Collecting wild plants in Fla

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

You're telling me!!!! When I was in Fla last week before last, developers were tearing down and building up so fast. I think you Floridians had better collect while they're still there to collect. I was told 900 people a day are moving & retiring to Fla. It scares me. It'll be a concrete jungle replacing the natural jungle down there in time. That saddens me.

Well- at least 10 acres will be wild! Cause we arent cementing anything.
It is very sad. :-( Draining the Glades and all those ugly condos.

Reports on what I brought back from the South last year. The lavender Iris I collected at my husband's Aunt's place, is doing great but I have been unable to get it to bloom. The Necklace Pod plant has bloomed & formed seeds several times this summer. The succulents I bought at Marie Selby Sale are doing great & have grown literally feet long and bloom & produce seeds, The cacti I collected in Ga (at a service station) are outside & growing new pads, The bulbs I bought from Florida Native Plants are doing great & the lily bloomed for me this year. I will have to include a photo of it when I get online at home, Lost the Heterandria Formosa(mosquito fish) cause husband left them in the truck & it got too cold. I was crying, so when I got home, I found a breeder & shipper who shipped me 25 of the little cuties and I am enjoying them in their little aquarium at home. I am really looking forward to going back. Maybe I will look Floridian up & go into the swamps with her. Let me know & I'll bring my waders & my "off".

If you get down to my neck of the woods let me know!

Sure, come on down...we're always looking for a reason to head down to the swamps. Funny thing is we were just talking about it this afternoon and we can go any weekend

Glad you had a good time and that your plants are doing so well

Cincinnati, OH

My wife grew up on the Ohio River. My in-laws' last boat (General Pike XIII) sank New Year's Day 1891*. We are going there for Labor Day. If you would like, and the river is down, I can collect some rare Perforated Mussels.

PS there was a button factory in Vevay, IN.

*They were not my in-laws at the time.

Handbright, I will be sure & look you up. I can't get over how well your little ground orchid is doing. It sures likes it in the greenhouse. Floridian, I'll be sure & let all you good people know when we come down. I'll have to bring plenty of "cutters" cause the skeeters sure love us Yankee's blood. LOLOLOLOL>

Coral Springs, FL(Zone 10b)

Just bring some "bounce"* dryer sheets...tuck one into your shoulder strap and you can be out in the "jungle", and yet still breath without inhaling 1000 little mosquitoes...
The dryer sheets block your co2 and the dang critters leave will leave you alone. I dont go out without one. :)

Seriously, though, look me up when you get here...
