Fertilizer on seedlings?

St. Louis, MO(Zone 5b)

My tree seedlings (Japanese red maple and Amur maple) just got their first set of real leaves and some are working on their second.

I have some alaska startup fertilizer; http://homeharvest.com/plantstarterfertilizer.htm and I was thinking of putting it in a spray bottle and feeding them some.

Is this a good idea?

thanks for any advice,

Maureen

leave it for a while , they need to get there roots down and out , looking for food and water, they do need to do that here . compost or mulch is mild and kind,

I think I will leave it for a while.

Thanks alot,

Fertilizer will only promote top growth, and bootandall gave good advice. Wait to feed for awhile, then only half strength. For the first year or two, you need roots worse than the pretty part. It will make for a more established tree later.

Actually I put a very watered down version of some 0-10-10 fertilizer on those seedlings that had 2 sets of real leaves on tonight. It calls for 1 tablespoon per gallon, and I put 1/2 teaspoon in 1 gallon of water. I hoping that this will not give any boost to top growth, and just help the roots out.

We'll see! :)

Thanks,

Maureen
