TGIF! It's a "Snow Day" here in God's Country. We got a dump overnight. Temps are ok with a -8 and a high of -3 and mild conditions forcasted for the next 10 days. But will it be mild enough to melt this snowfall? I doubt it, and it sure makes it tough for walking. Have a good one eveyone.
G'Morning
How much did you get Donna?
Rats! eh Donna. We were supposed to get snow overnight but once again it didn't materialise. I guess we could still get some today so I better not count my chickens. It sounds like they got snow down island though. I didn't catch where but there were schools closed so it must have been substantial.
Sandy
Sandy, you sound pretty fortunate, from the sounds of Yumiko in Nanimo (why can't I spell that name!) and Linda in Victoria, they got a few cm each. Watching the national and local news last night was something else with all the accidents and such. DH and I (being old prairie people) couldn't believe the way some of those folks drive on the lower mainland. I don't know how they think that spinning the wheels is gonna help them. If they would just accelerate slowly and keep the wheel straight, it would make all the difference in the world. Taking your foot off the accelerator and not trying to brake suddenly would also be helpful. But you gotta live and learn, I guess and they don't have all the winter driving experience we have coming from Alberta and Saskatchewan. We heard that a lot of schools would be closed today too. Just as well until everything gets straightened out again. Winter in Canada; what a blast!
Don't forget us four on the North Shore......we definitely got some also!!!!!!!!! and as we speak, the Arctic Front winds are about us here...having watched the news yesterday, a three ring circle circus had by all.....trying to negotiate hills here was somethin' else???? It's still snowin' out........YIKES E, the one person who hears the word snow or black ice....quickly cocoons!!! About 7 years ago I spun out on BLACK ICE not far from our home, in order not to hit a car in the other lane....I put myself in harm's way and flipped over into the ditch....I had a headache for about a week.....the salt truck never came out that coooooooooollllllllldddddddddddd morning...
The international airport in Victoria is closed, and all helijet flights are cancelled. Over 10,000 people on the south part of the island are without power.
Most folks around here don't know how to drive in the snow, and those with SUV's and 4x4's, that have never done off road driving, have too much false confidence IMHO.
I'm staying home, keeping the walk clean, and making a big pot of soup. and wishing I was with my folks as they vacation in Puerta Vallarta highs of 29-31 C with sun.
Yup, it's the same old thing every year. People are out there driving around with their summer tires on. They wait until the last minute or it's too late before doing anything about it. Then the garages are backed up with people wanting their tires changed. The stores run out of shovels. The news is full of accident pictures and people sliding every which way, and they give out all the winter driving tips once again.
Oh my Elaine, that sounds really frightening. Thank goodness you only had a headache, it could have been deadly. It is still snowing here too. I have a doctor's app't later this afternoon, but I am not going to drive either. The roads are really slippery so DH is rushing home (over the mountain, God Bless 'im) and going to pick me up and drive me there. I am a big chicken, I know. But I get just terrified on these kind of roads. DH's company gets cargo on the company plane every day from YVR (Richmond) and this morning that plane never got off the the ground in Vancouver, so no cargo. First time it has happened this year. But, it does make his day a litttle easier and faster. A few banks without their bags though.
Linda, doesn't Puerto Vallarta sound wonderful on a day like today! I have been there twice. What a paradise! Ah well, dream we can!
No idea how much snow we have had, but it sure looks like a lot. I guess the roads are terrible. A neighbour tried to go into Victoria for a chiropractor appt, and it took him 45 minutes to go about 5 miles, and then they told him to turn around and go home.
Tonight will be stay in and watch a movie!!

Good idea, Glenda.
OMG! 30 cm in Nanaimo...and how much in Victoria? 16 cm? Man you guys got hit bad. Hang in there. Linda, stay under the covers, it's GOT to be gone soon.
Sending sympathy. No hand over mouth. I watched your 5 o'clock new.
Our place isn't so bad, maybe 3" or 7- 8 cm. not much at all, but very windy. I'm suprised we still have power, it flickers all the time. We haven't ventured out, except in the yard, and shoveled the walk. I've watched the occas. car slide on our street, we have some gentle hills, but they are treatcherous (sp) if slippery. I did make my big pot of soup, it should do us for a day or 2. we have everything we need. If the power goes out, we have 3 flashlights and lots of batteries for them. Lots of candles too. We hope to watch a movie tonight as well, but mighthave to resort to reading or (gasp) talking to one another, oh noooooo?!
The airport is still shut down, and they are booking for Sunday as they don't think anything will be getting in or out of Victoria tomorrow.
Glenda's out past the airport, near the ferries, and we heard that they did get hit bad, probably about 25 cm, with more to come.
Numerous accidents, the Malahat HWY was closed for a long time as was the HWy out to the airport/ferries. At least 3 transit busses were in accidents, I'm not going anywhere, I'm a gonna play it safe and stay home.

I haven't seen it yet but after reading the amounts that fell, my sympathies are also extended.
Well, we're certainly getting the snow now. Guess I'll be joining the ranks of the snow shovellers come morning.
Linda, yes I would agree we probably had about 25 cm or so, maybe more. We went to the neighbours for supper and a movie, and walked through the back 40 and it was tough slugging!!! It is very windy out here tonightt, but not much has fallen for snow for several hours. But sounds like more is on the way!! Power has been fine since mid-afternoon, but who knows what will happen with the wind and the snow piled up on the lines!
Keep warm!
Glenda
I listened to the Victoria Island CBC show yesterday. - (How I miss David Grierson) to hear how the snow was going. One Christmas when I visited there was snow up to your knees. We built an igloo in backyard. Spent most of my visit shovelling snow off elderlies flat roofs. No Butchart Gardens Christmas visit that year.
Inanda
Well, the power was out from 3 AM last night to 2 PM this afternoon, and now it is snowing to beat the band again!! Just doesn't seem to want to quit. Luckily, we have a generator, so hubby got it hooked up about ½ hour before the power came back on. Isn't that always the way!!!!
Looks like we're in for another good dump of snow today and tonight. Snow is deep enough that it almost goes over the top of the rubber boots!!!!
Keep warm everyone!
Glenda
Hang in there Glenda. It's got to get better from here! :-)
Hang in there Glenda, keep that fire going. We had a bit of snow again around 2-3, but turned to ice pellets. Now, nothing. The roads, at least the main ones are bare and wet.
Oh, that's too bad Glenda. It's such a drag when the power's off for such a long time. You're stuck in the house and it seems like there's nothing you can do...no computer.
You guys really got the snow this time. We were lucky from south of Courtenay north, according to the news last night. It started snowing here last night and snowed lightly all day but it's quit now and I think we only got about 3 inches. I don't like the sounds of last night's weather report though. They said we could get snow much of the coming week.
Sandy
Snow and sleet has stopped for now! Would you believe we were just at the neighbour's, at their fire pit, nice fire going, and drinking tea with Bailey's!!!! Fairly chilly right now, so heading to the shower!
A bit windy now, and there are some pretty good dumps of snow off the big cedar branches. Perhaps I shouldn't stand under them when taking a picture???? Camera is charging so will post some pics later.
Glenda
Lookin forward to your photos, Glenda. The fire with the Bailey's in tea sounds nice. Maybe that wind will blow in some milder temps. Fingers crossed!
Glad to see you survived Glenda! :) It sounds like you found the perfect antidote for your predicament.
Ya, sounds kinda nice Glenda.
And just had a sit in the hot tub too. It is very quiet out, but there is a good wind blowing. We have a lot of large cedars in and around our yard, and they are swaying pretty good. Our yard is lower than most of the neighbours, so we are a bit sheltered. We can always tell how windy it is by looking at the tops of the trees.
Glenda
Looking nice and insulated.......what temperatures are you looking at now Glenda?
Love your pictures.....almost looks like your back in Saskatchewan! ;) Your pond sure wouldn't look that good tho.
Hi Pam. It's just 0 degrees right now. We havent' been getting too much under that. But nothing has melted at all so far. sound slike it will be like this for a few days. How are your temperatures doing??
Glenda
Yesterday, it did almost feel like Saskatchewan, the way the wind was blowing the snow around. Almost like a mini-blizzard. We really dont' mind the snow at all, but then, we are used to dealing with it. We;ve seen plenty of blizzard action in good old Eston, Saskatchewan!!!
