Hi Scoot

I've been strolling amoungst them saying "Bloom or Doom"

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh Linda SC..Imeant to ask.. (maybeit was there and I missed it) Can I put my bucket with the cuttings in the basement too or do I have to give it light?

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

How long does it take to root brugs in water? I read somewhere on here where they had them in a bubbler for 4 months! That's a daggon long time to try and root something. I have patience but pushing it.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

pdoyle it doesn't take that long to root, they just leave them in the water and pot up in early spring

The method shown here is to allow you to keep many cuttings alive but semi-dormant for over-wintering.

Cool room ,glass containers , bright light but no direct sun , regular water changes and no feeding.

Takes a lot less space than keeping a hundred potted plants alive all winter.

When people ask if I talk to my plants, I tell them I sure do. I take a poor performer rip it out of the pot and march around to all the others with it in hand saying, "this could be you". Of course they all have the "but I've had mites" excuse.

I need to try that Judy. Too funny!

JazzP - If you decide to overwinter your mature Brugs in the basement, you can cut off the branches, leaving the main stem and maybe a few for shape (even maintaining the stem height). Spray with Neem. Dig them out of the pot or ground, leaving some earth around the roots. Place in lg white plastic garbage bags, moisten the roots, and wrap the bag securely with garbage bag twists around the stem.
They will need a little water every two or three weeks; hopefully your basement stays between 60 and 40 degrees.
Cuttings must have daylight.

Thanks Polly.. I overwintered the bug brugs last year in the basment and they did fine. I hava never tried to overwinter cuttings. I guess I can bring them upstairs and put them near a window.

Actually I was lucky to water my brugs once a month last winter.. oops

I have read this thread through and through, and I have a question, has anyone heard from the guy Steve? He was supposed to have a fail-proof method for rooting. Just curious. John

John, I've found you just have to try several methods to see which one is right for you and your environment. We're all different to I don't think there is a fail proof method: some of us (I'm one of these) over-waters everything, so planting in soil is out for me too much of a hassle trying to remember to lighten up on the watering, but bubblers are great because I keep that water going.

I hadn't seen Steve post before so he could be new here and not know how to get back to this particular thread.

Edited to say.. or maybe not.. he's been here since OCT of 03 so hopefully he knows something by now :)

This is the thread where Kell said she had ordered it and a fogger. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/640788/
I just reviewed the thread and did NOT see where she had reported on the use of the fogger with Forbid. Maybe she started another thread.

Sequee,

In the Spring put that poor baby in one of those plastic tubs that they sell at Wal-Mart with the rope handles (drill drain holes around the outer edge at the bottom of the pot) Throw a handful of everything but the kitchen sink in with the potting soil (alfafa, slow release fertilizer, 13-13-13, lime), then feed it Miracle Gro a minimum of once a week, poke some fertilizer sticks in the pot for good luck. Put it where it gets sun during the morning and is shaded from the harsh afternoon sun but still gets plenty of indirect afternoon sun and I bet she'll make you proud.

I just toss the Miracle Gro powder in the pot then turn on the sprinkler for a few minutes so it will disolve, don't water too much or it will wash the fertilizer out.

Can I add a stupid question? Is there any point in adding rooting hormone powder to the water in which you are rooting the cuttings?

Christie

I'm not an expert but I don't think so. The rooting powder I have (Schultz Rootone) reads that it is only for rooting cuttings in soil, whether soft or hard cuttings. Don't know what others would say. The instructions say to be careful not to knock any off while potting up.
I put a bit of hydrogen peroxide, a pinch of Miracle Grow and SuperThrive. They did fine but everyone has their own way=)

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

I saw that super thrive, wasn't sure if I should believe the claims, but now I just might chuck up the $10 and buy some!
Thanks, not in the water, got it!

SuperThrive seems like pretty good stuff to me and you barely have to use any so a little goes a long way. I would buy and eyedropper to use with it, that's what I do. When you open it, it smells just like really strong vitamins. I got mine at WalMart for about $8.

We don't have Wallyland near us... But, if it is so thrifty I can justify paying more.
Thanks!

This is from the back of the package:

1/4 tsp full per gallon for watering for most purposes.

For extra soft, tender plants or for constant daily use or healthy maintainance:
one or a few drops per gallon watering.

Bare root soaking (15 minutes): 1 1/2 tsp per 5 gal. for roses and tender plants.
2 T per 5 gal for other items.

Reviving woody shrubs and trees: 1 oz per 5 gal. Soak deeply. Once revived go back to regular healthy maintainance measurements.

I usually just put a few drops in a 2 1/2 gal. watering can once a week or so. I mixed up the pinch of MG, 2 drops of ST and a capful of hydrogen peroxide in a 1 gallon bucket and filled the 16 oz solo cups for the brug cuttings. Changed out the water when necessary depending on how it looked or evaporation. Tried to keep it fresh:)

Hope that helps:)

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh wow, it does help! Such little measurements!!
Thank you so much!

Do you know how long ST stays good in the container? It has been exposed to heat ...

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

That, I'm not sure about--sorry. Maybe email the manufacturer?

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Good idea! Why didn't I think ogf that??? ^_^

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm not sure it's always helpful to revive such old threads. It seems to cause confusion.

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Now I am confused... I didn't notice any confusion... ^_^

st catharines, Canada

Can you put different brug cuttings in the same container?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Perhaps I was the only one confused, but I thought this was a current thread. You can always post a link to an old thread . . .

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

I label each cutting, and I do put them in the same container.

If the information is good it doesn't matter when a thread was started, for me personally that is.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

True, mrs colla, personal preference I guess. People respond to posts that are years old.

For those on dial up the long threads just get difficult to load and read.

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Many times old threads are very interesting and have a lot of good info.

Actually, on Nov 7th I posted a link to this thread in a thread titled "Unrooted Cuttings Can I overwinter in water or newspaper?" I am assuming that after reading it mrs_colla simply posted her question on Monika's thread, which is fine since it relates to the topic.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

You can always unwatch an old topic as well and lessen any confusion:)

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Not sure how that applies to this... so I am confused again...^_^

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah, it's not as big of a deal as it's being made. It was my opinion, I stand by it. (Shrug)
