Baked Daylily Seeds - Opinions?

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

Well, I'm just a beginner in starting daylilys from seed. I think I accidentally baked them.
I have two rubber heat mats sold through gardening catalogs. (no temperature controls). I thought they'd be manufactured in such a way to heat to an appropriate temp for germinating seeds and/or keeping seedlings warm.

I put a thermometer in one of my trays this morning and it registered at almost 110 degrees. Are my prized daylily seeds goners?

Thanks

I certainly hope they aren't, but will confess, I have killed some before, this very same way.
I do not use heat mats anymore...for this reason...

You might be surprised. Some seeds can put up with a lot of heat. I would try again. To prevent the mats from over heating you need to make sure there is some ventilation around the underside of the containers. The regular seed flats usually work pretty well while flat bottoms may hold too much heat. If you are using a cover, that could be part of the problem, too. Jessamine

Well, just thought I'd post an update. I have had germination of some of the seeds even though the soil temps were extremely high. I am making more efforts to control the temperature of the soil, but at least we now know for sure that they can survive!

Good to hear Sandy.....these seedlings are bound to produce gorgeous blooms for you now, as they are survivors.

I would sow seeds of Daylily's after they flower and the fuit is very ripe, and the seeds brown. Don't harvest them until they are ready. Then wait a few weeks, and sow part of them, then do it again in another two weeks until you have it down pat when they will germinate for you. We all have different growing conditions, you might want to try them on top of the refrigerator, or water heater, or just put them on a windowsill that gets good sun. They flower in eary spring here, what month do they flower for you? Remember the soil must be sterilized. Good luck with them, Crasulaldy2
