Never say never

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

If you look back through the old threads, I'm sure you'll find more than one where I say "I'll just leave the pollinating to the experts". Charles Grimaldi opened today and I couldn't wait to get home from work to (1) harvest the pollen and (2) paint the stamen with Butterfly. I've put together a little kit with old film canisters, a pair of long scissors and a paint brush.

This could take over your life!! It is so addictive.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. I said that too Linda and look at me now. It is so much fun!! I must say mine do not take easily in winter though. Good for you!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Did it turn dark after it was pollinated?? Such a fresh, clean, beautiful bloom, I'll bet you will be blessed with lots of babies, good luck!!!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Butterfly and Maya were both blooming at the same time. I did Butterfly x Maya but that one fell off. So far the Maya x Butterfly is looking good. That's when I decided to start harvesting pollen for the time that only one plant is blooming. Kell, I'm not going to say that I'm not going to rent land to grow them (because as soon as I say it, I'll do it). I don't have a clue where I'll grow all the babies I have now.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Sherry, I think the color difference is because of the flash and it's under a shop light.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Yes, you're going to be like the rest of us with too many babies. LOL

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Congrats, Linda! They are looking great!!! I have said the same thing. Its all I can handle to keep up with everyone else's babies. Can't imagine breeding my own on top of that. Plus, I get a great deal of pleasure in growing for others. I'm not nearly as excited about my own. Go figure :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I grow others' seeds also Gretchen. It is fun to share like that. You are picked to be surrogate Mom because you are such a good brug Mommy and we all trust you to follow thru with our wishes.

I bet you go nuts like I did Linda. Welcome to the nut club.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thanks, Kell. I appreciate that :)

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

My first pod just recently matured (it was a seedling visited by an insect) I have some of the seeds started to see if I get any germination.

I bet they all do!! Great looking seeds. I love looking at the shape of the pods different brugs make.

I wonder if the donor pollen alters the shape at all. I notice mine grow in all sizes. Some are huge and some are much smaller on the same plant.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm glad there are others who are becoming addicted to pollinating. LOL! We even shell out our seeds on the same kind of paper plate. LOL! Looking good Linda. Congrats.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

How exciting! I love reading about all your Brug adventures and I'm learning so much. These really are the MOST incredible plants. Good luck, Linda!

P.S. Your flower is beautiful.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

plant_fiend are you saying you DO NOT have any brugs, wow. kell should talk to you, she did me and now I have LOTS but not near as many as I will have next year I bet.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks all, this is really so much fun and adds so much to my life. I sincerely appreciate all the help I've received here over the past 2 years (both advice and cuttings and seeds). I'm still surprised by the number of people who say 'brug WHAT'.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

This are my treasures. I am going to start seeds in a few days. I am waiting for appr. 10 more pods to get ready to pick.

So neat and tidy and I bet you have some wonderful new additions, good luck!!! I really hope I get just one pod this year and I'm working on it every day...

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh, I wonder what treasures are in those pouches. Wish I could grow a few of them here (like I have more room to grow anything else).

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Monika, you are so neat. My seeds are all marked, but are just tossed in a shoe box. LOL!

Adrian, MI(Zone 5b)

Monika, I bet everyone who sees this picture, is wondering what beautiful blooms are inside those seeds!! We can't wait until they bloom!!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Sometimes I like it neat lol!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

WOW Monica, are those ALL Brug seeds, I have a very long way to go lol

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I just went to the garage to see if I could find an air pump and what did I find instead? Another pod of seeds. So, I planted some and put the rest out on a plate to dry. I don't even have room for them. LOL!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

good heavens Brugie, what did you do, go out there and PUMP up your Brugs LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I totally missed that pod. There are some others out there that are still maturing, but they were not my crosses. This was one I did and just plain didn't see it.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Me too Monika -- I like everything to be very neat and tidy. Unfortunately, it doesn't always happen that way, but I try...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

How many seedlings will you grow out this year, Monika?

Brugie, good you found it!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Kell, it all depends on the germination rate. It will probably between 200 - 300.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Monika, out of these how many do you think, from using your past experience, will make it to the naming stage?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Maybe 8 or 9 Kell, may a few more but most of them will be composted after the first bloom.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

And, how long does it take you to get from planting the seed to seeing the bloom? Seedlings that I planted this time last year did not bloom before they had to go into gh.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Most of them need two, a few even three years. I have a very short growing season, not more than 3 months.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

WOW!!!! Monika, you are not only a talented gardner, you are a patient gardner. I guess the two go together...
