Late winter/ Early Spring rooting of azalea cuttings

Is this possible.? The information I have talks about softwood cuttings done in summer. I would love to surprise my sister with one this spring. I am in zone 4/and she is 6. I do have south facing windows and the bush has definitely had a period of dormancy.

They take a long time to root, here's something I wrote a while back regarding propagation of Rhododendrons and Azaleas

4 to 5 inch (10-12 cm)semi ripe (semi hardwood) cuttings taken in September - October will root much better than any taken earlier. They will take anywhere between 2 - 10 months (or more) to root even when taken in late summer. Use a good hormone rooting powder and put them into the soil about 2 inches deep. Keep moist in a slightly shaded, sheltered area or cold frame/greenhouse.

As far as I know, layering is the easier option but again they can take a while to root.

Thanks, I think that rules out a spring present; but I think that I can arrange to do a layering rooting-maybe for her Birthday.
