Jagonjune--Those petunias you're starting, what is the projected sales date? Do you find the trailing and the doubles take longer?
Beauty of Winter
this is all new to me; i have never 'worked' in a commercial greenhouse before
many of the ones seeded now will be used in their hanging baskets and other potted arrangements that sell for bigger bucks cause the plants are way far along
i believe we will be seeding petunias at least three times
the extra seven trays (200 per tray) of purple waves are for a display that is on the border of the greenhouse roof. they have built a large planter all along the front of the roof that is irrigated and plant it with purple waves
next week i think i will be working on the zonal cuttings and the week after that a large shipment of tropical cutttings will arrive and need attention
i am hoping to learn a lot more about propagation in general
No fair! You Canadians have all the fun with your incredible pictures and warming "potions". Weeze even has a Moose (at times). LOL
Pati
I'll house swap with you Pati!!! Ü Hate to have you missing out on all the fun/beauty. ;)
Lynn, how neat that you get the opportunity to work in a Greenhouse. Which one is it? I love wave petunias. Have to have one every year. Just like the energizer bunny, they go on and on and on.
salisbury out in sherwood park
the odd thing is that i met bob - the dad - back in the early 70's when everyone was landscaping offices with large tropicals. ours did so well they were going through the acoustic ceiling tiles so we made a deal to swap them for smaller ones. in addition we received a credit because the big ones were so much more valuable. i used to go out and get flowers/potted plants whenever the need arose for company functions (wasn't a gardener in those days)
here these many years later i have gotten to know the youngest son because of his intense interest in tropicals that is how they came to be overwintering my brugs for me and hence me volunteering. the head nurseryman is from el salvador and is a genius at propagating anything - a real natural
Ah, yes! I have many fond memories of gorgeous flowers purchased there...of course, I also recall how much $ I dropped there also over the years. I lived in Sherwood Park for many years and around it on acreages for many more. I worked with Bob's ex wife and our kids went to school together. Small world...so many memories. Is it Robbie that you are speaking about with the Tropicals?
yes that's robbie
this is an amazing small world we live in just think of all the connections like this that there might be between all of us canucks on daves
we might devote some time at ru to exploring that theme

Good plan, Lynn.
Beautiful pictures Lynne. Sure looks cold though.
Lynn you truly captured the beauty of the prairies with those shots! Ü
whose the cowboy, pam?
i sympathize with the rancher; moving cattle on horseback in that kind of weather is painful. its them days that make you happy we now have japanese horses (quads and motorbikes)
yep truly weather not fit for man nor beast......DH said quite a bit of blood was mixed in with the saliva frozen on the poor cattle's faces.
Lynn, those snow pictures do indeed look like the ocean! But what an ungodly hour to be up, out and freezing. You're one tough lady! (Okay, now tell me your tractor is closed in and heated....?)
Getting the tractor started on these cold mornings is a challenge at best, but my DH is the one, not me!
Gret pictures! There is indeed beauty in winter, the colors are so awesome.
LOL......I take it you did the blind point and click and figured out what you took after you came inside and thawed/defrosted. What a lovely huge country garden! Ü
Ha! You got that right...that's exactly what I did!
Pat
Lovely garden, Pat. We'll look forward to seeing it again when it isn't "sleeping". But I can understand why there is nobody sitting in those lawn chairs there today. OUCH!
Good pictures Pat.
Excellent pictures everyone. I really enjoyed looking at them. Thanks.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
rosemary - the tractor has no cab but it does have a heat houser which makes it bearable and it is stored in a heated shop overnite
we start chores anywhere from 5:45 am (in the heat of the summer) to 7:00 am (in the dead of cold winter like now). I drive out from the city so I am generally on the road anywhere from 5:30 to 6:30 in the morning. it is a great early morning workout and generally gets me motivated to ride when we finish if i have enough time in the day. it is a small barn - just 18 stalls so we can finish by 8:30 or 9:00 am these days.
I'm glad you did. It's great. I see them close by where I walk the dog but not in the yard. He loves to follow their tracks.
I'm slowly adding of the winter ones to my journal.
