Mudslide in N. Vancouver - Riverside Drive area

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Apparently 70 homes have been evacuated. Here's a link to CBC's story on this. Please post any news here - we're particularly looking forward to hearing from Liz, Elaine, Sunrize & our other friends in the area. Hope you're all ok!

I just posted on the other thread. Liz is fine, the slide runs from Berkley to Riverside. Liz is quite a few blocks away from there, so is Dawn and Elaine.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good news - thanks. Here's the report from Reuters, which is a bit different. I bet there'll be some pretty sobering pictures soon.

I'm glad to read our BC DG'ers are all ok!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

We're about 5 minutes away from the slide. I was just watching it on TV, it travelled a very long way. Apparently the rescue people are concerned that more slides might bring more houses down. They said that after they arrived the earth moved another 2 ft. at the top. They're hoping that the heavy rains will stop but that's not going to happen until tomorrow.
If you Google 'mudslide North Vancouver' there are a few pictures.

Precipice Valley, BC(Zone 2a)

Thanks for the heads up Shannon--I can't get radio or TV just now (both by satellite) as my remote broke! Forgot about CBC on line. Certainly sounds like it's near the Deep Cove area--am trying to reach friends who live up high there; hope they're okay.

Rosemary

Shoot, my intenet satellite just went down--too heavy a cloud area does it sometimes--so I'm REALLY off line! Makes you wonder about the value of our military satellites, if mere clouds affect the reception. Let's hope their software is better.

But the phone still works. For now.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Rosemary, what street do your friends live on?

Precipice Valley, BC(Zone 2a)

Can't find the address just now--Alan and Elizabeth Bell. Can't get through to them.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Rosemary, you have DG mail.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Rosemary, the only Alan Bell I can see is on Lookout Point. Does that sound familiar? If so that's only a block away from me so they should be OK.

The Reuters article says it was on a cul de sac Tree Top Lane.

Precipice Valley, BC(Zone 2a)

Thanks Liz, and Shannon--yes, that is the right address. That's a relief. My address book is out in our truck and I proabably won't get it for another 3 weeks! My internet satellite connection is coming and going--tried to get a personal msg out but lost it, so will see if this goes.

Treetop Lane is where it ended up. They are still searching for the woman by hand.
This is a small world Rosemary, your friends are literally 2 minutes away.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

I'm sure glad to hear you're all alright. That was my first thought when I heard the news this morning.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

Glad to hear you are safe. Joelle

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Could our weather in this crazy country of ours get any freakier!!!

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I had to work today, and the mudslides were mentioned in the coffee room and all I heard was the North Shore of Vancouver. Then by the time I got home and unloaded, I had forgotten all about it until I read the two threads. Thank God that the mudslides caused from this excessive amount of rain that has fallen in the Vancouver area, have not affected Liz, Lana, Dawn and Elaine as well as Rosemary's friends. And we must all hope and pray that the lady that is missing is found and is alright.

Our rain stopped here today, and it is very very mild which is melting all the snow and causing a bit of a mess, but they are threatening us to with the resumption of the rain tomorrow. I'm ok with that...just not snow. I have to drive to work again tomorrow. God Bless Canada!

Thank you for worrying about us. We are not far away, but most of us are built on rock, thank heaven. This, the one morning I was not glued to the news with my tea, I did not find out about until about 9:15 PST. Our neighbours on Savary live on Riverside, but not that far along. My concern now is for members of the Deep Cove G. Club who live on a cliff above this area off the main road called Berkley. Someone's swimming Pool is hanging off the precipice and I hope it is not one of our members.
Sadly, the woman's body was found earlier this afternoon. Drastic temperature change here from -10 to +13 with heavy rains and some ground not thawing out quickly enough to absorb. What is annoying is that we are overflowing our water storage resources so they will still have the go ahead to declare a shortage in summer.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Oh my, I have been out of touch today. I have just found this thread and the news. I'm so glad that everyone has checked in, and so sorry for the loss of life. We had clouds most of the day, but it's been raining hard for the last 1/2 hour and it's very dark, earlier than usual. Everyone stay safe as they deal with their own peculiar weather.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

And if you were a plant....what would you be thinking?

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

"I'll never get these wrinkles out of my stem and leaves!"

or

"Someone help...I'm drowning!"

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Dawn, do you remember the garden tour in the summer we went on and the one gal with the old fashioned white house on that steep hill.......well, anyway, they mentioned on the tv about one home up on top, that slid down to Treetop...???????????? E. We're just ok down here, where we are, no flooding here...a portion of my greenhoouse floor is wet, but that's nothing compared to ???? I must have recognized around six different people standing out on the street below, which was shown on television...

Yes, Elaine: Lana and I were thinking this must be close to that garden. I hope not, as I was struck by the development of that garden and what was to come--really looking forward to observing it in creation. Oh, Dear poor peeps . Well, at least most all are OK and fed and sheltered.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Oh my gosh, I've got to go read up on this. Thank God you are all okay.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

The husband is in ICU, her Mom is dead. The teenaged daughter in California must feel a million miles away.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

glad to hear that you are all safe and sorrow for the family of the woman who was killed. i have a cousin with property on deep cove but not that street i think.

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

I am so relieved to hear you guys are fine.
Strange weather all over the world now...

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

This sure has been an ugly winter......I saw the pictures on T.V. and felt sick for that poor family. What a horrifying/sad situation for all concerned.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Does it remind you of California and the tragedy? E

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It was a horrible replay of it Elaine.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

A staff member's cousin lives at 954 Riverside Dr. Was that block evacuated?

edited to correct house number. (she tracked it down on Canada411)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I would say not. But I'll check this morning.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Liz! The mother of the staff member here is very concerned and hasn't gotten through to her cousin yet.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Lilypon: The map show the 900 block of Riverside to be quite far south of the slide, just off the main Mt. Seymour Parkway. I would say about 2-3 miles south of the slide area which has affected property behind ( that is 2 blocks to the east and away from the river) the 2300 to 2400 block Riverside. I'm sure her relatives are OK. Dawn

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Dawn!! I'm just about to head back to work and I'll let her know.......they will be relieved. :)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Yes, I just drove past where all the media trucks are and the address there is 600 block. Three blocks in would be quite far from the slide.
I'm, sure she's OK.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Liz......I just notified her of that. They'll be phoning her tonight but with much less urgency.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

That is where our good friend's daughter and fiance live on Treetop Lane, 600 block! also

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

It was 600 block Riverside where the media is Elaine. Parkway X Riverside.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I'm just checking up reading everything here. I'm so glad that everyone from DG is okay. It must be just scary to be so close to that.
Hugs, Donna
