volunteer rolling blackout is TODAY!! don't forget

Olympia, WA

ROLL YOUR OWN BLACKOUT ON JUNE 21
From 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM in everyone's own time zone on June 21st, the first day of summer, many folks worldwide are planning to turn off as much electrical power as possible.  The black-out will thus roll around the planet in a gesture of environmental harmony. Think of it as a "global wave." The blackout is being organized as an alternative to George W. Bush's energy policies and lack of emphasis on efficiency, conservation and alternative fuels.

It's a simple protest and a symbolic act. Turn out your lights from 7pm-10pm on June 21. Unplug whatever you can unplug in your house. Light a candle, kiss and tell or not, take a stroll in the dark, invent ghost stories, anything that's not electronic - have fun in the dark.

Quynh, good idea, but, it doesn't get dark here until around 11 O'clock, and is bright again by 4.!

Ack! I forgot! Time to sign off NOW - better late than never! Thanks for the reminder.

Quynh, THANKS! for the reminder... I read your post @ 7:20, and immediately shut everything down until after 10 PM. What a lovely (and different) evening it was!

EASY TO COMPLY IT IS STILL LIGHT OUT AND 2YR OLD ASLEEP (NO ENTERTAINMENT) MOMS WORKING AND I AM SIGNING OFF.

Austin, TX(Zone 8a)

Definately easy to comply for me - I always celebrate the solstice outside and it's a family tradition to light a fire when the last bit of daylight is fading. My days of jumping over the fire and staying up all night are long past, but I still have a mini-bonfire in my fire ring every year, even if I do live in the city. Someday, I hope to move to the country where I can have a real bonfire - and a BIG garden :)

Oh, AnnMarie, what a beautiful tradition!
The thing I miss most about the country is looking at the stars. They go into hiding in the city.

(Zone 4b)

Too much light pollution in the city is why you can't see the stars.

Sorry, I didn't participate in the rolling blackouts...I was in class at the time, and I don't know if my professor would have appreciated me getting up and turning off the lights and his overhead projector in the middle of lecture...HAHA.

Is it too late to participate tonight?

I was not able to do anything for the voluntary black out either...I was working at the weighstation for the power plant and we had to keep things going so those who didn't participate could still have lights on!
