Great Canadian Superstore

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I thought you two would! ;) 1 bulb for $19.95 or 3 for $54.95 sure makes one think twice tho. How would you overwinter it if you did get it echoes?

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

I must have a different catalogue because I can't find that one in mine.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

If this is the same lily, it is quite a bit cheaper right in Pam's backyard.

I'm very new to seeds, this year will be my first attempt at them. So I'm trying something that I fell madly in love with last year. The one I had was Diascia Orange Sunshine - and of course its not in the Plant Files, and I didn't know how to use my digital camera then...sigh. Since they come in so many colours, I want to get as many different ones as I can and fill containers for the deck over my garage. Thanks for the heads up on Thomson & Morgan and Vesey's - I've placed an order with Vesey's for the pink queen diascia, and some spider dahlias. I don't have more time tonight as my pillow's calling me. Night all, and thanks again!

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Well.. that;s what you get when you look it up on the internet, huh? Too bad, way cheaper for the prairie version. Go figure, eh? I'll have to look it up again to see a photo of the one you are talking about

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

This sure isn't the best pic but it will give you an idea....

Now that I remember, we aren't getting it cause its too fussy to grow here. Another lily person from ColdZones grew it and it slowly faded away after a few years. I love some of the species lilies, but I'm going to stick to the hardier ones.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

What is the name of the expensive hardy lily that you are after echoes?

No expensive ones Pam. That Nepalense was about the most expensive one I've been tempted on, and I'm not going to try it.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Well, I guess real Canadian Superstore and Great Canadian Superstore are one and the same. I wonder why they wouldn't have the same name all across Canada? I went today to check for a Sago palm and sure enough they had about 30 of them for $10.97.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I think I'll have to find something else to trade with you Sandy. Maybe we should wait until fall......that way I might have something different to send to you.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

I didn't buy one. But no, there's no reason you need to lug one all the way across the country, though I really do appreciate your offer. I'm going to wait a week or two and see if they have a sale on tropical plants. I can't see 30 of them going too fast. Although, I guess I'd better keep my eye on them, after all, there were only a couple of nanas left at Thrifty's Foods out of about 10.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

Pam, I went to look at your Palms at SS- very nice. Did your DD mention that some type of salamander or equally yucky green thing came in with the tropical shipment. The greeter lady at the door told me, I think her name is Ellie. She said they have not found it yet in the store. I think I will have the willies over this one for a while. Joelle

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Aw, I wonder if it was a gecko. The poor thing. I've heard of people finding them in shipments of bananas. I would love to find a gecko in a tropical plant....what a bonus.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOLOL if we had seen it Joelle it would have been adopted very quickly! ;) I take it you will never move to the warmer climes down south? I love green four legged things but their spiders and snakes will keep me here.

edited to say DS didn't hear that piece of news and neither did we.........but I shall ask him to keep an eye peeled for our poor friend running loose in Polar Bear Land.

Joelle, that's a hoot! The poor thing must be terrified, though. Hope they find it soon, and turn it over to the SPCA or another reputable place for animals.

Shannon

Ooo, that would really, really upset me to find a crawly critter in a grocery store - or anywhere really ... lol.

Christine.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I found a worm in a green pepper once - marched straight back to the Safeway where i had just bought it and showed customer service (like it was their fault...lol - actually I just wanted to show the evidence) - they were duly grossed out, as I was. Since then I've been growing my own, in the summer at least! :-)

Yuck. I've only ever found critters in veggies that I buy at a roadside stand, so I stick to grocery stores. A few summers ago I was at a friend's, who asked me to get a buch of romaine from her garden. I did, and as I was cleaning it in the sink, earwigs started running out. I screamed and ran. She laughed and cleaned it herself, making sure the bugglies went down the drain. I don't like bugs, not one little bit.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I don't either, Christine. But since we are on "YUCK", stories, I'll tell you mine. About ten years ago, in Edmonton, went to the IGA Garden Market store and bought some nice Ocean Perch. I had always enjoyed the lake perch out of the local lakes, and hadn't ever tried the ocean perch, but figured it must taste pretty much the same. Picked out a nice big one and brought it home. When I opened the package to clean it before cooking, I opened the fillet up and away from the side of the fish (very well camouflaged) crawls a long white worm...oh I'd say 5-6 inches long. Well, it was closed, wrapped and out of there in the garbage can before you could whistle dixie. No, I didn't return it to IGA, I didn't even want to touch it! Needless to say, I have never purchased Ocean Perch again. Since that experience, I have heard that it is common for fish, local or otherwise to contain worms. I quess what you don't know, or can't see won't hurt you...Yuck!!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

The hair on my arms stands up when I even think about bugs. Can hardly wait for my entomology class..... :-p

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

I wish I could remember what name she said, I say Salamander but that is my grade school memories coming back to haunt me! Nightowl I don't think she said Gecko but that is closer than salamander. Pam I think your adoption agency would like it, she motioned with her hands that it was about 10 inches long! GROSS! There is probably bit marks in the fruit.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

We grew broccholi one year, it looked lovely. We cut it off the stem, threw the head into the steamer, and when we opened it up to look at it, there were all these little white worms. Unknown to us, they are green, the same breen at the brocchli, until you boil them. That's the last time I grew brocholi. I understand you have to soak the brochli in salted water to remove them before cooking.

sometimes it's take me as long to correct my fat finger typos as it does to write the message. one of these days I'm going to leave it and see if you can make out what I'm trying to say

LOL Linda. I had those little wormies too, on broccoli I bought from a roadside stand ... ultra yucky ... goosebumps forming.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It's because she said it was green that I don't think it is a Salamander Joelle. Salamanders tend to be black, red, grey and/or brown but not green. They also like to live in cool damp dark places but Geckos and other lizards would love a greenhouse. She prolly mentioned it because that's usually what's found around here.

DS has an old television that he would love to gut and use as a terrarium.

I was one of those kids that loved to bring home our innoculous slithery/slimy creatures to keep as a pet. Needless to say my mother didn't appreciate my hobby.

I guess you can tell that I was one of those too. When I was a kid I had a wooden box that I kept snakes in. I only ever kept them for a little while,as even then I never liked to hurt anything. I'll never forget the time I tried to catch a lizard of some kind. I grabbed it by the tail but it's tail came away in my hand. I was so upset because I thought I'd killed it. LOL I still love frogs but wouldn't really care to pick up snakes any longer. I don't really like spiders but I don't like to kill them if I can help it. I keep a jar handy to catch them and let them go outside.

We would have got along famously Sandy! I had a similar holding area for my finds........if my mother didn't discover them first. Also would put them in the tub. You know some days she really, really didn't like me. :)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Oh, my goodness, all of you! Snakes, I can't!@#$%^& snakes! I can pick up spiders, worms, geckos and lizards.......but the first, paranoid of them. Oh but they feel nice and dry...that will be the frosty Friday, !@#$% can't bear to watch one on tv....my family has always been pretty good about warning me! I always remember watching, the movie, that Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, "Jewel and the Nile"......scenario......both of them taking cover in a plane wreck, and all of a sudden..!@#$%^ ,my girlfriend and I jumped over our husbands and the coffee table and took off screaming like banshees! And then there's "Raider of the.......................I love the way Harrison (Indiana) says.......snakes, why does it have to be snakes?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

ROFLOL!! My mother felt exactly the same way! :)

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I was a critter collector myself as a child. We had the ole Mill Creek running very close to were I grew up and it was a treasure trove of of all kinds of things. I collected frogs and tadpoles, and even found a clam once. My poor mom was always afraid to peek in the tubs, I'd keep downstairs, 'cause, she never knew what she'd find. We didn't have snakes aroungd Edmonton, which was a bonus, cause I could handle the occassional salamander, but never a snake. I had my first encounter with a garter snake in my backyard here this past summer. I kept putting a bucket over it trying to keep it until my DH got home, and the little begger would keep crawling out from under even with rocks on it. When he did get home we packed it up and released it in a rocky area in a field nearby. Now that I think of it, if I'd have just left it, it prolly would have just crawled away. My neighbors were likely peaking out their window, laughing at the crazy Albertan!

When I was a kid, I also had several hamsters and turtles besides the family pets. Always have loved animals of any kind, and like the rest of you, don't like killing anything, spiders, flys...except mosquitos, which I did with great relish! There again is the influence of my Alberta upbringing. LOL

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

LOLOL That's so funny Elaine. I like snakes and things but I know I wouldn't want to fall into a pit full of them. I seem to recall that Indiana also got into the middle of a mess of rats. I think I'd take snakes over rats any day.

I think everybody kills mosquitos no matter where they come from Donna. As far as the snake goes....I would think that any gardener would be pleased to have a snake around to eat up bugs and slugs. LOL

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

My aunt had a picture she loved to show at the Natural History meetings on occassion........I was *in* the snake pit watching as they came out of hibernation. Caught a lot of little ones too.

How are you doing Elaine?

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

ROTFL You're mean Pam.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I know .........but it is true!

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

It sounds cool. I would have loved it myself. Naturally I was always looking for baby snakes especially. How old were you when the picture was taken?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Somewhere between 6 and 8.........if I find it I'll post it.

Just for you Elaine! Ü

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Great, I'd love to see it. Hey, why don't we have a thread where we all post scanned pictures of when we were little kids. What do you think?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I'm sure some peeps would be more willing to post those pics!

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Yes, I have lots of pictures I like of me when I was little. I'm sure everybody else feels the same.
