Did you know you can e-file for free online now? Last year, only people who met certain income and other requirements were able to file for free, but this year many of the online services have waived such requirements. You DO have to link to the tax preparation website(s) through the IRS website, but there is no charge. See http://www.irs.gov/efile/index.html
State returns can also be e-filed for free for many states, too. Check with your state's taxation website. http://www.taxsites.com/state.html
Filing online is like using TurboTax or TaxCut on your home computer, so if you're familiar with the interview style of such software, you'll do fine filing online. The tax sites will offer you upgrades and packages which provide more in-depth help and such, but you do not have to use them in order to file free. Just remember, you must follow the IRS website's links to the tax sites in order to get the free filing.
