morning glory vine

Tucson, AZ

Was very impressed by the beautiful blue vine seen on the web. Could I grow morning glory vines in Tucson and when would I plant them and where could I get the seeds?

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

I think they grow just about anywhere, I grew some last summer, I got my seeds from the 'Seed Saver Exchange' in Iowa, they were Heirlooms, I dont have any seed left though --- I've traded what I had havested from the vines late in October. Maybe someone on Daves G. will send you some seed. If you look them up in the 'Plant Files' you may find someone with a comment about them who lives in your area or zone.

You will not be able to find MG seeds anywhere in Arizona nor will you find a mail order house who will ship to us. It is illegal to grow Morning Glory here. They grow wild in the cotton fields thus clogging machinery thus being deemed invasive. So, to answer your original question, yes, Morning Glory thrive here.

That's very disheartening to find that out Kimaz. What vines, shrubs and plants do you grow here?

Joanie, two really good sites to visit regarding Az gardening is desert-tropicals.com and on garden web there is a forum for Arizona gardening. You can grow almost anything here but the requirements are different. For example if you pick up a Hibiscus from Lowes and it says full sun, well that doesn't apply here. Only native plants can take full sun here. Desert-tropicals attempts to alter the requirements for gardening in Arizona. Good luck. It is alot of trial and error before you find things that work.

Thanks for the info. I will check out those sites. Joanie.
