Japanese Red and Brazilian Moonvine

Wichita, KS

What are Japanese Red Moonvine and Brazilian Moonvine?
Any pictures available or other names for the same vines.?

Thank you :-)

The only one I know of that may be called a 'Brazilian' anything would be Ipomoea setosa, but I don't know for sure if it opens in the evening. Two others, Ipomoea macrorhiza and Ipomoea turbinata, open in the evening and are often mentioned in the forums.

Yardbird-
Do you know the botanical names for your vines?

I'm guessing the first one is purga(jalapa), turbinata, or muricata.
The second one I am not familiar with, but sure looks thorny!

Do either one of them bloom strictly at night, or are they like regular mgs, and just bloom when overcast, or early morning and early evening?
thanks

the red japanese moonflower blooms at night just like the white moonflower. now the macrorhiza is supposed to be pinkish and also blooms at night but this i cant verify. but i know for sure the red japanese one does bloom at night and its so pretty mixed with the white ones.

i have never seen the brazilian one so thats new to me. that looks pokey!!!!

there are so many names for these flowers i get confused.

Oooh, I like the look of the Japanese Red & Brazilian. Someone special gave me some seeds to try.

Well, I found the botanical for the brazilian mg. It is Ipomoea setosa.
I still think the other may be Ipomoea muricata, but that is just a guess.

The Japanese Moon vine blooms at night and the Brizilian Morning Glory blooms in the morning. The Brizilian Morning Glory isn't thorny, the red things on the steams are soft.

I've grown I. macrorhiza, and it does bloom at night.

I like the look of I. setosa's leaves...they remind me of grape leaves.

I ordered a lot of different morning glory varieties from JLhudson seeds. I can't wait to try them. One of the seed types is bright orange. You ought to have a look over there and then put the names in google and look at the images.
I hope to be able to get seeds from them all and share them this fall.
I just have to work at germinating and keeping them happy.
