Emma dog and phenobarbital for epilepsy

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

This is a continutation of the thread I began at http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/455346/ It was kind of long and was taking a while to load. Also, we need a better picture of the Emminator. LOL!

Emma has petite mal seizures, thankfully mild and only 3-4 minutes in duration. Up until this month, she had them less than once a month, but she ended up having two in eight days. The vet told us increased severity of seizures or frequency were red flags to watch for, so that was our sign. He has her on 97mg Phenobarbital twice daily. She's had 5 pills so far.

We're concerned. Her coordination is terrible now. I know the medication has to build up in her system and there is an adjustment period. Still, I wonder if this is a transient thing or if it's because she's getting too much. She doesn't seem overly drowsy or dopey, but she's literally falling off the big footstool sometimes. We need to call the vet tomorrow morning and see if her dosage should be reduced and by how much.
