I think my "new thing" this year is going to be bananas. Pup prices are pretty high, so i'm thinking seeds might be the way to go?
I've been looking online and found a few places, but if anyone would care to share their best source for seeds, or cheaper pups, that would be great,
Thanks
Jen

Jen, I have lots of the plain old kind, if you are interested. They will begin to come back soon and will have lots of babies. They are not the spectacular kind, but they are green and grow big. Also, I should have a pup of the Chinese Yellow one this spring if you want it.
Roz,
Thanks!!! Do they fruit? If not i have some that DonnaB gave me that i think she said came from her G'mas. If i remember correctly she said they throw plenty of the mini's. All of them look great!!! I'll give you a call
2pugs, i didnt even think to check ebay, lol....off to search there now.
Jen
We went on a cruise this past fall and during one of the ports-of-call we stopped at a banana plantation. We were given some little 4 inch bananas to sample. They were delicious. Couldn't get the name of the variety. The skin of the banana was yellow not the reddish color found in the fingerling bananas found in stores. Does anyone know the names of any small fruited edible bananas?
I'm in marginal banana growing country in Zone 8b so I need plants short enough to cover during hard freezes.
BettyDee
BettyDee I found one just like this that I am bidding on and it says it is good to zone 7. Take a look at it. They are seeds.
The only thing I ask is if you should decide to go for one please don't bid against LittleMissHolly, because that's me.

2pugdogs, I won't bid against you. I'm looking for edible bananas. I've been reluctant to by seed or plants from outside the US since there are plant restrictions and I'm not familiar with all the restrictions. Have you had any problems with importing seeds?
Good luck with your bidding.
BettyDee
Bettydee: I have never bought any seeds from outside the USA. To tell you the truth I didn't even give it a thought. I must have had my head somewhere that it doesn't belong. I think I will send them a e-mail and see what they say. I will keep you informed on whether or not I get them.
Linda
jen,i have several different kinds of edible types,if they are up when we do our trade ill work some of them in for you also.i have like "ice cream",1000 fingers, monkey fingers, nino, gold finger, off the top of my head. i have to wait for some of them to wake back up and get the babies for you.i do think i have a "ice cream" in the green house though,so dont go spend alot of money on them when i have several types and will be glad to share with you.....ok then talk to you later.
Have you stopped by your local nursery? They sell many varieties of bananas in my local nurseries and I live in the same zone as you...
lilcajun,
that sounds fantastic. i need to go check the trade list and start getting stuff set aside and growing.
spring is coming soon, eh?
dogzilla, the best one we have is lowes and unfortunately they never seem to have a supply of them.
lilcajunlady,
you and grayse should come over for the swap!!!!
janetos maybe ill see if she wants to go to the next one you guys have.
Janet, when is the swap? I promised a yellow nana to the gal that was at New Orleans last year - the little blond haired girl, to give to her son, but I did not get her email and she does not have mine. Sure would like to get it to her.
Hey Roz,
Gennie found her yellow nana!! It is so sweet of you to want to get one to her!!! I was talking about the Florala swap. Are you coming??? I guess I should've been more specific. LOL!!!
Good to hear from you again.
Janet

2pugdogs ..... I picked up a banana at the Earl May's in Lawrence about a month ago...... Do you ever get over this direction ..... ?
Cinnabor I will see if I can find anymore pups. if i can getsome one to did them I will bring some. Mine make the small yellows like BettyDee was talking about. They are really good, mulitply like crazy, and very hardy.. Sure wish someone could come up with the name for them. Right MS Jen they came from my Grandmothers and I beleive they came from Metarie with my Great Grandmother when they bought the home in BaySt Louis
Thank you so much .If you can't thank you anyway...I have purchased some seeds but I'm not good with seeds and they need over 80 degrees to germanate. But, I'm going to try. cinnabor
There is a nursery north of Crestview that we went to last year after the Florala roundup. I think it was called GreenLeaf Nursery. Anyhow, I bought a nice sized Chinese Yellow Wax for about 8 bucks. They also had some others and the prices were quite good for the size.
rylaff,
was it on the left or the right of the main road? We stopped at both, the one on the right was more like a co-op/hardware store that stunk to high heavens, but they had some pretty abutilons.
the one of the left was well stocked and clean, but the girl that was running it didnt have a clue. her parents were gone and she was "just a college kid helping them out". most of the stuff wasnt marked, so it was a guess as to how much it was.
is the chinese yellow wax the same, or different than the chinese yellow?
gonna have to check them out,
thanks
jen
yes, it was the one with the teenage girls. The chinese Wax (same thing) was marked and I bought the smaller ones. i kept meaning to go back there but never did.
There was also a place in Pensacola that Hugo and I went to that I definately want to go back to. It is called Olive Road Nursery. They had a nice selection of bananas , gingers, elephants ears, etc. Hugo got a small Mickey mouse elephant ear for 5 bucks or less. There were several huts filled with philos and such. Definately some more unusual stuff. Now that I know a little more about some of the rarer philos and such, I need to go back.
Janet and I are heading over on Friday because of a plant sale that is going to be at the milton campus (univ. of florida?). that leaves us pretty much the whole day to scour and scrounge for plants : )
Since you will be so close to Pensacola, I would definately head that way.
Hey don't for get Trish and I. I am going over on Friday too. Hmmm may have to go over Thursday evening lol. Then in late April we need to hit Davis Nursery just past Loxley. They have great prices to and you just put your plants in a pile, they call them in to the lady at the register and all you do is go pay while they load you up
Sounds like a road trip again!!!!
I am SO looking forward to it. The sale at the Univ. of Fl. in Milton sounds great. They told us that they would have plants for sale that were new and hadn't been released yet.We could get some way cool, brand new introductions!!!
Janet,
Did you get my email?
Yes, Oops!! Sorry, busy today, had a meeting with the Orchid Society.
Responding now...............
Have to do it when we can drag Larry with us. How is he anyway?? Haven't heard a word from him. Wonder if my e-mail went into cyberspace lol
Just got back from the Natiaonal Cheerleading competition with my granddaughter in Orlando. so I am just now getting back. When is the plant thing in Florida? And where?
Roz it is April 2nd in Florala. Same place as always. Check the Round Up threads
Thanks, will do.
Roz,
Glad to see youre thinking about coming!
Jen
I you ever think of getting plants , some of the best prices here
http://www.banana-tree.com/catalog~category~17.cfm
http://ssl.securesites.com/cart.pl?db=stuff.txt&method=phrase&search=Musa&merchant=bigdipperfarm
Thanks, Scooterbug, both of those sites are really good. Lots of information too, as well as good prices.
MS Jen, I am going to try to make it, but not sure if we will be in town that week end. Billy is chomping at the bit to go to Flint Creek.
Whaaahh,............. wish I could go. Kinda hard to find 'naner pups being traded at the Iowa RU
Hope all y'all have a ball.
Scooterbug - Maybe someone could get you some pups at one of the nurseries and send them to you, if you begged???? I'm not going or I would.
Judy
There were bananas and ears a couple of years ago, at the Iowa Roundup. I don't remember seeing any nanas last year. Shirley, I bought seed from Banana Tree and started half of them. I got one plant. Most didn't germinate. It has been months. I guess one is still a better deal than buying a plant. LOL!
Roz,
Sure hope you can make it, but flint creek is a fun place to be also ; )
Just keep me posted? Let me know if you need any help pulling stuff out of the greenhouse and stuff, too
