I was wondering if it would be possible to fit a bookstore into the agenda. I've been looking for a book on Passionflowers and can't find one here. They don't even have one available through the library. There's an excellent bookstore called Munro's down town....not far from Chinatown. I noticed on another thread, good book stores were mentioned, so maybe others would be interested. They have a fairly extensive gardening section. ;-)

This is probably one of the best books on Passiflora........you can ILLO it in at your local library (I think Vancouver Public has a copy) or you could order it from one of the below sites if the bookstore you mentioned doesn't have it.

Munro's books in Victoria is good. You will also find lots of books in Sidney, just between the ferries and Butchart's Gardens. Sidney has been doing a revitalization progect for 5-10 years now and have many bookstores. That's one of their draws now is bookstores. I'll try to get a link to some of them.
Linda
Here's a link to the book stores in Sidney. Now be aware, if you want to go to all of them, it'll take a day or 2!

Thanks for that link, Linda. I'd heard that Sidney was becoming quite a book haven, but hadn't found any other info until now.
Thanks Pam. The Campbell River library is a branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library and I was surprised to find that they don't have any Passiflora books. I don't know if they do interlibrary loans. (I think that's what it's called) I'll check into it. I've never ordered anything online. I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to that.
Linda, that's interesting, I didn't know that Sidney had become a book mecca either. I've never spent much time up there.
I'm pretty positive that your branch will ILLO (interlibrary loan).
Interlibrary Loan
* VIRL members can borrow items for free from other library systems if those items are unavailable within VIRL's collection. Please note: Books published in the last 12 months are not available through Interlibrary Loan. See below for a list of materials not available.
o Search the VIRL online catalogue. If you can't find what you want ...
o Check the OutLook catalogue to see if the item is available in another BC Library system.
o Request the item using our Interlibrary Loan Form.

Sandy, I know we've gotten library books sent to the Victoria Library from Vancouver, and I think Kelowna too. Theyu've been really good about it, but it takes a bit of time.
When it's warm and sunny, the main street of Sidney is almost as busy as the tourist part of Victoria. Lots to do and see, and the pace is much slower in Sidney, lots of little shops to meander through. We'll often take a full day to wander, stop for lunch or get a sub or something and walk to the beach and have lunch on the shore. It's like a little break from the world....
Linda
Gee, what service. Thanks you guys, I will definitely try to get that book by Vanderplank.
Sounds nice Linda.
Book stores. Hmm... Sidney hmm... Fort Street hmm... Kathy from ABE has just opened a shop I think/hope on Fort. Books are def. towards the top of my agenda. Mybe Sandy and Ginny can go book hunting while some people are having tea/lunch whatever at the Empress. I order books from Munro's quite often. They have a 1-800 number and are so obliging. And they know their books.
Go to http://www.abe.com
Put passion flowers and passion fruit into search. You will find one in California for $20US
Ginny
I'd go along on a book-shopping excursion too. Now that I think of it, nice as the Empress is, I think I'd rather spend $40 on books than on tea. :-) Time to check out Air Canada's extra luggage policy, methinks.
47 days, Ladies!! Woo Hoo!!
Holy Smokes! How did that happen? I'm still wondering where January went.
only 14 til we leave for Cayman!!!
You're killing me!! You better take your digital and take lots n lots of pictures! ;)
Oh, the Caymans, I wish I had spent more than a day there. They were absolutely beautiful, and I'd go back in an instant. Have a wonderful trip, relax, soak up the sun, and take lots of photos so we can enjoy the trip vicariously through you!
I agree....lots of pictures please. I'd love to go there. I guess the closest I'll ever get is the big shell I have that the lady across the street brought back for me when I was about 7 years old. So...enjoy yourself.
i will - it will be fun to watch the great nieces playing in the ocean. the four year can't get over that she is going to a place that NEVER has winter
Lynn be sure to capture the look of wonderment that that little one will have in her eyes! :) Hope you have a marvelous trip and don't let them scan your camera!
You can't put digital cameras through the scanner,??? I thought it was only film that could be ruined by scanners.
Suppose the way around that is to take your picture card out and put it in your pocket till safely on the plane. Oh and you have to change somewhere in USofA, don't you?
Advice please from somebody who has travelled with digital cameras.s
Haven't been anywhere hot/beach for ages. Too many grandchildren -in Canada- to visit these days.
Inanda
Getting lots of vicarious enjoyment from all you gals!
Re books and digitals...
I always hand carried my digital but in L.A. they insisted on X-raying it so I took the card out. Nasty customs people in L.A., filthy airport, ugh. Had to go thru customs with our shoes off!
I get my books through the mail, librarian's choice plus some requests. The last batch included a book by Phyllis Whitney that was set in Victoria, so of course I read it (it's a very light mystery). If anyone wants to know more about Victoria, Butchart's Gardens, etc. this covered it beautifully! And was surprisingly accurate. One of the climaxes was set in Butchart's. She even touches on a bit of history, like the designer of the Empress and the Parliament Buildings. The book is called *Feather on the Moon*, 1988.

Yumiko, your place should be with your grandfather. So sorry to hear he is sick. Best wishes are sent to you and the family.
We will be here no matter what. If you aren't joining us in person, we will have you in our thoughts. You live close enough to many of us, we can still have a mini get together when you are able to attend.
Linda
Yumiko, There is a reply to your e-mail in your box.
Best Wishes, Ingrid

Hi everyone,
I have good news and frustrating news. The good news is, I just got a new job as the Canadian Forces Museums Administration Officer, where I'll be working with CF museum staff all across the country. The frustrating news is, they want me to start April 1st, and be there that whole first week of April. So: I can't come to the RU. :-( What I have had to do with my plane ticket is move the whole works one week to the right, in order to still visit all my family in Mill Bay BC, and Saskatoon. Linda, thanks again very much for the offer of a place to lay my head during the RU. I was really looking forward to it. If you're going to be in town the 9th and/or 14th of April (my arrival/departure days from the island), I'd love to meet you and Cheryl for coffee or something.
signing off somewhat disgruntled....
Shannon
Shannon, congratulations on the new job.
Well That's disappointing that you won't be here, for the RU. We will be around those days, please, come by. Maybe there will be plants with your name on them from the RU still here.
That really is frustrating that you can't be here for the RU.
Linda
Oh RATS. Ingrid. Congrats on your new - sounds very exciting - job. A new job is always rather scary. People think you are going to make great changes etc etc, wondering what you are like.
Hope your new office will have sunny windows for plants.
Good luck .... Keep us posted.
Inanda
Thanks, Linda and Ginny. I'm thrilled about the job (and a little nervous), but vexed about the RU. I still have some stuff for trade, and in fact am getting many more vegetable seeds than I'll need, from Vesey's - cucumbers, spinach, oregano, dill, bell peppers...I forget what else right now. Oh, and some ornamental grass seed, Angel Hair I think it's called. So I can certainly mail some stuff to Linda or directly to whomever would like them. I'll update my trade list later on this week.
Sunny windows would be great - not that it's sunny very often here. In fact, we are right now in the midst of a snowstorm - they say 20 cm by the time it's done.
Shannon
Congratulations on your exciting new position Shannon! We're sure sorry we won't be meeting you but what a wonderful career move!! Ü
Keep the snow there!
spklatt
Shannon, well congradulations to your new job!!
It's unfortunate, that we we'll miss you at RU..But there will be more opportunities to come together -I'am sure...
Well, now I'am walking really in the blind..Wish me well in this blind date excursion-for I really don't know anyone now..I'am sure it will be fine.........
Best Wishes,
Ingrid
