Enough is enough (snow)

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Ok, the jokes over. Will you gardeners in Alberta keep your 'clippers' to yourselves! It's hard to imagine that a week ago we had no snow on the ground in St. John's. In fact, the first 3 weeks of January were among the driest ever. All that came to an end last Saturday. Since then we have broken 4 records, 2 for snow, 2 for rain. In the past 8 days we have had:115 cm snow, 90 mm rain and 17 mm sleet. It was only 2 C with the rain so it did nothing to melt the snow, only turn it to ice. I've never seen the roads so terrible here, even in 2001 when we had over 600 cm of snow for the winter. Looks like another late spring for us (what else is new!). By the way, the fence in the back of the garden is 4 feet high.

Oh Todd, you're right, it isn't funny anymore. I can only wish that your spring was as close as ours. I hope you have a snow blower.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

No snow blower...but large arm muscles! LOL!

Definitely your turn for tea and sympathy. It looks like it all got dumped in your yard. Lot more in yours than your neighbors'. Seems like everyone is getting a turn at extreme weather this year. Take care with all that ice.

We are feeling for you Todd. Saw on the Weather Channel this morning that Gander,NFLD had non-stop snow yesterday. 24 hours of the white sh....stuff. Take heart. Today is January 30. Spring will be hear in a few short weeks, and all of this will be just a bad, but distant, memory.

Your picture tells it all Todd! ;) Seems your neck of the woods got lots of everything nasty this year....my deepest sympathy for the hurricane force winds, with bitterly cold temps, that you also had to endure. :(

That gives me sore arms and a sore back just looking at all that snow. It's a good thing you've got all those orchids so at least you can do some indoor gardening and enjoy some flowers.

Incredible photo, Todd! Of course we've all been watching your weather for the last little while...but it adds an extra level of impressiveness to see personal photos. Four feet high you say....yikes. Perhaps you need a trip to the local supermarket for something currently in bloom? :-) It won't help shovel the snow, but it's a quick 'n easy pick-me-up.

Take it easy out there. Let us know how things go.

what do you mean alberta clipper? nothing actually starts here; it just passes thru. can't you blame texas or forida or someplace LOL?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

My mom in SW Man. talks about Alberta clippers all the time...but I think it's with a grudging sense of respect! :-) I guess we could call them BC clippers....wonder how Donna would feel about that...

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I don't imagine she'd like it... We call them pinapple express's because the moist air comes from Hawaii, then it cools, and heads to Alberta, then east again and again, or else the arctic troughs, with the real cold...

Todd, in the spring, do you guys normally get flooding? I remember living in NB, and the Saint John river flooded every spring and they called it a spring freshet. It was just part of spring.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Generally we get little flooding in spring as we are too hilly. There are two major rivers in the City that can sometimes flood the backyards of houses that back onto the rivers, but it is not common.

Lilypon, we did not get the hurricane force winds with bitter cold here...that was the maritimes. The coldest we've been yet is -12 C. Our winters are actually getting warmer. Last week Halifax was -22 C...we were only -7 C!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I wondered about that after I posted....think you got enough blessings anyway! ;)

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

-12, heck that's not that bad. If a place gets -20 and lower, now that's cold! Now I am gonna have to 'fess up here and show my ignorance. I always lumped Newfoundland in with Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI as being "Maritimes". See you learn something everyday, even if you are as old as I am.

I wouldn't mind anyone calling a weather phenomenon a "BC clipper", Shannon. It would only mean it would send all you guys warm weather! :D

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

I always wondered why we are not classified as 'maritimes' as Newfoundland is the most 'maritime' of any province! We are lumped with the 'maritimes' as 'Atlantic Canada' but when people refer to the 'maritimes' Newfoundland is not part of it. The long range forecast is speaking for 3 days of 5 C next Thursday-Saturday. Maybe a 'BC Clipper' is coming our way! LOL!

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I have my fingers crossed for you , Todd.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I think it's in Will Ferguson's book that he discusses that Newfoundland isn't to be called a Maritime province but I forgot......prolly because the weather channel slips at times as well. When the hurricane force winds were moving in they moved their hand over that whole area and said "look out!". No matter what temps you got that amount of snow, ice and rain would have been too much!

Hope your forecast is accurate! BTW do you have any decidedly Newfoundland scenic pics in your collection???

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

You know I can't quite remember but I think I was taught in school that there was 4 Maritime provinces. It might have been Atlantic provinces though.
BTW Todd I was just watching the Auditors General report on the news, seems to be the beginning of a scandal occuring out your way.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

There's always some sort of scandal here...I was never a fan of Fraser March and most union and/or politicians are always lining their own pockets whenever they think they can get away with it. On the plus side, we did get the Atlantic Accord. I'm happy for the province although for the little person like me, it has no effect except for escalating real estate and increased cost of living.
