just got a new shipment of tropicals in. I picked up a Sago Palm for $10.95 and a huge lipstick for $9.95 (I'm sure of the dollar amount but may be off on the change....can't find my sales slip). The Sago is a really nice size (about 18" tall). Saw ones of a similar size going for $45.00 to $65.00 at other stores last year. I personally find the Sago fascinating.......it's considered a living fossil that traces it's origins back to the ancient flora of the early Mesozoic era.

They had a number of other tropicals ie Bromeliads selling for $19.95 and they were very colourful, healthy and huge.
edited to add PlantFiles link.

Great Canadian Superstore
How did you get tropical plantsw home safe in these frosty temps? Doubt Superstore would package them up that well for you. OooHh I wish I wasn't snowbound.
They have huge clear bags that the purchaser can bag them up in and they are *free*!! We brought the car up to the door and it was still warm........amazing how fast you can move with precious green stuff in your hot little hands. ;)
Well that should keep you going for awhile. Bit of a lift while we wait for that next chinook. I am waiting for that January bonspiel thaw. Don't think it's coming this year.
Very nice, Pam. I hadn't seen that Palm before that I can recall. I agree with you. The way wnstar planted hers in that container is very effective. Godd Luck with it!
I'm beginning to wonder about it too. A chinook is supposed be coming our way tomorrow but we've been promised that so many times I'm not holding my breath.
Hope you can get out and find something echoes......cabin fever really stinks!
Thanks Donna! :) From what I've read in the PlantFiles link it sounds pretty tough ........ crossing fingers and toes still tho',. ;)
That's a really cool looking palm Pam. I don't think I've ever seen one for sale around here. It looks like it gets pretty big but it doesn't sound like it grows too fast. I'll have to look a bit more carefully at the plants at Superstore from now on. I have absolutely no more room though. I looked up that dwarf banana that I bought the other day and I discovered it's not really very dwarf. Even if they only get to be 8' tall they're still about 9' around. The flower looks like something from Little Shop of Horrors. LOL
It is.....I've wanted one for years but they've been way out of my price range. I've found lately that Safeways, Walmart and Superstore are bringing in more and more exotic plants and if you get there when the employees unpack them they tend to be very healthy and CHEAP!! :D DS works at Superstore so we have lots of opportunity to check out their selection
I've got a couple of bananas too.....none are dwarf so I know I'm in trouble too! ;)
Pam, thanks for including that link to wnstarr's picture - it's really neat, how she did that groundcover. I posted a comment on the photo entry to thank her for the great idea.
It's amazing what you can find at these large supermarkets, eh? Sometimes even their $1 or $2 pots are good finds....I have a couple of succulents from Safeway's in Edmonton that I've had for several years.
I too think they are the best deal around......not so much Safeway's but even they have brought in some amazing surprises and can have good sales.
Our Safeway here has some really lovely tropicals too. No deals, that I have seen so far though. :-(
I had no idea the Sago palm would get so big! I have a baby Sago, got it about 3 months ago at Sobeys for about $8. Its about 6" high including the pot and has adjusted nicely to its new home. It really is amazing what kind of plants you can get at a grocery store, and they're generally very healthy too.
Gee, only 6" tall including the pot. It sounds darling. I don't suppose both of you could post pictures of your Sagos could you? I'd love to see what yours look like.
Pam, I purchased one also, last week during the monsoons! This is a super super price....usually they cost as much as $25 and up! Cycads have always fascinated me...saw the real thing in Barbados, yrs ago, around 10-11' high! E
Now those are the Palms I recall too, Elaine.
They are pretty amazing aren't they Elaine. I first saw them in California when I was pretty young but it was at Drumheller, 20 years ago, that I learned about their history.
Oooh, it's really nice Pam. Are the leaves shiny? I think I want one of those. I'll have to make a little trip to Superstore.
They are very shiny......isn't it nice that there are a few stores that we all share in common. Ü
Christine he is a cutie! Ü
Did you know that Great Canadian Superstore is Loblaws with prices that are a little better? The one I go to opened originally as a Loblaws; when I questioned the sign change, an employee told me that a survey told them that Loblaws cusotmers were intimidated by its size, so changed its name to GCSS. It fixed the problem! As far as the people who work there, its still Loblaws.
Your sago sure is cute, Christine! :-)
We had the same thing happen to a Loblaws here in Ottawa - the outside now says Great Canadian Superstore. I had never heard of Loblaws before moving down east, but Superstore (now Great Canadian Superstore) had been around in Saskatoon for many years.
There are Loblaws stores in Quebec too, and also a slightly cheaper version closer to our house, called Maxi, that carries President's Choice stuff. Good thing, as I've grown quite fond of their Peppermint chocolate crackle ice cream...lol

I remember the name change as well. Here tho they shut down the original Loblaws store and built the huge box store with the new name....after awhile I forgot it was part of the Loblaws' chain. I should check DS paycheque and see which company issues it.

Your Sago is cute Christine. I could definitely find room for one like that.
I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up that there might be a Sago at our store though. It's called the real Canadian Superstore. I don't know if it would be exactly the same chain. They sell President's Choice stuff but so does the SuperValu grocery store which is where we got some of that great ice cream at Christmas. We just opened it the other night....mmmmm. We don't have a Loblaws but we're getting a Walmart and we just got a Rona. I was hoping that the Rona would sell plants but when I went there they said that they have different types of stores and this one was only going to be a building supply store.
I could pick one up as a trade for RoundUp.....it's not like I'm going to find a whole lot of other plants here! ;)
Sandy, you got ice cream at Christmas and are opening it now?? Wow! You have far more restraint than I ! :-) It does sound good.
Shannon
That's a very kind offer Pam. I was thinking afterwards that if Elaine got hers at Superstore in North Vancouver that maybe they are related stores. I'll check it out tomorrow and let you know, okay? Thanks.
I wanted to open it earlier but we had another kind that was already opened. So I was restrained rather than having restraint. LOL
Shannon, Alberta had Loblaws years and years ago before Superstore. I remember them well, but I am... ahem...a few years older than you.
Sure does depend on what "kind" of store you have in your locality, even with the same name. In Grand Forks, an hour away, they have a brand new Extra Foods store that carries all kinds of stuff, like a small department store along with a grocery store and their tropical plant department is extensive. But in Castlegar, our Extra Foods store is an older one and very "bare bones". Very frustrating.
Donna, I had no idea - thanks for setting me straight on that one :-) When I left Edmonton, the big ones were Great Cdn Superstore, Save-on-foods, Safeway & IGA in some locations. I always thought Loblaws was an Ontario thing.
Interesting to see Sobey's from the maritimes making its way across the country too.
I was at the GCSS this afternoon, and they had lots of lovely plants, but we were going somewhere else after so didn't want to chance it, with the nasty cold and wind that's out there. I did, however, hit my garden centre, and they had some nice Sagos, $11 for one a wee bit bigger than mine, and $20 for one smaller than Pam's. They have lots of seeds in, but no bulbs of any kind. And none of the seeds I was looking for - diascia - hard to come by apparently. They still have one seed company that hasn't sent them anything yet. Oh well, I can wait.
Gee, if you can find Sagos so easily I should be able to find one. I probably just haven't noticed them because nobody had brought them to my attention before.
Thompson & Morgan have a couple of colours of Diascia Christine.
Christine, I got Pink Queen Diascia from Veseys, 500/2.35
Wow, what a price difference. T & M's 'Rose Queen' are $3.25 for 100 seeds.
They have a few temptations. This is the first time I've ordered seeds from them, but have bought plants from them.
I've never ordered from them. I've only seen the bulb catalogue that I think they send to every household in Canada. They have some lovely bulbs.
Speaking of bulbs did anyone drool over the zone 6 :b Lily of Nepal that is pictured on page 3 of the Vesseys Bulbs catalogue?
Yes, I drooled, Ginny drooled. Put it on my list. Took it off my list. What a lily, what a price. Still looking for it at a better price. or a trade for a baby or something.
