I received some bulbs in the fall, but never had the chance to plant them. I found Dave's Garden last month, and now I am a born-again gardener =). I still have a few more to plant the next couple of days. These are bulbs that have already started to grow.
Today I planted fifteen (15) Yellow Jonquils.
Late Start on Planting Bulbs
Moonglow,
We have had unseasonably warm weather here the last three weeks so I have been doing a lot of gardening. The cold is back now though.... :(
Anyway, I dug up and divided tons of cannas and daffs, so don't feel bad- LOL!!
I have NEVER done this at this time of year before.
BTW welcome to DG- you will love the kind, generous folks here!!
thank you, berrygirl!
i am so excited to see them grow. i can hardly wait.
Moonglow, just a heads-up: sometimes when you plant this late, the bulbs don't do anything until next year. Depending on weather you might get lucky and have them come up this year, but I don't want you to get discouraged if they don't. I planted freesias really late one year, and they refused to be fooled; didn't come up until the next year. Then they were beautiful!
hello, neighbor! thank you. at this point, i'll be happy that they're NOT rotting =). see you around, i hope!

Moon,
my sentiments exactly!!! We don't dig up cannas here and store them over winter. I was so afraid if I tried to store my cannas, they'd all rot by spring. It was such lovely weather I couldnt resist so I planted them. I don't care either, if mine don't bloom this year- as long as they don't rot- LOL!!

berrygirl, all of a sudden, i am plant-crazy. i'm OBVIOUSLY a novice gardener and willing to learn. my venture last year was planting GLADS, costco bought, inexpensive - - - so i thought if i ruin them, it's NO BIG DEAL. guess what, they all BLOOMED and i had so much cut flowers to give away and enjoy!
i hope you're having a beautiful day in braselton, ga =).
Moon,
I am a novice gardener too. We built a new house in 2000 and I only started going plant crazy then- LOL!!
Sounds like you had really good beginners luck- or you are just a natural green thumb!!
i'd credit the temperate weather we have here in marin and of course BEGINNER'S LUCK, what else!
well, that 4 year old house i bet is surrounded by beautiful gardens now =). as for our cottage, it's a very old one we bought in 2000 also, and now we are finally remodelling. i really do not have a garden yet...but a YARD, yes.
Moon,
Don't sell yourself short as far as your gardening goes!! Have any pics of your cottage?? An old cottage sounds lovely!!
My house is surrounded alright- but not by beauty- just a lot of hits and misses. But I do have 1 plant I am proud of- a climber rose. It has been gorgeous but I might have hurt its chances for next year. I severly pruned it in late December so it might be mad at me come Spring!!
So what kinds of plants are you interested in growing??
If you want/need seeds or cuttings the kind, generous folks here at DG will fix you right up. All you have to do is ask. I have never seen a group of folks share with strangers like they do here. These people at DG are really VERY special. Of course we don't remain strangers for long!
I know I took a picture of the cottage sometime ago...I'll find them and take new pictures of the remodel.
Please keep us posted with your climber rose.
Hmn, what plants? That's tough. Started becoming plant crazy in October when we came back from Hawaii. Now the more I think about it, I should try growing plants that do well here in my zone!
I noticed right away that DGrs are really warm, welcoming, and very generous among other things. What a wonderful meeting place we have!
(The picture of our cottage will turn up soon and I'll post them.)
More late bulbs planted today:
12 giant crocuses
15 blue sail irises
Hi, moonglow--I am so happy you are posting your bulb progress/procrastination on DG. Please don't forget to post some pics.
A 'corte madera cottage garden' sounds like a neat project...gardeners can grow so many wonderful plants in Marin--it must be heaven to have a garden there. We used to live in 'SF' (in the 70's--grew fushias only there--so much fog), and would drive up to Marin for garden tours and sunshine as much as possible. Reminds me of Sunset Magazine.
And the sunshine in the East Bay is so fabulous and plentiful...we lived in Walnut Creek for one year and had a lovely little 'suburban' cottage with lots of roses and camelias. Fun. Always drove out to Wente Vineyards then...(they were a tiny operation) and to the Rose Garden at Cal.
Later we moved to Pasadena where there are some Very Serious Gardens to admire/visit....
have been working on our Cincinnati yard for only a year or so and am just getting some results (both good and bad!). will be interested to see if the bulbs come up-- planted a zillion it seems...didn't finish til last week!
jkom and moonglow--Puhleez don't forget to post some progress pics! Thanks. t.
p.s. this is a 'Before' pic of our little shade-y garden--this fall we planted daffs, muscari, allium among a few hostas, ferns, coral bells and iris sibirica...hope we see some results come April!
tabasco:
What a pretty area. It's beautiful just the way it is.
When everything is up &/or blooming, it will be
gorgeous!!
tabasco, what are lovely area. i agree with ke6kad - - - once everything's up and blooming, it will be SPECTACULAR.
marin is beautiful indeed. we're on our 5th year here, and i'm just starting to learn plants. i don't know why it didn't hit me before. now all of a sudden it's like MADNESS.
there must be something super special that made you move to ohio =).
i won't be shy with the pictures. i'll post them as the bulbs sprout. i hope they won't be shy either.
have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Moonglow---did you put your bulbs in the ground? Anything coming up? Just wondering...I am nursing my late-planted bulbs along but not much showing yet...of course it's early here...there are some daffodils tips showing in my garden, but not as many as I thought I planted...I wonder if the rot got to them! Maybe they are just late bloomers...
Yes, Cincinnati was a surprise move for us, but we wanted a change and to shake things up a little and the move did just that! It's kind of fun to learn gardening all over again. It's what brought me to DG...in CA everything more or less grew itself.
Let's see some pictures...I am homesick! t.
Tabasco,
What a lovely shady garden are you have.
Love the stacked retaining wall, it's very natural looking
Dovey
t, i have planted the bulbs, and they are sprouting just about now. i'm really excited to see them come out.
hello, everyone! i hope your gardens are also coming alive. i'd like to update you with my late planted bulbs.
i've been enjoying the hyancinths for at least 3 weeks now. it's great that they all don't bloom at the same time.
for 2 weeks, i've been bringing inside fresh cut tulips (pink). the red tulips are next. the first one i cut this morning.
the jonquils, too, are marvelous. 2 in a vase right now, but i can't get a decent photo.
here's a picture of the tulips. huge blooms. one fully opened one is 8" across! i had no idea they grow this big.
Good grief. Those are huge. Lovely, too.
Moonglow--how wonderful--those tulips are fabulous! Really great results!
Did you plant those around January 17--the date of your first post here? If so, quick work, I'd say!
Thanks for posting your results. Gives me hope--as mine aren't even peaking thru the ground yet and I am getting concerned! t.
thanks for looking. i had to read the thread again. i remember the tulips were the last ones i planted. more likely end of january for them.
these bulbs have been so rewarding. i already know that i want to plant more of them this FALL (not winter, hee-hee.).
you all have been great. thanks for the cheers. i wish you all the best!
