First Morning Glory of the Year

Goodlettsville, TN(Zone 6a)

This little guy is from an American Seed package labeled "Dwarf Early Call".

He was NOT soaked overnight before being sown in the pellet in the bottom-heated mini greenhouse.

29-JAN-2005 - sown
01-FEB-2005 - cotyledon appeared
05-FEB-2005 - transferred to peat pot.
13-FEB-2005 - Photo taken.

I probably should have soaked these seeds. Only one has come up of about 12 seeds planted.

Yes, it is a little early to be starting MGs in my zone. But my intent with these is to keep them in a hanging pot. I can keep them indoors under a lamp as long as I need to.

I planted another batch this morning--and this time I will soak the seeds overnight first.

Looks great, Kevin. It sure has grown fast.

Kevin, I have been growing MG's for a little while and I don't always soak my seed. So far I really can't tell a difference in germinating. So I don't think it make that much of a difference with the Morning Glory seed. I know all you talk to will tell you to soak and to nick the seed coat but I don't do either.

I have a Merremia tuberosa seed that's breaking speed records for germination for me. I soaked it the night of Feb.10/day of Feb. 11, sowed it the same day, then last night when I checked it (Feb. 12), it only had a tiny root bud showing. Here it is 24 hrs. later, the root is already 1 in. long! I've had it in a little seed incubator I made at around 96°F. I think I may start some of my others like this if they don't sprout in the unheated pots outside.
