That's a lot of work.
Oh dear, I must do the same in another month or so Tonny. Will be time to get out my root saws and go to work. After April things will settle down and it will be time to enjoy the flowers!!!
Great information here, thanks for all who contributed :) I went and picked up some and hope to see a real difference this year.
Julie
Wonder what the shipping would be to Ireland? ;-D
I don't think you even want to inquire. LOL!
Ugghh... see I think my Brugs must be hypochondriacs (or how ever you spell it), I am starting to get the leaf curl on some of mine, only a few days after reading this string!!
Time for mag/cal I guess!
Guppy
WOW...you guys are right on the money. I think my curled leaves are just that...Calcium deficiency. Epsom Salt and Gypsum it IS!!!
Gotta find some cal/mag. We were told that it is best used together because, just like humans, they help eachother be absorbed....
Toodles...
I found my supplies today at walmart (Florida has palms everywhere, they keep it stocked here)... same stuff ya get for palm trees, just gotta get a bag of this and a bag of that.. Well I should be good to go now!
Guppy
