Yeah, just rub it in. Wanda Living in the land of frozen tundra...

Corte Madera, CA

Hi, Moby and Wanda =). I will post pictures, of course. I got them at Costco, $8.97 (something like that) for 18 bulbs (?) half Tom, half noblesse. This is my first season gardening. I hope I got a good deal.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I think you got an extremely good deal.

Hades, SC(Zone 8b)

Ooooh! Maybe our Costco will have lily bulbs soon!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

WOW! that is an awesome price! You get to plant and all we get is ice and snow - yuck! I hate gray days and I think we've not seen the sun for 3 days now.

Corte Madera, CA

yes, i do hope your costcos unload those BULBS soon!

moby, i'd offer to get you some lilies, but over here, it's already late in the season and the bags are already picked over. costco here released them early december.

kooger, i wish you sunshine and awesome weather =).

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Thanks Moonglow, but we're all frozen in out here!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I'm planting daylily seeds in pots by my window. Does that count?

Corte Madera, CA

of course, wanda! =)

Corte Madera, CA

they are all BUDDING now! i am so excited!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Good for you! Post pics when you can.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Yeah Moonglow post pics. You'll LOVE lilies!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

They are two of my favorites. For the rest of us, who don't have your temperatures, we can be assured we'll be enjoying them long after yours go to sleep. We have to take comfort wherever we can find it.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Ain't that the truth. Cold last week with highs in the 40's and then today was 89°. Sure kick starts the garden tho.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Moby - yes it does but it helped to "do in" the daffodils long before they should have gone to sleep.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I just happened to get lucky this year and the daffs came during the cool spell.

Corte Madera, CA

aren't daffs gorgeous? i have ordered them for fall planting already.

my lilies are pretty tall now. i just know it that when they become available in costco again, i'll be buying more. they must look even more beautiful planted en masse. how big are the blooms? i've googled and didn't find bloom size. thanks.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I took this pic on John Benoot's garden, and have since fallen in love with this daff ~

Moby - is that Palmares. I have it. Write to me.

Moonglow - I bought a collection of Orientals from Dutch Garden and, although I forget the cost, it is stunning. I have about 20 of the assortment in one area and adjoining it are another 25, then even a few more. Today I added 3 more Casablance, also from Dutch Gardens.

Corte Madera, CA

i don't think i have ordered from them. i will take a look at their site. i know the negative stuff about breck's at the garden watchdog, but i've had good experience ordering from them, so i have daffs from breck's coming fall 2005. the rest i ordered from bloomingbulbs. i'm so tempted to order about $50 and use the $25 coupon.

=)

That reminds me of the famous Oscar Wilde quotation:
"I can resist anything but temptation".
Enjoy! The selecting and ordering is part of the fun!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

It's the digging in the cold to plant them that is a drag...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That's when you have to force yourself to think of the photos that made you buy them and concentrate on the rewards to come. I think it's called gardening:-))
Soon enough you'll have them planted and then you get to enjoy them forever.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Planting them is fine if a nasty bunnies leave them alone and a freeze doesn't knock them to the ground like mine!

Corte Madera, CA

FOREVER? that's so wonderful to hear. i was just about to ask what to do with them after they bloom. i have them in pots but will replant next season.

sorry to hear about the bunnies.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Please do put your lilies in the garden: they'll love you for it and grow babies and expand in the area. I did lose some to a freak situation with water hitting them for 8 straight hours - more than rain - an irrigation failure. They are my only losses.

BLOOD MEAL WILL KEEP THE BUNNIES AWAY FROM THE LILIES. SPREAD IT ALL AROUND THEM AND ABOUT A FOOT AWAY SO THE BUNNIES SMELL IT AND RUN.

Sorry about the freeze - that's one I can't help you with.

Corte Madera, CA

thanks, pirl! i can't wait to plant them. i just saw a site that has photos after photos of rose and lily pairings...i'll plant them among my roses.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Moonglow - please realize that sites like this are for publishing to entice people to buy roses and lilies. If you want lilies and roses give them each a lot of room and remember the lily stalks cannot be cut to the ground when the bloom is done. The most you should cut them back by is one third. Jackson and Perkins once showed roses and babies breath planted together and my girlfriend in Florida wanted to do just that. I explained that the gypsophila has a deep tap root and so does the rose. If you lose the rose how can you dig a hole in the same spot without injuring the babies breath?

Just give each rose enough room for expansion to it's fullest requirements, then leave at least a foot, then some lilies, then another foot and then another rose, etc.

These are my thoughts and from my experience. Do what you wish.

Corte Madera, CA

oh, thanks for the reminder. but i didn't mean to plant the lilies in the "rose" space. they'll have their breathing and GROWING room of course.

=)
