Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens)

I want to propagate saw palmetto. Can this be done from the seed? I am told they are hard to transplant. Can you dig the pups and pot? Also, I understand that they are slow growers. Hopefully not as slow as the Sago's.

I might find a picture of some I've dug out of my yard. They seem to sprout up EVERY 2 feet, so they must come from seed. I think you can transplant them and as far as growth, I believe you can fiind one with a good fan or two on it, and it will take off. My yard is pure sand, so that may help.
They grow much faster than Sago's do.
I got a great "trench shovel" for Christmas, with a 4" wide x 10" long blade with a nice long fiberglass handle and good "step" for digging leverage. I just love this tool.
This has been very good for digging Saw Palmetos.
If they aren't wild there, let me know. I have access to at least a dozen. Me and my Trencher can get em for you.

They are tough to transplant once they get bigger. They really dont like being disturbed. I did try to transplant a decent size one for a friend, but it died. However, I sometimes find them showing up in my yard and when they are young, I dig em up and replant them elsewhere without difficulty. They must come from seed. Perhaps from a bird. I found some seeds at my sons house but they did not grow.

I have one in my yard that is at least 25 years old and I have never noticed any small ones. It does bloom and has seeds but I have never tried to start the seeds. I'm a hunter and spend a lot time in the swamp. Lately I've tried to make it a point to look for pups and I know it sounds silly but I don't seen any small ones. I know they don't pop out as fully grown plants. Maybe I should be looking in the late spring instead of the winter.
Thanks for your offer, Sugarweed, maybe we could come up with a trade. I have lots of gingers that will grow in your area.
Thanks also to rylaff for your info.

I can spot a pup a12 feet away. I'll see if I can photo one tomorrow so you'll know exactly what hey look like

Saw Palmetto makes a berry, which is used for prostate problems. I was on a medicinal plant walk in October, and we were looking for saw palmetto berries, all of us wondering when they fruit. Sure enough, we happened along on one with a bunch of berries on it -- still green. So they fruit in October, or late fall. You can also get the berries, whole, in health food stores. As an added bonus, saw palmetto is one of the favorite habitats of the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.

Which is why I refuse to plant saw palmetto in my yard!
