When to plant clematis tubers

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi,
I bought some clematis tubers & for the life of me cannot remember when I am supposed to plant them. And of course, nothing on the box! LOL
I am in Zone 9 & am guessing it is after last freeze, but want verification.
Thanks

Well, clematis usually have long root systems growing from the crown, so I am confused about the tuber thing! I would not plant them until the weather is reliably warm in your zone. If these are the boxed type as you mentioned, you might want to start them in gallon pots and keep them indoors in a sunny exposure until you can plant them safely outside. Clematis can suffer from clematis wilt, so when you plant them outdoors be sure to plant the crown about two inches under the soil. If they get hit with the wilt, the plant will usually still survive as long as the crown is not affected.

Hope this helps~

Hi Sandy,
thanks for the info. I was not really sure what to call them so I chose tubers since they were not a bulb, but I guess roots is what I should have said.

I already planted them. I had given up on anyone answering me so I just went out & planted them. :~(
We have had 2 weeks of sunshine & the need to play in the dirt made me impatient. LOL
Time will tell, I guess.
Thanks again,
Donna
