In my first attempt to harvest seeds, I clipped off the seed pods (or "deadheaded") the seeds from several Black-Eyed Susan Plants. Last night I opened up the heads and rubbed them between my fingers to allow the tiny little black seeds to come out. Now I have a plastic bowl full of seeds and the little bits of the flower pods and can't seem to separate them. I have tried a small strainer, but the seeds go through the sein as well as the other little bits. How do you separate these itty bitty seeds from the rest of the small debris?
separating the wheat from the chafe?
I take the dried cones off of the plants and tear the cone in half top to bottom and then use a tip of a sharp pencil and just pick the seeds out if I want to separate them from the chaff.
You could also put them on a paper plate or stiff paper and fold it in half and tap it. The seeds usually fall to the bottom of the pile and you can pick the chaff away a little at a time.
I prefer to just leave the chaff and make sure there is a good amount of seed in a packet if I intend to tade. Otherwise, I am not real picky if it is just for myself and put it all in a little medicine bottle until I am ready to plant it and then just shake it out.
Thanks, Windy, that is a big help. I think in the future I will try it that way and split the pods and poke the seeds out. When I rubbed the pods between my fingers and totally disentegrated them, I made a lot more work for myself. I guess the trick is not to make such a big mess next time? Or maybe, work with a plant that has bigger seeds? Not bad for a first time, though. I ended up with 8 little bags to trade and a stash of the 'dirty' stuff for myself to plant when spring finally gets here. All in all, it was a very encouraging experience and I am anxious to harvest all my new flowers next year.
